Something needs to be done about the disgusting business of concert ticket sales. I realize PJ tried many years ago, but to go through a pre-sale process like I did today, an to receive NOTHING for my 7 hours of waiting on ticketmaster's site , only to see jacked up prices on stubhub, etc, is bull shit!!

I had an asshole charge me 200 dollars above the face value for tickets to one of the Philly shows in the fall. Making money off of a PJ concert is truly repulsive, and, if I could, I would have loved nothing more than to beat the shit out of the asshole that made a profit off of me.

This leads to larger issues in our society. Today, it is all about the almighty dollar. Nothing else matters. It makes me sick, and it is one of the many reasons I am leaving this country for good. The other reasons you ask?
    1. the abhorrant consumer and material culture - buy, buy, buy, all to build a fake image. Burn down the malls!!
    2. Facebook/myspace. our lives have become virtual. We care more about how we portray ourselves on these stupid sites than who we really are. Disgusting. It is more important to us how many friends we have in a fake world than in real life.
    3. Republicans.
    4. Celebrity worship. Are we that pathetic that we need to follow every move that a celebrity makes. Get a life!
    5. Intellectual laziness (e.g. screaming Socialism when you don't know what it means - 9/10 people who shout it freely). It is running rampant. Turn off the TV and get involved!
    6. Our false sense of American Exceptionalism. Wake the fuck up. Big guns and a thriving (yet talentless) entertainment industry do not make a nation great.

    TURN OFF THE DAMN TV!!!!

This thread was some good late night reading. Dude, pack it in and head to Finland, not sure what else to tell you...

my comments on your reasons for leaving us:
burn the malls.....am I supposed to sew my own clothes?
facebook....get with it brother, facebook is pretty cool and useful
republicans.....thats a pretty blanket statment, in fact it seems that maybe you're being intellectually lazy in grouping all together. Im a Republican. I work hard for my money and want to keep it. I dont want to share it with you.

    Cosmo and Mulder:
Again you are both simply missing the point. Cosmo, the Philly incident was me needing tix at the last minute. Step away from the specifics of that incident and see what I am saying about the industry, and people I suppose, as a whole. And, I doubt I would have been able to sneak into the Vet. My problem is with the industry. Also, this dude, although he was scalping, wasn't a scalper, he was a PJ fan and 10c member (or so he said). Please get the point.
Mulder: How can you say someone who uses his time to volunteer for causes he believes in (as opposed to being a selfish, greedy pig who sits in front of the boob tube), and who is putting himself through a PhD program in order to better society, intellectually lazy? That's absurd! Seriously, you're way off and rather insulting.

I can understand your anger. But like Cosmos said, you didn't NEED (like you stated on the quote above on the first line) to go to the show. You WANTED to go. Just like last week when the SEC tourney was here in Nashville and I'm a huge Kentucky fan and I wanted to go but didn't want to pay $200+ to the scalpers for tickets. Was the world going to end if I didn't go? No. So instead, I watched it at home. We'll chalk up the misunderstanding to the late hour and your anger over not getting tickets. Kudos and good luck on your PhD and (if you decide to go for it) JD

    Loved the OP.

    Move overseas you'll love it.

It will strengthen your opinion of how f'd up the US is everyday.

All the while, many people will be saying the US is greatest country on Earth because it has been beaten into their brains since birth and they haven't even stepped out of buttf*#kville, USA.

I pity them and am embarrassed for them.

    wow

Where are you going? When are you leaving?

I have opportunities to teach at universities in Europe or Canada. Will leave once my dissertation is done.

    Thanks for asking

Also, thanks to does_it_inspire, and kudos in being able to identify a charged, and maybe immature rant, albeit one that does express my views.

Hey man, good on you for expressing your opinion. I gotta break it to you, Americanisation has gripped nearly the entire planet. The whole world revolves around the dollar, celebrities and the American way of life. I'm not complaining about Americanisation, It has made up a large portion of my life, and to be frank, I enjoy my life.

The only Western country that really challenged (to an extent) Americanisation or 'cocacolonistion' was France. If it's Americanisation you wish to escape from, you best start looking into the third world. That's not trying to be smart or anything, but it really affects everywhere including little old Sydney where I'm from.

However, if you're looking for an awesome place to live, well my friend, Sydney is it.

This has been interesting. One reason for the OP (down with OPP?) is to vent, rant, express displeasure at the intrusion of business into all aspects of life. I know, I know, this is a capitalist system and that's how it works. That doesn't mean I, or anyone else, have to like it, just because I was born into it. I am a cursed idealist, Thoreauvian, Marxist, minimalist (except when it comes to books and music) hippie. Second, I wanted to see what everyone's reactions were going to be. I study this shit, what do you want from me?

P.S. the kids in Haiti post - irrelevant. Those types of "kids are starving" statements simply do not work. And, if not for health issues, I would have been on a volunteer trip to Haiti to help out. That's what I do with my free time, I volunteer to help others - aaahhhh, Socialism!!!!.

There have been many good arguments of disagreement, as well as many of agreement. The bottom line is it is difficult to argue with someone who has an opinion - especially one that can be backed up with research and investigation.

Cheers, and enjoy whatever shows you will be going to.

Fuck that shit !!! Dont even waste your time on that. I would try the day of the show or start to befriend people who go to shows. THere are several people with extra tixs the day of the show and will only charge you face value. Heck, I have known people to give tickets away for free to people who are in need. I was one of those fortunate ones and recieved 2nd row in Toledo 2004...Stone's side. Since I was treated with a free ticket, I have given tickets away for shows. The last episode was during the Philly shows last year cause I had an extra. It all depends on who you know and trust. I am sure I will get burned and some douche will sell the ticket I give them, but karma can be a bitch and it will all work itself out.

    One last thing....
Dont expect to be given everything a silver platter. You may not even find people who have extras or not willing to sell at all. Fans have become a little less giving and trustful in the past couple of years because of greed and all the me, me, me attitude.

    Good luck !!!
