Collateral Murder

WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff. Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded. For further information please visit the special project website http://www.collateralmurder.com.

pretty sad, the helicopters sees them walking with a camera and says it's an rpg launcher and calls the reporter a "fucking prick" then "lights them up". what we told Reuters is there was a gun fight going on and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time...as you can see the US helicopter opened fire without being shot at. Reuters tried to get this tape for over 2 years, now it's finally been released

video is here

nice when a van comes to collect the bodies and the wounded we open fire on them again because they are probably there to collect the weapons that didn't exist

how dare they pick up a wounded reporter and try to take him to safety!?!?

and when troops arrive on the scene and find 2 wounded kids in the van and say they need an evac to take the children to the hospital on the US base his orders are to hand the bodies over to the iraqi police and let them handle it....how thoughtful

and then the pilot's of the helicopters say how it's their own fault for bringing the kids...which may be right to a point but how does that justify what the pilots did??

wow, i'm so much happier knowing my tax money is paying for this and not health care! america, fuck yeah!!

I saw this at Rachel Maddow's blog.

While it's horrific, can anyone really claim to be surprised that soldiers in a war of occupation intentionally kill innocent civilians?
Have we forgotten Lt. William Calley and the My Lai massacre so soon? Or Nisar Square?

Here's where the importance of a free and fearless press comes in. CBS exposed My Lai because we used to have such a thing as a free and fearless press. Now we have corporate media conglomerates whose only concern is the bottom line. Thus, they'd rather cozy up to the powers that be lest they lose their access privileges.

  • The people in that van are heroes risking their lives to save Saaed (I think that's who they were carrying away?) It's very unfortunate they had kids with them.

And it's nauseating how much pleasure the soldiers seem to be taking.

It doesn't justify it, you're right. Obviously the Apache pilot is at fault here, but the same question did cross my mind. Even that first statement you typed out made me wonder: "Two young children involved in the rescue ...". Who brings their kids into a place where bullets and shells are flying around? "Hey, we need some folks to go out on a dangerous rescue mission. I volunteer ... My kids!" I don't get this kind of stuff. I also asked why old ladies engage in hand-to-hand combat with fully armed IDF troopers, and everyone thought I was a terrible person for wondering about that too.

Exactly, the usual "blame the victim" mentality. Like, how dare that woman wear such a tight dress, she forced me to rape her!

  • Aw man WTF were those pilots thinking? I could even tell that they weren't carrying Ak's. Not only that they didn't even give them a chance to drop their weapons even though they weren't carrying any This shit sickens me. I hope they spend the rest of ther natural lives in prison for this.

i don;'t know, either, but the pilots clearly violated the rules of engagement. no one ever fired at them, especially the van that came to pick the wounded reporter up. their rules are they can not open fire unless they are fired upon, that's why when the reporter was crawling on the ground the pilot kept saying "come on, just pick up a gun, i just need you to pick up a gun..." which he never does, neither does anyone in the van

No, people think you're 'a terrible person' because you always, unfailingly, take the side of those committing these crimes. You always take the side of the powerful and try and make excuses for their behaviour.

And here you are once again implying that it's the fault of these Iraqi's that they were shot to pieces.

i read somewhere that the van was taking the kids to music lessons and happened to be passing by and saw people lying in the street so they stopped to help....

"War it happens, it's just collateral damage."

It isn't war. We should never have been there. Americans would be going ape shit if this happened to US soldiers or civilians, yet we kill indiscriminately like this ALL THE TIME.

I wonder why Americans are hated?? It's a head scratcher.

Unfortunately, these children live amongst bombs an bullets. That's their life. If they want to go anywhere, quite often then need to run the gauntlet. No one deliberately sent those kids there, just passer-bys helping fellow human beings. I guess they didn't thing they would be shot at again.

It's a very twisted way to see things just to be able deflect from vile actions of those soldiers. They deliberately (and with glee) fired on unarmed and innocent people. No excuse whatsoever.

When it comes to your pondering of why old ladies engaged in hand to hand 'combat' with fully armed IDF soldiers... because that's all they can do. They defend themselves, their children, their grandchildren, their way of life. They have no guns or other armement. Just their fists (and maybe a few rocks). They do what they need to do.

More melodramatic BS. Its funny how people are a lot more civil and reasonable in private, but in public, they have no reading comprehesion skills.

"Take sides"? I do no such thing. As usual, you're just angry because you selectively read what people post, and then your ignorant little watchdog badbrains has to come in here to back you up. Hypocrite.
