Suspect arrested in killing of California police office
A suspect was arrested in the killing of a California police officer, police said Friday. Newman Police Cpl. Ronil Singh was shot and killed during a traffic stop just hours after Christmas.
Gustavo Perez Arriaga was arrested in Bakersfield on Friday as he tried to flee to Mexico, said Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson, whose agency is leading the investigation. The sheriff told reporters that Perez Arriaga was in the country illegally after crossing the border in Arizona and had two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated.
Christianson didn't say when the 33-year-old came to the U.S. but said that the Mexico native has been living here for several years. The sheriff said Perez Arriaga has gang affiliations and multiple Facebook pages with different names.
Authorities also arrested Perez Arriaga's brother, Adrian Virgen, 25, and a co-worker, Erik Razo Quiroz, 32, who lied to police to try to protect him, Christianson said. Late Friday night, the sheriff's office posted on Facebook that they had also arrested Arriaga's girlfriend, Ana Leyde Cervantes, 30, and his brother, Conrado Virgen Mendoza, 34.
The sheriff blamed California's sanctuary law for preventing local authorities from reporting Perez Arriaga to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for his previous arrests, adding that if he had been deported, Singh would still be alive.
"This is a criminal illegal alien with prior criminal activity that should have been reported to ICE," Christianson said at a news conference. "We were prohibited, law enforcement was prohibited because of sanctuary laws, and that led to the encounter with Officer Singh. I'm suggesting that the outcome could have been different if law enforcement wasn't restricted, prohibited or had their hands tied because of political interference."
Christianson spoke about making laws stricter as Singh's brother wept beside him. The sheriff said he didn't know if Perez Arriaga had ever been deported.
The sheriff also said that no motive had been established in this week's killing. Singh also was an immigrant, coming legally from his native Fiji to fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, authorities said.
The 33-year-old had a newborn son and joined the 12-officer Newman police force in 2011. The announcement of arrests comes after a statewide manhunt for the suspect.
Authorities said the officer pulled over the attacker as part of a drunken driving investigation around 1 a.m. the day after Christmas. There was a gunfight as Singh "absolutely tried to defend himself" but he apparently didn't hit the suspect, Christianson said.
The shooting comes amid a political fight over immigration, with President Trump and congressional Democrats at odds over funding for a border wall that has forced a partial government shutdown. Mr. Trump tweeted about Singh's killing Thursday, saying it was "time to get tough on Border Security. Build the Wall!"
The man accused of killing a California police officer during a traffic stop illegally entered into the United States from Mexico through Arizona several years ago, officials said.
The shooting death of 33-year-old Newman police Cpl. Ronil Singh reignited a debate over crimes by undocumented immigrants and prompted President Trump to once again tweet about the need for a border wall.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department announced in a news conference Friday that Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 32, was arrested on a murder warrant at a home near Bakersfield, Calif. Friday following a statewide manhunt.
Officials said he was attempting to escape to Mexico, where he lived before he illegally entered the U.S.
Arriaga is accused of shooting and killing Singh during a traffic stop Wednesday. Singh stopped Arriaga on suspicion of drunk driving.
Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said Friday that Arriaga crossed the U.S.-Mexico border into Arizona "some time ago." He worked as a farm laborer and frequently touted his membership in a street gang on social media.
Christianson called his officer's death preventable and blamed sanctuary cities for protecting Arriaga.
He echoed President Donald Trump's call for more border security. He criticized the state's sanctuary city policies, which limits the cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
The law prevented authorities from reporting Arriaga to U.S. immigration officials for two previous drunk driving arrests, the sheriff said.
"We can't ignore the fact that this could have been preventable," Christianson said.
Trump tweeted about the killing Thursday.
"Time to get tough on Border Security," he wrote. "Build the wall!"

ORCUTT, Calif. (AP) — California authorities are trying to determine why a Central Coast man stabbed and beat his sister, mother and a third person to death in their home.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said 43-year-old David Gerald McNabb was shot to death in a confrontation Friday night when deputies entered the home in the town of Orcutt.
McNabb had been a sheriff's custody deputy from July 2001 until he resigned in March 2012. His record included a September 2012 arrest in neighboring Ventura County and a 2014 conviction for felony domestic violence, the office said.
The victims were identified as his sister, 34-year-old Nicole McNabb; his mother, 64-year-old Melanie McNabb; and 63-year-old Carlos Echavarria. All lived at the scene.
A Sheriff's Office statement said the county dispatch center received a call at 8:05 p.m. from a person who entered her home and found a bloody scene inside.
"She discovered a victim covered in blood in a bathtub, fled the residence and called for help," it said without identifying that person.
Responding deputies entered the home, contacted the suspect and determined he was armed with a rifle, the statement said.
Emergency notifications were sent to the neighborhood telling people to shelter in place, and the sheriff's special tactical unit and hostage negotiators were summoned.
Deputies learned there were additional people inside and made further entry into the residence.
"They made contact with the armed suspect, a confrontation ensued during which the suspect was initially shot with less lethal munitions, followed by the use of deadly force," the statement said. "The suspect was transported to a hospital by ambulance and was subsequently pronounced dead."
The three victims were found inside the home.
Orcutt is about 150 miles (241 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
Just wondering, does this one count or do we only care about those that use guns to kill?

But what was the “responsible” gun owner doing with a rifle after being convicted for felony domestic violence? Oh, right, NRA.

I don't understand your point. No one had ever said that immigrants don't commit crimes. The point is always that they are no more inclined to violence than native born citizens. There is little nexus between the gun debate and the alien debate.
Just wondering, does this one count or do we only care about those that use guns to kill?

My point was my bud halifax likes to show every single shooting that occurs in this country but fails to show the whole picture. A lot of violence occurs without firearms. And I was definitely surprised that no one discussed the original article I posted.

But what was the “responsible” gun owner doing with a rifle after being convicted for felony domestic violence? Oh, right, NRA.
