I am defintately one of those who feels that the band should remix then, it's time to stop denying the problem exists. Columbus, Bristow, Hartford & Newark are pretty bad.
i have all 5 boots of the shows i've been to over the years and bristow 2010 is the worse. all ed and matt...barely hear the guitar.
what happened that tour? usually the boots sound great.

Hmm, interesting thread that is just coming back to life now that the European shows are available. Listening to Dublin now (flac, headphones) and I must say I am pretty happy. Drums sound good, nice stereo mixing, Jeff is actually audible, unlike some of the NA shows, and Mike and Stone have good left/right separation.... Eddie sounds nice and clear but not in your face-- I am noticing that Mike appears to have had some technical difficulties with his guitar or amp at times in the first few songs. It kind of shorts out a little bit here and there. Of course not a problem with the recording itself, or the mix, simply an artifact of what happened at the show itself. Crowd is blended nicely as well. Not too much, but enough to hear during some of the singalong parts....

For those of u that think the North American shows sound "eye popping amazing" do u either have bootlegs from from 2000-2006 or have at least listened to them so u can A-B them next to these horribly mixed 2010 shows? I am a collector of PJ bootlegs going all the way back to the bands inception. I have had my fair share of awful sounding audience bootlegs, but when PJ decided to release their own soundboard versions of their shows starting in 2000, now I don't even bother with audience recordings at all anymore because PJ's people did such an amazing job mixing and releasing these bootlegs to the masses. My major problem is, how can the shows going back to 2008 sound so much worse than 2000-2006. I know the major difference is that Brett Eliason doesn't mix the shows anymore like he did from 2000-2006. But still, should they be NOTICEABLY different? I say no. It's the inconsistancy that I have a problem with. Someone in another thread said it perfectly, they said these 2010 bootlegs sound like a wall of sound all bunched together instead of individually channeled like they were done before and should be done. The Berlin and Gdynia that I listened to yesterday seem to have this formula down a little better, which really makes me more upset because why couldn't they achieve this before with some of the longer NA shows? Nothing against some of the Euro shows but a good number of them are festival shows which we all know PJ will play a shorter set. I mean, just listen to Newark being the worst of them all. It sounds as if u were sitting outside the venue listening to the show while the band was playing inside of a tin can. For those of u that have only listened to 2010 shows, I challenge u to go A-B 2010 against anything from 2000-2006, then tell me that 2010 is still amazing. Compared to the "brand" that PJ has put out already, 2008/2010 (and maybe 2009) is not that same brand. Later
I'm guessing the people saying they are "eye popping amazing" are the people who can't bring themselves to say a negative thing about the band. I have only heard one of the 2010 Boots (MSG 2) and although it wasn't unbearable, it sounded pretty shitty compared to what we are used to. They clearly mailed it in. What I don't get is, the turn around on these is slower than it was in years previously. If they are taking longer to mix, why do they sound so much worse? It's clearly a cost thing....they just choose not to put money into mixing them properly. I'm guessing they know they are going to sell either way so might as well cut corners. It's a pretty shitty thing to do but I guess it beats the days of $50 boots at local record stores although I do miss those days of finding a gem I didn't know was out there.
Here is my take. Its a recession, no one is really buying cd's any more so the band isnt rolling in the money like it once was. The band still has obligations to many charities which is more important than providing the fans with bootlegs, but they still do it any way.
If ya dont like the bootlegs that they are providing, tape some little mics all over your body and record your own.
No, the quality isnt the best, which it isnt supposed to be because it is a bootleg, but the band is the best and the memories from the shows are the best which is what im looking for in the bootlegs.

So the $1 per $90 ticket that goes to charity means the band aren't rolling in the dough anymore?
When a band releases something and charges for it, it should be of the best quality be it a t-shirt or live recording. A bootleg is an illegally made item....although these are called bootlegs they are nothing of the such. They are professionally mixed cd's, just like a studio cd.
If you want to be content with shitty sounding recordings for your $13, more power to you but don't tell people to tape our own or that the quality isn't meant to be good when in years past, the quality was great.
the solution to this problem would be to just make bootlegs directly from the soundboard and sell them at merch booths after the concert. AIC did this on their recent tour for 5 bucks. i didn't pick one up but i bet it can't be that bad.

I get your point here dimitrispearljam, I was thinking the same thing the other day. While I have been one of the most critical people on this board about the sound of the 2010 boots, I find it kinda of funny that none of us can agree on what ones sound good and what ones sound bad! I'm not saying why I think some sound way better than others, I wish I knew ( is it the venue or is it the mixing? ). How anybody thinks that MSG 2 sounds good, blows my mind, because I think it's one of the worst sounding bootlegs I've ever heard from the band ( which is a shame because it's an incredible show ). Anyways my point is, that of the few 2010 shows I've heard I think MSG 2, Boston, Newark and Bristow sound awful and Hartford, Cleveland, Dublin and Belfast sound pretty good. Maybe it's just the lack of consistency that bothers me so much about the 2010 bootlegs?

i think the venue have to do..its crazy..last year at europe shows at manchester the sound was really bad at the venue..so the bootleg, the sound isnt so good
next day in london the sound was wow!!!we was like..wtf???is like listen studio album!!!and this exactly happen to the bootleg..has the best sound i ever heard...
and lets go this year!!after tour we talk with friend, that london and dublin will not be good bootlegs cos in the show has some problem, especially london, cos was outdoors, huge festival and with wind!!and during the show the sound was lost!!!and here comes the bootleg!!!!belfast is good, but dublin great, and london.:woow!..
SOME PEOPLE THINK IS SOUND BETTER THAN BERLIN!!!./.
and more crazy the sound of outdoors shows so far,is beter than 2 indoors, dublin -belfast!!really,dont know what to think..im sure the people works the mixing, doing their best,i dont know why a show where the sound was great, the bootleg isnt so good..as for msg 2 ,i guess noone will say boot is bad, must keep it up,epik, better than philly, its nyc.lukin 2 .e.t.c

All u have to do is look at history. The 2000 shows were a mixture of indoor and outdoor, the 2003 were the same, as well as 2006 and most all the bootlegs had an pretty consistant amazing sound. "Consistant" being the important word in that sentence regardless whether it was indoor or outdoor. So imo the problem starts with the person mixing the shows, and has nothing or at least very little to do with the venue. From 2000 to 2006 PJ had the same person mixing the bootlegs, and the bottom line was they were consistant. From 2008 til now PJ obviously has someone different doing these bootlegs and they are all over the place. No consistantcy whatsoever. And it's consistantly bad! PJ set the bar with these recordings and now that bar is headed south. Someone really needs to do something about this. And maybe it appears that someone has done something as it sounds like the European shows sound better, and obviously better than the NA shows, which imo is too hard. This bums me out cuz the Euro shows were obviously shorter in length than the NA shows, plus the fact that the last 5 or so shows at the end of the NA tour were pretty epic, but yet sound the worst of all bootlegs. Later
I tried once already and no one seemed to answer me, so I'll try again, the shows that people are saying sound bad, are people buying the MP3 and they sound like crap or are they buying the FLAC and CD and they sound bad? :?: :?: :?: :?:
Oh and I am not buying the Europe shows because I am only buying the shows I went to, Columbus, Indy and Cleveland.
I am not a snob when it comes to sound quality on boots. I've been buying boots since 2000 and have never complained but i just got the MSG discs in the mail and i wasted $33. It would sound much better if I found an audience recording. My seats were on the floor right next to the sound booth and it sounds like it was recorded from there. I can hear people around me talking etc.
Oh well nothing will happen because of this but lets step it up next tour PJ if you are going to take our money.

These sound issues that people are talking about aren't a matter of MP3 vs Flac. It's the mixing. I'm like you, I just bought the shows I went to. I'll download the others for free sometime down the road.
I am glad to see people being on point with there concerns and views in this thread. Specifics help the folks in the band camp make things better.
I noticed various things before this thread was made and even some things people in this thread and others noted on. However, overall, I still think they sound great in spite of the nuances and issues. I have found the same things in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. I still love all those bootlegs. For me, the only show I find appalling ever is Newark 2010. It's hard to pin down exactly what it is though that makes me cringe when I listen to it. More tempo and how the energy of the show than the technical aspect versus anything but the mix is slightly off like some before and after.
The fact is as I have said various times in this thread, if we do express our concerns, likes, dislikes etc with detail and respectably then they will take notice and they did. I find more consistency in 2010 than most would and the Euro tour is a step up for sure.
I wan to to thank everyone who stepped up and did provide there side of things in this thread. It shows that you and all of us make a difference to one of the greatest bands ever.
downloaded Dublin the other day. In the first few songs, Mike's guitar sounds off. It cracks a lot...like he's got a bad guitar cable. It seems to be fixed after a few songs and the rest of the show sounds great.
I will say...in the prior years, I have only downloaded the mp3's. I have been a huge fan of the 2000/2006/2009 boots. For the 2010 shows, I started to DL in mp3 and did not like the quality AT ALL...
After reading how FLAC does indeed sound better by a few posts on this very web site...I decided to give it a try. That certainly made a big difference. The FLAC's of the 2010 shows shound great.

The first round of Pixies "reuinion" boots on "Disc Live" were a total disaster. They were mixed live at the show and sold on CDR afterwards. The mixes were awful...the EQ extremely trebly...and there were "clicks" between songs because of sector boundary gaps. The company shipping the discs failed to ship a lot of discs and a lot of people got ripped off...it took me months to get a refund for the shows I never received. Thankfully, the Pixies rebounded quickly and signed up with CD Baby for the next batch...and those were vastly superior in every way. I guess the lesson is...do it right the first time!
downloaded Dublin the other day. In the first few songs, Mike's guitar sounds off. It cracks a lot...like he's got a bad guitar cable. It seems to be fixed after a few songs and the rest of the show sounds great.
I was at Dublin but didn't notice it at the time. Downloaded the show the other day, and listening on headphones it is quite clear that Mike had a bad cable, or a short or something happening with his guitar or amp. After the first few songs it doesn't happen anymore.... Was an awesome show though, and really enjoyed hearing the debut performance of Of The Earth.

Yes! And that is exactly what a great boot should do and Boston is a fantastic boot! I think I have listened to this show a good 15 times.

Buffalo is okay, but kind of sounds distant and thin - like it was recorded by one of the beer stands.....
Cleveland and Hartford were better.

These sound issues that people are talking about aren't a matter of MP3 vs Flac. It's the mixing. I'm like you, I just bought the shows I went to. I'll download the others for free sometime down the road.
Pearl Jam bootlegs:

Sammi: Wanna just break up?
I was at Dublin but didn't notice it at the time. Downloaded the show the other day, and listening on headphones it is quite clear that Mike had a bad cable, or a short or something happening with his guitar or amp. After the first few songs it doesn't happen anymore.... Was an awesome show though, and really enjoyed hearing the debut performance of Of The Earth.
