beings the japanese still fish for whales and dolphins
i vote we send the gulf's dead whales and dolphins to japan.
they say they kill 1,000 whales a year for scientific research.
i see no greater service these creatures could do for japan than to have their rotten oily asses shipped there.
wait, wait...
ship all rotten dolphins and whales to bp and halliburton.
dick ballbag cheney could have his front lawn turned into a dolphin marine bird landfill of toxic shit.
So where are all the "Save the Ocean" concerts? Where are the T.V. Benefits with celebrities and musicians giving heart felt speeches on the poor fisherman, wildlife, beaches, loss of income and sabotaged gulf economy? These people (including our own government) are so quick to help Haiti and Chile and ...other countries...but where are they now?

This isn't the first time I've read a statement like this (though maybe the others were from you too) and I dont' understand it. Benefits are to raise money. BP already has money - and they are responsible for dishing it out to those who are affected. So celebrity benefit concerts and the like are not necessary.

Yeah. I do not think that anyone should necessarily be responsible for raising money for the disaster..because it is BP's fault and they have the money. But, raising awareness should be a top priority. People are really blind to this. This is big and people need to know about it...the truth about it.
If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

This is tragic, don't get me wrong here. But to say stop drilling is silly. The planet would stop if it wasn't for oil. WE ALL NEED IT!
Maybe something positive can come out of this complete disaster and they'll come up with better solutions on drilling to prevent this from happening again.

i wish...
you know, the exact same thing happened 30 years ago. nothing was done in the last 30 years to improve/impliment measures in the event of a disaster happening again like what we are witnessing now. it's criminal. the only thing we have learnt, is how to drill deeper.

"The company (BP) may be spending up to $10,000 a day to pay for “oil” search terms that redirect Google, Yahoo and Bing Web search users to the company’s official website, according to ABC News. "
it is really incredible how stupid they are being. common sense would tell most people that in such a huge disaster you should just be completely honest and pray for mercy, yet these guy;s still think the every day corporate speak garbage is the right way to survive this. i dont think they realize justs how fucked they are.
"German animal biologist Silvia Gaus has some tough advice for the people heroically trying to rescue and clean the pelicans and other birds tarred by the BP oil spill: "Kill, don't clean." As heartbreaking as it might be to euthanize them, Gaus argues, "serious studies" show that the medium-term survival of oil-soaked birds is about 1 percent — and the rest die a painful death."
"..according to this witness account, Harrell was screaming, "Are you fucking happy? Are you fucking happy? The rig's on fire! I told you this was gonna happen."
so, to be sure I understand.

They already have sold it...the side relief wells that is.....they have started plans for them, but as of yesterday, no real idea what they are doing or how they'll do it...no blueprints, no engineering details....this will take a lot longer than August.
Moreover, and even worse, as far as I can see, they'll probably make a bigger mess...just more stuff to screw up on. As far as capping this thing tho...whatever idiots decided to allow deep sea drilling...at this depth..should be taken out and dipped in his own oil and then left there to suffer as our marine and wildlife are being left to do..and when will their suffering end? Certainly not after they are cleaned up by volunteers and then left to inadvertently end up in another slick while trying to live out their lives. I'm sorry , I don't usually (in fact nearly never) feel so negatively toward people..but this whole thing reeks of stupidity and a whole lot of "I don't care what happens as long as I make a fortune" thinking. I mean who...in their right mind that is...who does something as dangerous as this deep sea drilling with absolutely no back up if something goes wrong...? Even my dog wouldn't bury a bone in the back yard so deep that he couldn't dig it up again...GEEZUUZZ!
EDIT: oops..got upset and lost my train of thought...re: CAPPING...I'm sorry to say but I've had a very bad feeling about this capping operation from the very beginning...and I just feel that things are going to get a lot worse before they get better at all. After all, think about the amount of pressure they're dealing with...and the fact that we've never worked at this depth before..that human beings cannot even survive at this depth to get down there and see with our own two eyes exactly what is going on...that nothing like this has ever been dealt with...ever. so...capping this at the source, in my (uneducated) opinion, is only going to make for a larger disaster when the oil and gas under this pressure seeks another outlet...once they've breached the pocket that nature had contained it in originally, it's got to find a way out...one way or another. D.I.S.A.S.T.E.R. is not a strong enough word.
I am not a pessimist...I always try to look at the bright side of things..the silver lining..but in this case...I'm very very sorry to say I'm unable to find one. :(
I sure hope I'm wrong.
peace,
jo

"Some people hear their own inner voices with great clearness and they live by what they hear. Such people become crazy, or they become legends." ~ One Stab ~
The sad thing is that people think that by boycotting BP...something will change. And by boycotting BP they mean that they plan on driving on to the "next" gas station to fill up their vehicle.
Now Don't Get Me Wrong and start hurling things my way...I most definitely AM and WILL CONTINUE to avoid purchasing any gasoline at any BP Station...or for that matter, drive any more than is absolutely necessary...and not just because of BP but because of my beliefs and feelings in general when it comes to our use of oil and petro products....you know WAR and TERRORISM and all of that.
That being said...sadly, many of us don't realize the scope of products that we would have to do without if we actually DID a REAL boycott of BP.
First off, the fuel...simply buying your fuel at another station is no guarantee that you are not purchasing a BP product....on many occasions, if a regional supplier delivers to BP and say, Sunoco or Exxon...and Sunoco places an order, but the distributor is out of Sunoco product...they'll deliver BP product to Sunoco, or Exxon, or Mobil, or the Generic Mom & Pop station on the corner. No one is the wiser. That's how it works...its not a conspiracy theory...its business.
Secondly..BP is involved in marketing a myriad of everyday products that are manufactured from BP oil or byproducts of that oil or of production or processing. Just to name a few of the products we use on a daily basis..that could have (and how would you know which?) been sourced from a BP product...maybe we don't think about these things being a byproduct of oil, but think about these things..each made out of or as a byproduct of petroleum.
OK let's start a typical day. Consider YOUR typical day...here's mine:
Wake up with the alarm clock...probably made with at least some plastic parts (petro byproduct)
Slip out of bed and into my favorite cozy comfy slippers (petro byproduct in the slipper soles?)
Head into the bathroom...(is the toilet porcelain or a resin/plastic petro byproduct?. What about the floor...tile? Real tile...you know...ceramic or terra cotta? Or that easier to keep clean, crack resistant, non fading resin tile? Wonder what that stuff is made of? Oh petro by products, that's right.
Brush my teeth....think about the tube or bottle the toothpaste comes in...and what about the toothbrush?
Hop in the shower ...again...porcelain OR resin/plastic..other petro byproduct?
Shampoo/body wash/soap....the containers are a pliable softish plastic, rubberish type of material...well, that's most likely a petro byproduct.
Ahhh....new towels...may or may not contain synthetic fibers some of which are created from petro byproduct
ahhh...shower done, now I feel better.
Time for breakfast.
Open the fridge...oh no...a plastic milk container? Or paper with a waterproof coating? Hmmmm?
Margarine/butter....oh a waxed paper wrapping if in quarters or a plastic tub if soft? uh oh
Bread...in a plastic or waxy wrapper...oops!
Toaster? Threw out that old metal one for a new lighter cheaper cooler resin? plastic? god knows what...another petro byproduct...oh no
How shall we have our eggs? In a Teflon coated (oops!) pan or nuke them in the (plastic/rubber/resin) microwave?
How about some OJ? I sure hope its a glass bottle...even so, check out the cap.
At least my glass and dish are glass...
Alright...clean up now....oops....our dish detergent is in a plastic bottle....and plastic comes from what?? oops...again.
Oh no, even the detergent itself contains petro products.
Drain the tub of the sink...pull out the metal and plastic/rubber/resin drain stopper. ughhhh
And my dish washing sponge? I know its not a "real" sponge, but I never really thought about what it might really be.
Time to get dressed....think I'll choose a nice permanent press or no iron outfit that will look good all throughout the day...made of....oops...synthetic fibers? Uh oh...petro again
Buttons? resin?
Zippers? Probably Not metal any more
Shoes....oh no! I NEVER wear leather for obvious reasons so I've quite consciously purchased shoes with man-made materials....ummmm.....geeeezzuzzzzz
Well...out to the car....love that I don't even have to put the key in to unlock the doors since we have our little chip key and the chirper thingy doodad to unlock the doors remotely.....made from....plastic..with a nice comfy soft coating of?? of what??? god only knows..but you can be sure it's a petro product.
My car...oh I just love my car...its so pretty and shiny..and comfy as all get out...and just waxed it over the weekend...sooo pretty! ohhh....oops...the wax?
Nice comfy car seat covers that are soooo stylish ..the kids got them for me for Christmas...so nice of them. Not cotton, not wool, not sheepskin, not fur and definitely not leather....noooo...none of that....a safe non-animal man-made material....uh oh..not again with the petro-by products!
Start up the car....no idea what's inside....metal..yes definitely..plastic, resin, rubber, foam, insulation, grease, antifreeze, motor oil, transmission fluid, windshield washer, brake fluid, lubricants, fluids of all sorts, you name it, its in there...wonder how much is petro-related? Even your gorgeous stylish flowing eye-pleasing car body...is most likely not metal but high impact plastic, maybe even reinforced with some woven fibers or maybe some fiberglass...o brother, but you didn't realize. And I just had to get 2 new tires...oh...man!
OK lets go....despite realizing all this...we have to go now or be late....there is time to stop for a cup of hot chai for the ride....in a heat resistant styro/resin/plastic/wax coated cup....brewed in a plastic/resin/rubber pot with a nice resin heat resistant handle so you don't burn yourself....and don't forget the roll back lid and the heat resistant sleeve and a few of those little plastic stirring straws to use for sipping so I can drink at least a little of it while it's still so hot and so I can drive. Yummy! Nice hot chai...wakes me right up for the morning ride.....of course I pay with plastic...oh ...man.....and secure it in the console's insulated cup holder...well, its too late now.
Get to work....thank goodness it's office work,,,so much nicer and easier than all that factory type crap, right? Sure is! You bet.
Wooden desk that's good at least. but coated with some sort of clear protectant..its kinda thick too...sorta like plexiglass but much shinier...what it is I have no idea. Some of the girls work iside a maze of cubicles made of ....? cubicle panels..who knows...some sort fiber board...or insulated sound muffling panels...can't be any sort of natural materials....or is it...natural PETROLEUM?
Pens, erasers, plastic coated paper clips, wheels on chairs, padding and upholstery, arm rests, heck, the chair itself...oh no...the computer, the in/out box, the cup you keep pens and pencils in, the desk calendar, push pins, telephone, stapler. tape dispenser, floor protector under my comfy adjustable rolling office chair...hell, the floor itself, the walls? maybe. the insulated soundproofed ceiling tiles...most definitely...curtains...well I do know they are wrinkle resistant and have something in them to make them drape nicely? My file cabinet is metal at least...but the file folders and tabs themselves...some sort of coated heavy paper...oh geez! Beautiful natural grounds...lots of trees, a little pond with ducks..I can see it all through the shatter proof glass in the office windows? Just about everything on, in or around my desk is derived, in at least part, from a petro product. I hadn't noticed any of this before...I'd been completely oblivious!
Lunch! On a tray? In a waxy paper bag? In plastic wrap? Should we go across the street to the cafe or use our lunchroom...the one with the laminate tables? Since our "lunch room" doubles as a meeting room, at least we have nice comfy foam cushioned, upholstered lunchroom chairs, with wheels. Nuke it? Paper plates? Styrofoam cups? Or waxy paper "hot" cups. Napkins are probably "real" paper but who knows. Plastic utensils. Clean up with the faux sponge. Oh man, boycott BP? How is that even conceivable?
Work over...ahhhhh..time to go home...the car again, but we've already been over that. Tell you what though, I SURE won't stop at BP for any gas..no sireebob! I will not.
Ahhhhhhh..finally, back home...relax...take off my shoes..finally..i despise shoes...the carpet is so much comfier and more plush than that indoor/outdoor office floor crap....because it's made of that great new crush resistant, stain resistant, high pile fiber...that's made out of ...??? ummm...out of./?????? hmmmm...yup....you got it, oh christ.
Well, at least I can relax in my favorite chair before dinner. I know it's not leather...Absolutely REFUSE to buy leather or any animal products where an animal has been hurt or killed in order to obtain that product. So...I very carefully chose sofas and an easy chairs covered with a microfiber...looks kind of like a soft kind of woven corduroy weave, but easy to clean, stain resistant...so so soft, nice thick, foam cushions, plush, wrapped with batting and covered in that oh so soft fabric..comfy...ahhhhh..so nice to come home to. Not that hard, sterile, office stuff. My stuff is....soooo....sooooo....oh no...sooo made from petro byproducts!
Well...whattayagonna do? I sure didn't realize this when I bought it, right? Thing is I never even thought about it..never entered my mind..wasn't even a consideration. I was dead against leather, but never considered the impact of other things.
I think I'll have a soda. Nice pretty can made from Rolled Aluminum...and guess who owns the largest of those companies? Yup...right again! Oh well....Still gonna have my soda. With ice. From the fridge/freezer....with the nice tight rubber/resin leakproof seal to keep it energy efficient...from my nice plastic/resin ice tray, and in my insulated plastic/resin cup that'll keep my drink nice and cold while I sip in and read my magazine before dinner. Relax for a minute with a magazine....nice shiny, tear-resistant pages...the coating keeps them nice, no ink on my fingers, easy to fold, so much better than that messy newspaper....since they have that nice slick coating on every page, and even better on the cover. That nice ....well...its almost like waxy, but not sticky...somewhat like plastic....what do you think it is? Who knows? Petro byproduct once again...geezuuzzz..is it that inescapable?
Dinner...what shall we have for dinner.. Well, its just me and my daughter tonight so something easy. Fast, not too involved. It's just the two of us. Something maybe frozen and easy to make. How about some chicken and asparagus....that's easy enough. Boneless of course...flash frozen (I don't even know exactly what that means) to keep them separate and packaged immediately in plastic to keep them that way. Resealable package with a nice plastic zipper. I have to get the top off first, I'll just use my kitchen knife..with the nice black and red resin handle. I'll need a Teflon pan for this....since I don't want to use any fat...keeping it lean. I'll just spray a little PAM on it, even though its Teflon, just to be safe. PAM....in an aerosol aluminum can, with a nice shiny label, some sort of propellant to help empty the entire can and not waste any little bit that might be left in the bottom when its nearly empty. Frozen asparagus...mmmm..might be tasty sauteed in a bit of garlic...sounds yummy. Where's that garlic press? Oh, its in the utensils drawer, and i can find it so much more easily now since I've gotten that nice drawer separator thingamajiggy....you know plastic, with separate areas in different sizes to organize your mess. Ya...I love it. So I locate my plastic/resin/rubber garlic press.....get out my resin cutting board, and a sharp resin-handled knife.....now I'm ready for business. Saute that all up in my Teflon coated pan with a little PAM sprayed in just to be sure nothing sticks. A little butter just for taste, real butter is the best, even though that pesky waxed paper wrapping gets stick to the sides of the stick all the time...but that's ok. I don't forget to put the butter away immediately in my cheese/butter cubby in the fridge door. Wanna keep it fresh, after all.
Dinner's ready..that didn't take long. I think we can use disposable plates tonight, after all its just the two of us...and I'm tired. Pink ones...ya, the pink ones are nice. And not so floppy and they are not really Styrofoam, not really...like they don't melt when used for hot food like we're having tonight. Wonder what they're made of? I sure don't know. Hmmmm...I wonder?
Dinner was delicious. Not much cleanup...most of it can just be tossed into the force flex trash bags that I put inside my pedal operated plastic kitchen trash can. Oh...yeah, I do get it..but...well? It just seems to be all around....what can I do? I didn't INTEND to have all these petro products in my house..but I do.
Time to relax. Back into the living room....I think we'll watch a movie we've been waiting to see..is it on demand or did we already record it on the DVR? Let's check the DVR first. Where's that remote..I can never find the remote. Oh..here it is, on the side table, somehow it got buried under the (coated) wicker basket I keep there so stuff doesn't' get all over the place. Got it. Bringing a cold drink with me, I set it down on a protective coaster ...some sort of pretty design on ..on..um...maybe resin? At least the cup is made of glass.
Switch on the TV and DVR and Cable box with my remote. There are sooo many wires involved in this set up, especially with the new speakers and sub-woofer setup..I just love it..sounds so nice. Wires everywhere tho..but I controlled them over the weekend by collecting them up and using plastic ties to hold them together and tuck them behind the TV. Come to think of it, the whole setup is made out of some sort of manufactured material..I'm pretty sure that the TV screen is glass....but everything else seems to be plastic, rubber, resin, some sort of metallic looking plastic or black plastic. I suppose I'll have to admit that nearly my whole living room is petro-related. OK got the movie on DVR...turn off the overhead light/fan.....and turn on the beautiful new hand painted lamp with the faux canvas lampshade and the faux wooden base. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, I know.
I'm tired ...got another long day tomorrow, I think I'll brush my teeth, put on my fire resistant jammies and head to bed...on my soo soo comfy new mattress...some sort of Swedish sleep system...kind of like foam..but not really foam..you know the stuff right? But that material is kinda hot to sleep on so I have a faux down topper with elastic ends to secure it around the mattress. I know the sheets are cotton at least. And that's something.
I open the nice new easy to clean tilt-in triple pane super duper efficient window and turn on the fan for some fresh air...makes sleeping so much nicer...set the alarm on my plastic/resin alarm clock, kick off my soft soled plush slippers, take one last step on the thick plush crush resistant, stain resistant carpeting, with ultra thick foam backing, get comfy in my Swedish sleep system with material created by NASA, and my special foam neck stabilizing pillow, turn on some music....on the laptop....PJ Radio...that'll lull me to sleep.
Tomorrow I'll have to start doing something about this..but what? Boycott BP? For REAL? How ...just HOW do I really do that? When you really think about it and consider everything that they have their fingers into, how, how is that possible? While I definitely WILL NOT be purchasing GAS from our local BP Station, is that really making a difference to them? It makes ME feel better, like I'm making a statement...but really, what effect am I having on BP themselves...most likely slim to none. I'll do it anyway, in hopes that at least the statement will have an impact...but I know I'm not emptying their pockets in the least.
Night all. Pleasant dreams.
peace,
jo

did you know that if someone uses a plastic fork they should be beat with an entire truck load of real forks?
I have a couple questions about this disaster, and this seems like as good a thread as any to ask it in...
I heard when this leak first started that the only sure-fire way to stop it is to drill a relief hole next to the existing one and use it to stop the flow of oil. I heard this option would take 3+ months by the time the hole was drilled and the flow stopped.
Does anyone know if they've started drilling that relief hole? or are they exhausting all other options before going ahead with their 3 month project? (or did I misunderstand the option to begin with?)

based on previous incidents of this nature - the only solution that worked was relief wells ... and yes, they take a very long time to finish ... the spill that happened 31 years ago took over 3 months to complete ...
you would think with so much money - they would invest some of that in trying to a) prevent these accidents or b) have containment protocols that work ... but alas - it was a big thumbs down on that front ...

This isn't the first time I've read a statement like this (though maybe the others were from you too) and I dont' understand it. Benefits are to raise money. BP already has money - and they are responsible for dishing it out to those who are affected. So celebrity benefit concerts and the like are not necessary.

"Some people hear their own inner voices with great clearness and they live by what they hear. Such people become crazy, or they become legends." ~ One Stab ~

1. can't believe you typed all that ...
