Question: Do you believe that people should be held responsible for their actions and decisions that affect others?
I do. Whether it's a person who decides not to pay their taxes or a President who sends people in herm's way under questionable reasoning. Both need to be held responsible for their decisions and accountable for the consequences. It's not a matter of 'Blame', rather, placing accountability on the responsible parties.

We all can protect our nation using due diligence. If you discover someone taking lessons at a flight school and just want to learn how to fly a plane and aim it, instead of all of the things required to obtain a pilot's license... it is your responsibility to report them to law enforcement and let them sort out the details. Just as that T-Shirt salesman reported the suspicious behaviour in Times Square.
National Guardsmen should be patrolling our airports instead of nation building in Iraq.

there is more meanings to sympathize with the attackers than what you are implying. nobody on here wishes they were like the attackers. the signs of wise people is they try to see both sides of an issue and try to understand the motives of their adversary. without knowing that there will never be peace. if you fail to try to put yourself in their position you will never understand what motivates them and you will never ever stop them. if you just keep killing them without attempting to gain understanding then you are doing nothing more than creating more terrorists and potentially defeating your own cause....don't confuse "wanting to understand the terrorists' position" with "wanting the terrorists to win"...

I can see people defending Bush based on political beliefs and the fact that he was just a front man, although I'd disagree that that it is a reason to feel sympathy for him. If he was promoting interests other than those of the country knowingly, he does not deserve a pass.

I am, however, dumbfounded that people are defending his intelligence. I would be willing to bet that most of the regs on AMT could win a debate against the guy, and that pretty much all of us have greater book AND street smarts. I'm also willing to bet he would fail a GED exam miserably.

What, exactly, has he done to demonstrate intelligence, aside from his bought-and-paid-for resume? Has he accomplished ANYTHING that was not overshadowed by nepotism?

I was giving you a hard time for your Mel Gibson moment the other day, but this is a pretty solid post ... I can see the value in understanding the terrorists' position, even as I feel that there is no way to condone their actions. Its not that different from the position of a pedophile or another serial murderer ... The behavior is loathsome, but if one believes that such things come about (in part) as a function of social policy, one does have to understand where the behavior comes from and perhaps assume some degree of societal responsibility in fixing the problem.

the only way to have any kind of progress is through understanding. this is true in any field in all of humanity. medicine, domestic and foreign policy, sociology, crime and policework. military strategy, science, etc...a problem can never ever be completely solved without understanding the causes, whether natural like in the body, psychological, genetic, economic, etc... you can not treat or solve these problems without understanding. understanding your enemy is all consuming, you have to put yourself in their position, find their motivation and go from there. bush never did any of this stuff. it is like he was trying to treat a cancer patient without knowing the type of cancer cell and tumor he was up against...
