Something needs to be done about the disgusting business of concert ticket sales. I realize PJ tried many years ago, but to go through a pre-sale process like I did today, an to receive NOTHING for my 7 hours of waiting on ticketmaster's site , only to see jacked up prices on stubhub, etc, is bull shit!!

I had an asshole charge me 200 dollars above the face value for tickets to one of the Philly shows in the fall. Making money off of a PJ concert is truly repulsive, and, if I could, I would have loved nothing more than to beat the shit out of the asshole that made a profit off of me.

This leads to larger issues in our society. Today, it is all about the almighty dollar. Nothing else matters. It makes me sick, and it is one of the many reasons I am leaving this country for good. The other reasons you ask?
1. the abhorrant consumer and material culture - buy, buy, buy, all to build a fake image. Burn down the malls!!
2. Facebook/myspace. our lives have become virtual. We care more about how we portray ourselves on these stupid sites than who we really are. Disgusting. It is more important to us how many friends we have in a fake world than in real life.
3. Republicans.
4. Celebrity worship. Are we that pathetic that we need to follow every move that a celebrity makes. Get a life!
5. Intellectual laziness (e.g. screaming Socialism when you don't know what it means - 9/10 people who shout it freely). It is running rampant. Turn off the TV and get involved!
6. Our false sense of American Exceptionalism. Wake the fuck up. Big guns and a thriving (yet talentless) entertainment industry do not make a nation great.

TURN OFF THE DAMN TV!!!!

    I agree man!
well, except the FB/myspace thing. I think if you use it in moderation it is an amazing thing. I have reconnected with a lot of people. I don't care how many friends I have though, but it's nice to go on there and see pics of my friends kids at my leisure or to find some new music. I also follow a lot of local bands on there, and it makes it easy to see when/where they're playing.

but I agree on everytihng else you said. it's a sad state of affairs when someone like octomom is famous for her stupidity.
I cancelled cable 10 yrs ago, now all I watch is Bob Ross on Pbs anntenna

I should amend my facebook rant for people like you - htere is some good that can come from it. However, it is, in my opinion, destructive for our society.
Also, as far as getting back in touch with people, there's a reason that I lost touch with them...hahaha.

Don't go to concerts then. simple. I love how you say a scalper charged you $200 over face value for a ticket? Did he actually have a gun at your head forcing you to give him the money?

I wanted to go to the show, and those were the only tickets I could get. read a statement, then give it some thought. It is the principle that some jerkass wanted to make money off of a PJ show. TO me, a cursed idealist, that is wrong and disgusting. maybe if it was a Jay Z show, where it is all about bling and cash, it would make sense. But not PJ, please not PJ

Not to jump on the piggy-pile, but you and only you decided to pay $200 above face. If no one was willing, no one would have to. I'm sorry, but G-R-E-E-D is good. I guess you could sell all your possessions and move to some desserted island. That's about the only way you're going to escape it.

The real problem is that people like you continue to pay the $200 over.
If it weren't for that they would be out of business and would not be able
to charge the prices that they do. Keep paying the price and then keep
coming back here to bitch about it time and time again.
  • Maybe you should have bought tickets in advance? Its really not that hard. If its not worth your time and money to try to go to a show then....dont go! And please dont cry. People can still go on Facebook, worship celebrities, and be Republican and be great people. Just reading what you spend your time thinking about makes me think your just a nasty, negitive, self loathing person who I would never want to know. "Yea lets go get a beer and talk about how much we hate everything and everyone", sounds like fun. Brighten up a little or the people living in your new country won't like you eaither.

Bingo! I love how the original poster said he would have liked nothing more than to punch the guy who forced him to pay $200 over face. I do agree with him that ticket scalpers suck, but that's why I won't give in to them. I understand the love for the band, but at that point, i'd have to cut my losses and catch them next time or in another city. I would rather pay the $200 in travel costs than to feed the problem, which is all the OP did.

  • I know it sucks. The real problem I think is Pearl Jam is way too popular and play way to few shows a year so it makes the dash to get tickets real hard. I have a busy life so the only real show that is doable for me right now is Friday at MSG and it doesn't look good. But hey, there will be more shows.

I would never pay 200 over face. Look on ebay and be patient. I got a ticket from some nice canadian for 10/30 on ebay and with shipping it only cost me $80 which is cheaper then I could have gotten it through Pearl Jam or Ticketmaster. Yeah it was slightly behind, but still the best show I ever saw. The most important thing is to be inside.

I'm sorry to say it, but you are all missing the point.

And, I am not a negative, self-loathing individual. I am actually an extremely hard-working individual who is currently putting himself through a PhD program. My rant simply was a way to vent about many things that I see wrong with this country. The main ones being corporate domination (see the Supreme Court Citizens United Case) and unethical business practices fueled by greed and materialism. it saddens me that it has trickled down to the everyday lives of individuals and corrupted something as simple as a concert.

And again, the dude that sold me the tickets was a Ten Club member, and I didn't appreciate the fact that he wanted to make a quick buck. It just didn't sit well with me especially since it was for a PJ show; and I don't think it would sit well with many. And, I didn't buy tickets in advance, because I recently moved and wasn't expecting to be in the same region as the city of brotherly love.

I will gladly answer all of your accusation at any time, PM me.

And to ML181059, I would love to hear what exactly sickened you. The 6 things I posted are grounded in fact. Look around at the changes (not for the better) in this country.

AJ, give the guy a break. He's just venting his frustation with some very valid points.

Look, with all due repsect, AJ, your pofile says that you are fairly new to this site, in contrast to other posters who have been here for 4 or 5 years minimum, and you've posted like 300 times, half of which are directing people to your signature to let them know how many PJ shows you've attended. The behavior is very characteristic of someone young and naive... or of a PJ poser who's just looking to fit in.

Either way, No need to be so harsh in your posts, we're all friends here.

I'm from NY originally, and I work hard to not perpetuate the stereotypes associated with that fine city, so you would serve the people of Philly equally well, by showing some brotherly love.

Still... you CHOSE to pay the $200.00 profit to the scalper (Fan Club member or not). The profit he made... came out of YOUR POCKET. The scalper didn't make the profit from Pearl Jam or the Ten/VHC... he made it off of you... by your own choosing.
If you feed the scalper... you are part of the problem. They would cease to exist if there was nothing to make from it.

pearl jam should do ticket sales the way the grateful dead used to do it; mail order. you would send in your check and request of shows and you would get what you got or you would get your check returned. the scalpers didn't like that method and it worked. pearl jam needs to start playing stadiums and stop with these tiny 20,000 seat intimate shows!!! WE WANT TO SEE YOU PLAY NOT STRESS OVER TICKETS!!!!!!

hate to break it to you, but leaving the united states isn't going to solve your problem. unless you actually plan on getting into politics and changing the system from the inside there's no point to complaining. it's easy to point out faults, but ranting on here isn't going to help your cause.

Couldn't disagree more. Just because these issues aren't causing me physical harm (a silly statement) doesn't mean that I should not desire to detach myself from them, and a society that perpetuates their importance.
As far as surrounding myself with people who value the same things, I have done that, and I am not the only one who feels the way that I do.

To RustyShackleford: Unfortunately, I feel that the republicans (mainly in D.C.) embody a society that I disagree with - one grounded in greed, consumerism, and false beliefs in social darwinism. I am not saying burn them at the stake, I am, however, saying they are to blame for many things i oppose in this society.
