Agree with dimitrios... technically PJ aren't "grunge". But if we want to group them in as 90's alt-rock founders, include STP and SP definately! But if you want a Seattle Big 4...

    PJ
    SG
    AIC
    MH
    FF

Too complicated... I'm gunna read another thread (hahaha).
PJ - Sydney 1998; Sydney 2003; Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle 2006; Melbourne, Sydney 2009; Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney 2014.
EV - Canberra, Newcastle, Sydney 2011; Sydney 2014.

I think I lost track of the intent of this thread, but for the hell of it - my personal 'big 4' from the early 90s:

    Pearl Jam
    Alice in Chains
    Soundgarden
    Blind Melon

this is why I put the word grunge in italics in the thread title. You could argue that AIC was actually what I would call sludge metal, and Pearl Jam were blues rock, etc etc. This list goes on. It was just referring to the big bands that were all pretty much liked by the same fans at that period in time.

So right now the big news in the metal world is the Big Four tour, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. Who would you pick as the big "Grunge" Four? (and don't slag me for using the oft-maligned term "grunge", you know what I mean!). And if Nirvana were in your list, who should sing for them, if at all?

    1) Pearl Jam
    2) Soundgarden
    3) ?
    4) ?

    1. PJ
    2. Soundgarden
    3. Garbage (I love Shirley's voice)
    4. Seven Mary Three

Oh, and I read somewhere that Dave doesn't listen to Nirvana's music anymore, too many painful memories or something :(

Seven Mary Three? Sorry, to each their own, but ICK!

I love 7M3. They are my second favorite after PJ

Of course Layne Staley was a great and classic respected singer, but has anyone else seen new AIC live? DuVall brings it! He's amazing. Great live show.

I did see the new AIC. Was an absolutely fantastic show. DuVall is great. And the band was ON.

surely you would rather see them then a non-layne AIC?! i know i would

Having seen both, AIC still kill it! Both were amazing, but AIC are still as strong as ever, if not stronger. As strong as AIC were circa 92.

I agree, a "Big Four" should blow minds, but I don't know hwo the relationship is with STP and the other bands. I imagine it would be OK, as I think AIC just played with them. Mudhoney as the opener may make more sense. Or the Smashing Pumpkins deserve a spot on that bill! Maybe a big 6 instead!

why would STP have bad relations with the rest of the bands in this discussion?

Because they have become so trendy!

Currently it would have to be Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and Alice in Chains. Although I dont think i have any interest in seeing AIC without Layne, even though Ive heard good things.

Hmm, I've never considered Sonic Youth a grunge band, I'd love to see that line-up though!

    The big 4 were:
    Nirvana
    Pearl Jam
    AIC
    Soundgarden

No way you could keep Nirvana on that list if you wanted to see a Grunge Festival show. Even if the Foo Fighters were to take their place, you couldn't call it a Grunge show.

If you wanted to do an "Alternative 90's Rock" festival, then you could add in STP & the Pumpkins. But those guys were never (in my opinion) part of the "Grunge" scene. They just happened to be on the same radio stations at the same time.

social D is as PUNK as PUNK can get. they don't sound anything like grunge. never have and never will. it's an insult to even consider social D grunge considering were the one of the original southern cal punk/hardcore bands

the big grunge 4 that are still around

    1. pearl jam
    2. soundgarden
    3. alice in chains
    4. hole

you can't on hole all you want but they are more grunge then stp will ever be

you cannot have "Grunge" without Alice In Chains or IMO being from Seattle So sorry STP

    1. Nirvana (singing for KC would be TRENT REZNOR as you have to be able to SCREAM to sing Nirvana right)
    2. AIC
    3. PJ
    4. Soundgarden

    well, Eddie's not from seattle.

And Trent Reznor would suck as Kurt. Daniel Johns from Silverchair (and not because of the physical resemblance either) would be the only choice for me to front Nirvana. Or the guy from Seether, since he's so obsessed with Kurt and grunge in general.

I was talking about the band forming in Seattle, not the members being from there. I agree DJ could do it too, but there really isn't anyone who can replace him

Unfortunately no, but I don't think its because they don't get along. I think they just weren't all that popular. Mark Lanegan is supposedly working on a new album. Maybe he alone could be the 4th and play stuff from Screaming Trees, QOTSA and his solo stuff.

If everyone were still alive and everything, I would sub AIC and Blind Melon for STP and Soundgarden.

why the fuck would them crooked vultures be in the big grunge four? their first album just came out last november. that's like saying the big four of classic rock is ac/dc, led zeppelin, kiss, and lady gaga.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
