I gotta vouch for Buffalo 03, Philly III and IV 09 and MSG II. Just a large cut above the rest, including the East Rutherford 06 show.

We should have a ratings criteria system 1-5

    Length
    Rarities
    Crowd
    Unusual Occurances
    Subjective Setlist

  • I think you should wait until the boots for Boston 10' and MSG2 10' come out before you start the tournament. Can't wait to hear Boston but I know personally MSG2 is top 3 and hate for people to not hear before voteing

Ok there's probably a few changes that need to be made here... A lot of people have said "oh, definitely xxxxxx show has to be included". Well in that case, scan the list of 32 that I put up there and given at least 3 shows that it could be eliminated for that show. Really the debate here is to make sure we have the BEST 20-25 shows and another 7-12 shows that are reasonable to include. No way anyone will agree on a top 32.

As for the boots of MSG and Boston this year... I think the lack of boots will be compensated by the aderenaline of it happening this year. There's too much NY & BOston love out there as it is ;)

Being at Jones Beach II and East Rutherford II, I could say the were great shows but unlikely top 32 all time.

Ok... here's my idea at the moment (I'll figure out seeds later after some more suggestions of things missing)

    In chronological order for now

The Academy New Years Eve '92 or pinkPop '92 (not sure)
    Atlanta '94
    Boston III '94
    Soldier Field '95
    Red Rocks '95
    Randalls Island '96
    MSG II '98
    Katowice, Poland II '00

    Hartford '08
    Bonnaroo '08
    Philly III '09
    Philly IV '09
    Boston '10
    MSG II '10

A few are clearly a "cut below" and can be replaced IMO if we find something better... even as is, thats a pretty exclusive list. Had to leave a lot of good, nay, great shows off.

I think 1 seeds should go to Atlanta 94, Soldier Field 95, Seattle II 2000, and Bonnaroo 08. I'd give Mansfield 3 a 1 seed but Fortunate Son hurts the ears. It would definitely be a 2 seed. This is what I think.

just randomly seed them. we are looking for the best, not a ranking. the best will win out no matter who it faces.

Right, thats what I'm going to do ... but it will be semi-random. I dont want Soldier Field to go against Randall Island in the first round. After the random seeding I'll try to move obvious power houses out of each other's way for the first two rounds.

I still think there might be one or two that would be nice to squeeze in... Melbourne '98 and such... anyone see any weak links that I could get rid of?

There needs to be more than 1 show from the Yield tour.

    Mansfield 9/16/98 was great
    Melbourne 3/5/98 was great
Utah 6/21/98 was a very cool setlist

I think I agree.... I think i'd go with Melbourne '98 as a bunch of people have been clamoring for that. What would you take out? Hartford? Maybe Torino '06. I'd like to take out an '03 show but they all are pretty special....hmmm. Help?

ok I posted the 32 in the first post... took out one of the '08 concerts and replaced it with melbourne '98... I think I agree with that move in principle.

  • So now do we have to come up with the #1-#8 seeds? Wouldn't want two favorites meeting in the first round...

there will be 31 total match ups.

Are we doing like 1 a week. that would give everyone plenty of time for listening/discussion/arguing.

or are we going rapid fire.

Philly Spectrum 2003. Still the loudest crowd I have ever been a part of and was at MSG(Night 2) 2010.

Amen. I wasn't at MSG, but I was at Philly '03.

I can't remember at what point of the show it was, but it was in between songs and Eddie went up to talk at the microphone and the crowd was going NUTS! He had to back off the mic and just stood there in awe, shaking his head...and that was IN BETWEEN songs.

I have seen them about 10 times since and no crowd has come close to that one. And that includes the most recent Philly shows, which were great crowds in their own right. I will truly never, ever forget that experience and I'll always associate the Spectrum with that concert. It's going to hurt when they tear that building down.

it seems as if 32 shows isntenough to start with. Pearl Jam has what easily played 500 plus gigs. If you want the to be a March Madness type tourney instead of 32 shows, make it 64, single elimination. But in order to pick those 64 shows, taje a list of about 100-150 shows. To get down to the final field of 64 have a vote on those 100-150 shows. the top 64 get in and based on the amount of votes each shows get that should be their okace in the tourney. I know in march madness they have 4 seperate brackets but i feel it would go smotherer and with less complaining from other members if the whole thing is voted out then show 1 will go against 64, 2 against 63, etc etc. I dont know if this will work but it seems to me to be a good idea. Its 625am here in Boston on a Saturday morn so my brain mightnot be up to speed with what I am typing and I didnt read every post so I dont know if something like this idea came up yet but its just a thought and I think it could work.

Since everyone always is engaging in these (mostly) friendly debates about which show is best... did anyone ever have the idea to create a field of 32 PJ shows and run a single-elimination tournament over a couple of weeks. Basically, you'd have two shows head-to-head in a tournament like March Madness. You could give the playlists to both, maybe some special thing they are known by. Anyone who was at one of the shows could weigh in (or at both and compare them). People would then vote for the winner. After a day or two of voting, winner moves to the sweet 16 (and so on) and loser goes home. Worthwhile summer time waster or no?

It doesn't seem like I have access to posting a poll... but I suppose this could be done manually as well.

If any interest is shown.. we'd just need a list of 32 which shouldn't be hard. There would be some grumbling about the bubble tournaments but the eventual winner won't be confused for #33 anyway so it should be all good.

First of all, i like this idea. Should be FUN. I know that MAYBE alot of people haven't had a chance to hear Boots from the '90's, but don't you think there should be more in the field? ONLY 8 so far?
