  • The new CBA is being announced. There's going to be a luxury tax of sorts on draft picks. There will be the same type of "slot" suggestions there are now, but there will be penalties for exceeding it. Going over by 0-5% will just be a tax on the overage, but anything more than that results in the loss of draft picks. I think going over between 5-10% results in the tax and a loss of the next year's 1st round pick and it gets harsher for 10-15% and over 15%. It's essentially a hard cap for anything more than 5% over slot because teams will not give up future picks unless a player is a sure thing--and the list of "sure things" that turned out to be duds is pretty long.

HGH testing begins in the upcoming spring training for all players. There will be random unannounced testing of players in the offseason and players can be tested during the season if there is "reasonable cause." There is room in the agreement for random in-season testing to be implemented, too, but they haven't worked out the logistics of it yet.

The extra Wild Card teams might start in 2012. They have until March 1 to figure out if it'll happen this year.

I just got caught up on the new CBA.

I love the one game Wild Card playoffs - would've been nice to have those last year.

Apparently the Astros are going to the AL in 2013, but MLB still hasn't determined a schedule format. Personally I'd like to see a little bit fewer divisional games - say 14 against each team. As much fun as it is for us Phillies fans to invade DC 9 times a year. (it'd still be 7) This would save most of us from a few more Sunday Night Yankees v Red Sox games. Then you could see the other teams in your league more often - 8 or 9 times each. (from a Phila perspective - it's ridiculous to only see ancient rivals like the Pirates, Dodgers, Giants & Cubs 6 times a year; of course nobody is going to be more "ancient" than my team - ba da dum) Keep the interleague games at 18 for everyone.

Also we won't have to hear about how interleague games have higher attendance, because they won't since the games won't all be on weekends in June.

One change I'd like to see to the playoff format: have the #1 seed play the team with the worst record in the Division Series, whether it's a Wild Card or a #3 Seed, intra-division or not.

Sorry if all this got talked about already - I couldn't stomach this thread for about a month.

    Get comfortable in those seats...

Can they go to a commercial during the review and skip them between innings later on? (like football finally started doing) Nevermind - that makes too much sense.

This is absolutely horrible and my only complaint. It gets much much harsher and can get up to a 100% tax. It also is going to include international free agents under 23. I don't get this at all. Baseball is definitely going to lose athletes to this rules.

  • I forgot to mention: all draft picks' contracts will be minor league deals. I don't mind the draft rule changes so much. It'll keep agents like Boras from holding teams hostage or bullying them into passing on a guy so a richer team can take him and pay him 50% over their pick's slot. Amateur players holding out for ridiculous bonuses is hurting the teams that don't have the same revenue stream large-market teams have.

Also, if a team loses picks for going over its slot, the pick will be given to one of the worst 10 teams (maybe 15 teams, I'm not 100% sure) in a lottery system.

Another thing to come from this: the luxury tax revenue (for both payroll and draft taxes) will only be paid out to the bottom 15 teams (in terms of revenue).

anyone else think this new deal is gonna favour the big market teams even more? ... the compensatory draft picks are sandwich picks and that is only if the team with the free agent doesn't put in a qualifying offer of at least the average salary of the top 125 players ... not sure what that number amounts too ... but it seems that the big market teams can now spend even more freely without worrying about the farm system ... i didn't read all the details - so, i could be wrong here ...

Kind of partial to Matt Kemp winning NL MVP. Braun is the man though and the Brewers did make the playoffs. Both are worthy in my opinion. I am sure Kemp's $160 million dollar deal makes losing out less painful!

  • I don't think it will hurt small market teams. For the really good players, the minimun qualifying offer won't be enough to get them to sign without exploring free agency--especially on a 1-year deal--so I don't think teams will shy away from making the qualifying offers in most cases. Since the number of players that will require compensation will shrink, it will keep teams from having to offer deals to middle relievers that they would obviously accept since they'd never make that much in any other situation.

There are also provisions in how revenue is shared and how the forfeited draft picks are given out that only help the smaller teams. Plus, it's become much harder for amateur players to hold smaller teams up for insane contracts since there are limits on them, so that will free up some money for them to spend on major league players.

I also think the extra Wild Card team in each league will benefit the bad teams at the trade deadline. More teams will be buyers because they'll think they have a shot at a playoff spot, so the demand will outweigh the supply more than it does now. That could lead to sellers getting better prospects when they trade a player away in July.

one game does not a playoff make. and what happens when multiple teams are tied for that 5th spot....a one game playoff to play a one game playoff?

baseball is all about the series. world series, lcs, divisional series, and all season long they play 3 game series. not one game here, not one game there. one game is so not baseball.

    hate it.

  • Exactly. Imagine if that had been in place this year. That last day of the season would have been completely different and drama-free. The Rays and Cardinals fighting so hard to catch up to Boston and Atlanta would have been meaningless. Yes, the Angels and Giants were close to them for a while, but the final 3-4 games would have had no meaning for anyone instead of the final game meaning everything to 4 teams.

In 2010, the 2nd Wild Card team in the AL would have been Boston, who finished 6 games behind the Yankees. In 2009, the 2nd AL Wild Card would have been Texas, who finished 8 games behind Boston. The NL's 2nd Wild Card team that year would have been San Francisco, who finished 4 games behind Colorado. In 2008, the Yankees would have made it despite finishing 6 games behind Boston. In 2007, the Tigers and Mariners would have had to play a 1-game playoff to see who played the Yankees in the 1-game Wild Card round--both teams were 6 games behind NY. In 2006 the White Sox were 5 games behind Detroit and they would have been the 2nd Wild Card. That's 4 times from 2006-2010 that the 2nd Wild Card team would have been from the same division as the Wild Card team and finished at least 4 games behind the fist team. When 2 teams within the same division are separated by that much for the Wild Card, I don't see how a 1-game playoff is fair. Even in close races, every season from 2006-2011 would have had 1 of the 1-game playoffs take place between teams in the same division. They play each other 18 times, but the 19th game is the one that matters?

Um, yeah. That would be fucking awesome!

They can't play best-of-3 because it would drag the calendar out way too far and the division winners would sit around waiting for 5 days. So it's keep it the way it is or add one WC team and play a one game playoff. They are trying to make division titles and finishing in first place more meaningful.

as a comparison ... percentage of teams that make the post season by sport

    NFL: 12 out of 32 (37.5%)
    NBA: 16 out of 30 (53.3%)
    NHL: 16 out of 30 (53.3%)
    MLB: 8 out of 30 (26.7%) ... now i guess 10 out of 30 (33.3%)
