(and don't slag me for using the oft-maligned term "grunge", you know what I mean!). And if Nirvana were in your list, who should sing for them, if at all?

    1) Pearl Jam
    2) Soundgarden
    3) ?
    4) ?

    1. PJ
    2. Soundgarden
    3. Garbage (I love Shirley's voice)
    4. Seven Mary Three

Oh, and I read somewhere that Dave doesn't listen to Nirvana's music anymore, too many painful memories or something :(

Seven Mary Three? Sorry, to each their own, but ICK!

    1. Nirvana (singing for KC would be TRENT REZNOR as you have to be able to SCREAM to sing Nirvana right)
    2. AIC
    3. PJ
    4. Soundgarden

    well, Eddie's not from seattle.

And Trent Reznor would suck as Kurt. Daniel Johns from Silverchair (and not because of the physical resemblance either) would be the only choice for me to front Nirvana. Or the guy from Seether, since he's so obsessed with Kurt and grunge in general.

Living in Seattle during the Mid-90's was an AMAZING time!!
And I know that technically they're not "GRUNGE" but to ME,
Sunny Day Real Estate could be on the list!!
They also got back together for a mini-tour last year that was AWESOME!!!
Jeremy Enigk's solo projects are great too...

I'd say 3 of them (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice) are locks.

The fourth band should be a matter of arithmetic:
PJ + SG = TEMPLE OF THE FREAKING DOG

Mudhoney cannot be off this list for a number of reasons - quality, originality, history, respect and the fact they do a fucking awesome show :)

In fact, I'll put in a resquest now: Next Aussie tour, please have Mudhoney open for Pearl Jam 8-)

If we are talking a live show the Big 4 would Foo fighters be acceptible for Nirvana's spot? Just saying cause It's Dave's band. Pat Smear was also a founding member of FF and toured with Nirvana as an additional guitarist.

Pat has rejoined Foo fighters or did as an additional musician for awhile- He may still be on tours if they still do acoustic bits but not sure.

In terms of Bands though popularizing Grunge it's Def

    Nirvana
    Pearl jam
    AIC
    Soundgarden.

That's just how it got globalized, but I agree that Mudhoney had some real influence, and technically should have gotten more publicity then they did in terms of a music revolution.

would anyone consider the Pumpkins this group? it's been widely debated that they were. I personally think they were not, even though they were huge in the same time frame.
while i think the pumpkins sound probably best embodies the spirit of the 90's i would say no

a few too many "artsy" nuances to be grunge IMO... doesn't really have that punk inspiration i think is vital to the sound

PJ, SG, AIC, and mudhoney would be mine

Having seen both, AIC still kill it! Both were amazing, but AIC are still as strong as ever, if not stronger. As strong as AIC were circa 92.

I agree, a "Big Four" should blow minds, but I don't know hwo the relationship is with STP and the other bands. I imagine it would be OK, as I think AIC just played with them. Mudhoney as the opener may make more sense. Or the Smashing Pumpkins deserve a spot on that bill! Maybe a big 6 instead!

So right now the big news in the metal world is the Big Four tour, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. Who would you pick as the big "Grunge" Four? To me the big 4 Seattle bands were always Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and AIC.

Obviously Nirvana can't tour, and I can't think of a seattle era band that was/is as big as those four.

Pumpkins or STP.. not really from seattle.. but they were in that era.

Mudhoney.. good.. but were never a BIG band like the 4 I listed.

Maybe it'd be better as a big 3 tour?

Didn't Layne Staley or was it Jerry Cantrell say something back in the middle of the '90's that their music wasn't 'grunge' and they didn't want to be part of that movement? Must of been a Guitar World read or Spin read, but their music wasn't grungy at all. :| These guy's image was glamor rock & their music was hard rock.

Nirvana pretty much put the word 'grunge' way up to the heavens and exploded it outside North America lands. Every country, city & town on this planet that had a Nirvana sighting, experienced 'grunge' to it's finest. "Mark Arm, the vocalist for the Seattle band Green River—and later Mudhoney—is generally credited as being the first to use the term grunge to describe this sort of music." "Grunge is generally characterized by a sludgy guitar sound that uses a high level of distortion, fuzz and feedback effects. Grunge fuses elements of hardcore punk and heavy metal, although some bands performed with more emphasis on one or the other!"

Pearl Jam are not and never were "grunge."
But for big bands of the early ninties then yes,

    Pearl Jam
    Soundgarden
    Alice In Chains
    Soundgarden

Smashing Pumpkins could very well replace Alice In Chains though. :D
