Pay a fee, take a written test and if not surrendering an existing license, take a road test, have your vision checked, pass all three, be issued a license. Safer driver, if driving. If used for an ID, proof of existence, Identification for opening bank accounts, getting utilities turned on, making a major purchase like a car, getting a loan, obtaining credit. What do you use ID for and wouldn’t those same things for an immigrant, legal or otherwise, be beneficial?

    That sounds all good but all of the things you listed you don't need an ID for sans maybe obtaining credit but you can get a bank account.   So there are ways around all of that you listed.

    Wouldn’t a state issued ID establish residency, as in local, not permanent or legal US resident or citizen? I’d be surprised a utility or a landlord or bank would accept a foreign driver’s license to open accounts, savings or credit.

    Bank of America was given a ration of shit for letting people open accounts without a US drivers' licenses.  It is possible to open a bank account here.  It is also easy enough to rent an apartment here.  I know PJ soul commented that it was the same in Canada.

    Yes after a certain period of time you might need to change your residency if you don't have a work visas or if it expires.

    So what you have described is what a normal person would/should do.  I'm asking about illegal/undocumented immigrants/people.

    I ask because I am seeing a push here in NY to be able to give them a drivers license.  

    It doesn't make sense.

    But honestly, the migrant caravan doesn’t need to be reported on daily. It’s a group of people moving on foot, so not that much changes from day to day. It became news because Trump made it so, and more sane voices needed to counteract the narrative of fear. Now that that narrative has mysteriously dropped, there’s no need to write factual articles about the same thing again and again.

    Trump hasn't tweeted about it since before the election. His supporters are suckers.

    It is interesting that only Fox is still running a story and even more interesting that no other media outlets are too.

    How was it a political ploy on both sides? One side blatantly lied and exaggerated the threat leading up Tuesday while the other side talked about health care, and the economy.

    Every news source was following it because Trump brought it up.  News sources were discussing why it is important that we do something.  They went and interviewed the migrants in central America then after the election, everyone stopped reporting on it.

    You even said it was a political ploy and I agree with you.  Both sides got what they wanted from it.

    1-to put Trump as an unemphatic person towards the plights of the migrants.
    2-to show that an "invasion" was coming and to be scared.

    Trump stopped tweeting and the media stopped caring.

    I was talking about the politics of it. When you said political ploy on both sides I thought you meant democrat and republican. It was a ploy by the president and the republicans and fox news carried their water with non stop coverage. The other channels were forced to cover it some because of what the president said but none gave it nearly the attention that fox did.


    When my feed has news stories from the BBC and the Times with titles that say "The Migrant Caravan and why it matters" it means that they did care and wanted to thumb it back at Trump.

    Just what I gathered that Trump stopped tweeting and the rest of the world stopped caring.

    If the other news media outlets thought this was a fight worth supporting(the caravan) then why did they stop on a dime reporting also?

    I think you are giving each side too much credit.
    The sides I am talking about are the Republican Party (and their state run media, Fox) and the democrat party. Not totally sure what your point is. 

    As of Monday, Fox had reporters embedded within the caravan and they were broadcasting live at the border while the president would not shut up about how this invasion was getting closer and closer to our country. Now? It’s hardly getting any attention on the news and the president hasn’t even really talked about it since the election. It was a political con job perpetrated by the president and his allies on Fox.

    I’m just reading this now on the paper version of the NYT during a leisurely Sunday breakfast. I didn’t realize that it’s illegal for US troops to enforce US immigration law. There is basically nothing these troops are allowed to do other than logistical support, which the National Guard is already doing. 

    And this is projected to cost about $200 million.
