i thought 13 was the easiest on the whole course. once he didn't birdie there, you had a feeling it wasn't going to be his day...despite only being 1 back at the time, i think.

ya ... for sure it was the easiest hole ... still ... i thought for sure he was gonna get it back - he was just playing too good not to ... it's like the golf gods didn't want him to win ...

really - the big winner this weekend was the course ...

No the real winner was Ben Hogan's fucking legacy. On and on and on and on about that 1-iron shot. I like golf history as much as the next guy, but it was a little overkill.

Oh and every hole is historic. "On to the group making their way up the historic 18th." Phil putting for par on the historic 11th." It's a great course....but it hosted five majors in the past 100 years. It's not THAT historic is it?

I have one in the basement with a bunch of old clubs. One time a few years ago, I was slicing everything off the tee with my driver so I began teeing off with a three iron. I was hitting the three so well that I decided to break out that one-iron. I couldn't hit it and was back to driver within days. I've since straightened out the slice....for the most part.

phil didn't deserve to win the way he was putting yesterday. congrats to rose.

way to be merion and hats off to the main line and the city of philadelphia. everyone expected the worst, but we came through with flying colors. hopefully it comes back in 10 years or so.

got a gift card to put towards golf lessons for my birthday this weekend. bout time i make my comeback. ;)

I think like the next 10 are already chosen. I think more like 20-25 years. I can't see the neighbors, Haverford College or even the Merion members agreeing to the disruption again within a decade. can't imagine those folks want their lawns torn up by tents again anytime soon.

all in all for all the logistical headaches to set it up and the crazy amount of rain those few days, have to say it was a huge success. Merion obviously showed it's greatness and most of the logistical headaches seemed to work out well.

According to today's Philly Daily News since hosting it's 1st open in 1934 only 5 other clubs have hosted as many as 5.
Baltusrol in Springfield NJ (last in 1993, 5 in total since 1934)
Oakland Hills in Bloomfield Mi. (last in 1996, 5 in total since 1934)
Oakmont CC in Oakmont Pa. (last in 2007, 7 since 1934, next in 2016)
The Olympic Club in San Francisco (last in 2012, 5 in total since 1934)
Pebble Beach (last in 2012, 5 in total since 1934, next in 2019)

They said the same thing about winged foot after the 2006 open and it's hosting the 2020 which is the last venue that's been announced. I can definitely see Merion hosting again in about 10-15 years. They really need to play Bethpage again but from what I've read Mike Davis hates the venue so odds are you'll see a PGA championship or a Ryder Cup before they return to the Black.

Why does Bethpage need another? They have had 2 in the last 12 years. Because of the rain?

Merion will pretty clearly get another one, but I don't expect it to be for another 15-20 years at least, simply due to the logistics and money loss that others have mentioned.

just to interject....some people react to my "fuck tiger" by saying phil is just as big of a douche....I was talking to a guy who follows golf pretty seriously and I asked him....all he knew is that one time phil hit some dude on the wrist and broke the dude's $10 casio watch....phil peeled off his rolex and gave it to the guy

they are booked up through 2020.

bethpage was awesome. did you go to any of those 2? my friend and i want to the one in 2002. his dad got us free passes through his company. free drinks and food. i was so hammered. beligerant drunk. uneccesarily drunk for a golf tourney. only thing i remember vividly was scott hoch's hole in one and the subsequent "usa! usa! usa!" chants since he had a red white and blue flag type shirt on (so close to 9/11). we were camped out at that hole at that time. it was awesome.

then on the way home my buddy and i got lost in queens for a good hour and half after stopping at the liquer store. how we did not get arrested, or kill anyone or ourselves, is beyond me.

for the record, i do not endorse that type of behaviour anymore.

I went to the Thursday and Sunday rounds back in 2002 it was awesome. Spent the first day bouncing around a few tents that we had access to from work so we only caught a few holes but Sunday we walked the course and followed a bunch of groups around. I was on the 5th tee waiting for Phil when he was playing 4 and he hit his approach shot about 5 feet from me. It was pretty cool when he came up and played the shot. We stayed there after and while we were waiting for Tiger I ran into Giuliani who signed my yankees hat. That autograph didn't last long as we got soaked when the rain hit.

Bethpage should absolutely be in the unofficial open rotation ala pebble. What a better fit to host the open than the a muni course. I've played Winged Foot a few times and its a great course and a special place but Bethpage blows it away.

Here's a pic of me on 9 before the 09 open.

It's funny as I was typing this earlier today..I thought to myself "I don't think Pebble Beach has hosted many more than that" but I didn't feel like looking it up. Either way, the announcers were going overboard with all the historic stuff. I thought anyway.

Rain Delay. Volunteers were great, let my kid inside the ropes twice to basically stand on the tee boxes w/ players hitting. Fowler gave the kid two high fives...good time

Played it once it has some really nice views but the course is nothing special. Black bear is decent but the bunkers suck. Ballyowen and wild turkey are much better, Berkshire valley is real nice that's nearby as well. I have played crystal maybe 10x and I wouldnt play there again even if it was free in fact I would rather be waterboarded than play that hell hole.

Friday I start a two-day golf weekend with friends at Locust Hill and Ravenwood near Rochester, NY. Then the wife and kids will be away for 10 days so I am gonna get a few more rounds in before my friend and I play at his member-guest 3-day event at Locust Hill in August. Hoping to get 20 rounds in this year, already at 5 1/2.

Played last weekend and a guy in my group got nailed with a ball in his arm as he went to block his head after someone yelled fore. Guy took it pretty good, laughed it off didn't say anything to the guy who hit him. I've never hit anyone but last year I did nail the cart girls cart twice in the same round, poor girl it was her first day too.

Played a cheeky course today, nags head golf links. nice course, short. Made you think a bit and the wind really fucked with me. They told me the course played an extra club because of the wind but I was long all day. Good time though
