if Texas wins Bengie Molina will become the 110th player to win a championship with two teams. If San Francisco wins, Uribe, Rowand, Burrell, Renteria, Lopez will have that distinction. Uribe and Rowand were on the 2005 White Sox, Burrell was a 2008 Phillie, Renteria was a 1997 Marlin and Lopez was a 2007 Red Sox. If those five win, that will make 114 players to win at least one championship with multiple teams.

Yup, I'm a bitter loser. I've never been good at it, despite all my practice.

I'm still bitter about the Stanley Cup, and in that we lost to a better team. So losing to this trash heap is just infuriating. But, as many said, Giants outplayed the Phils and deserved to win.

As far as WS ratings go, who gives a shit? Besides stupid articles in the paper, anyway. I'll try to watch.

Oh yeah, as far as Lee becoming the Yankees' 1A next year? He is 10x as good as anybody on that staff.

goddam....what can I say? i've endured nearly ALL the heartbreak the giants have had since they moved west (yeah, I'm old ). just amazing that, since the last day of the season, the giants have kept coming up big in all the situations they always seemed to choke in (other than that one horrible loss to the braves ). all these years have made me a pessimist....in the first inning, I was already thinking about cain v. hamels. in the 8th and 9th, i kept seeing 3 run homers :shock: . as brian wilson said, I've got a mini ulcer forming.

I'm hungover and didn't get enough sleep...I can't even put into words how good it feels to take down a very, very good team. it's good we get a few days off before the torture starts anew. :?

(10-26) 17:34 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- There isn't a prettier swing in baseball than Josh Hamilton's. It's a smooth-flowing force of nature, and the ball leaves his bat as a veritable gunshot. Aficionados could stand around the batting cage for hours, just watching the man hit.

Tim Lincecum's changeup seems to defy the laws of physics. It takes a sudden dip, then makes a cartoonish right turn. Delivered to perfection, it might be the single most devastating pitch in the game.

Who gets the edge in this classic matchup? There are no absolutes in baseball, but smart money leans toward The Freak.

It's something you hear every October - good pitching beats good hitting - but it's more than a cliche. It's a formula that works, and it's exactly why the World Series has returned to San Francisco.

The Giants are in position to make history because Matt Cain can spot his fastball on a dime, because Brian Wilson has moxie, because Madison Bumgarner acts twice his age, because Lincecum is a rock star and the relief pitchers seem to arrive in droves, each more effective than the last.

For all the abuse he has taken, Barry Zito is a pretty good pitcher with an admirable track record - but he couldn't make this roster. Jonathan Sanchez is plenty upset about his recent wildness, but he hasn't been shelled off the mound since the third week of August.

If your baseball memory has sufficient life, you undoubtedly recall the "Miracle Mets" of 1969. Their championship seemed miraculous because, much like the current Giants, their lineup feasted on the improbable. Cleon Jones was the only hitter to clear .280, and only Tommie Agee (26) hit more than 12 home runs. Mix in some Weis, add a touch of Swoboda and pour the Shamsky; good luck trying to defeat the regal Baltimore Orioles with that group.

The Mets did it because they had Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Gary Gentry and a 22-year-old reliever named Nolan Ryan. They thrilled their fans with key hits and sensational defense, but pitching told that story, as it so often does. The World Series is Christy Mathewson, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Lefty Gomez, Whitey Ford, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Jack Morris, Mariano Rivera, and now Cliff Lee, the wondrous postseason pitcher (7-0, 1.26 lifetime) who faces Lincecum in today's opener.

If you scan San Francisco's World Series history - and it doesn't take long - the Giants have always been stifled by superior pitching. We'd be telling a different story if Willie McCovey's liner had sailed over Bobby Richardson's glove, but the 1962 Yankees won that seven-game series on the strength of complete-game wins by Ford, Bill Stafford and Ralph Terry (twice), limiting McCovey, Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda to a collective 13-for-62 (.209) with four RBIs.

Barry Bonds owned the 2002 Series, or so it seemed, but when it came down to Game 7, a fearless young Texan named John Lackey sent the Giants home in ruins. As little as we remember about the 1989 Series, literally rocked off its foundation by the Loma Prieta earthquake, it's a simple fact that a terrific Giants lineup - opening with Brett Butler, Robby Thompson, Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell and Matt Williams - was shackled by the A's Dave Stewart, Mike Moore and Dennis Eckersley.

Because it's baseball, a game in which "Grab some pine, meat" has its own special meaning, nothing is for certain. When this franchise last won a World Series, as the New York Giants in 1954, it beat a 111-win Cleveland team with three full-blown aces - Bob Lemon, Early Wynn and Mike Garcia - in its rotation. The 1971 Pirates and '76 Reds won titles on the strength of near-mythical performances by Roberto Clemente and Johnny Bench. The Atlanta Braves won 14 straight division titles, employing such rotation mainstays as Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Steve Avery and Greg Maddux along the way, but just one World Series (1995).

More often, though, pitching writes the headlines. The A's still can't get over the fact that they were beaten by Orel Hershiser's Dodgers in the 1988 World Series, or that a wicked procession of "Nasty Boys" relievers - Rob Dibble, Randy Myers and Norm Charlton - shut them down so consistently during the Reds' sweep in 1990.

From 1949 through '56, the Brooklyn Dodgers rode the strength of Duke Snider, Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella and many others into five World Series against the Yankees - but won only once (1955). Cincinnati's Big Red Machine, a fabulous team that got even better with the acquisition of Joe Morgan, earned two championships to Oakland's three in the 1970s. And sometimes it's just a single man in charge, a pitcher who writes the script all by himself: Milwaukee's Lew Burdette in 1957, Detroit's Mickey Lolich in '68 (each of them had three complete-game wins) or Sandy Koufax, striking out 15 in the opener at Yankee Stadium in 1963, then closing out the sweep in Game 4 at Dodger Stadium.

All of this is terribly unfamiliar to the Giants. In the 11 postseason series they contested in San Francisco before this year, they didn't have a rotation believed to have a clear-cut edge. There was too much Shawn Estes in the past, too much Scotty Garrelts, Atlee Hammaker and Sidney Ponson. For all we know, Texas might prove to be superior in the coming days with the likes of Lee, C.J. Wilson, Colby Lewis and Neftali Feliz, but the forecasts don't see it that way. The Giants entered this October with an edge they haven't known before.

So it starts with Lincecum against Hamilton, and kid, whatever you do, don't throw the fastball low and in. Lincecum facing Bengie Molina should be a treat, for as much as he enjoys working with Buster Posey (who wouldn't?), Lincecum reveres Molina ("He molded me") and knows that, even now, he's a huge threat in clutch situations.

For the ultimate in professionalism, try Cain against Michael Young, the Rangers' third baseman. The stoic Cain is bringing his career to a peak at the perfect time, and Posey claims he's the easiest Giants pitcher to catch because he so seldom misses the target. As for Young, check out this succession of hit totals from 2003 through '07: 204, 216, 221, 217, 201. He's coming off a down year in that department (186), but 91 RBIs defined his season.

Bumgarner against Elvis Andrus will be a beauty. Bumgarner is so established in the Giants' rotation, and so utterly oblivious to the spotlight, he looks like a fixture for years to come. Andrus is pure electricity, at bat and in the field, and he outplayed Derek Jeter so convincingly in the ALCS, the Yankees are weighing the merits of signing Jeter (they'll do it, but they've seen the future).

Finally, I'm picturing ninth-inning confrontations between two of the game's most emancipated souls: Vladimir Guerrero and Brian Wilson. Guerrero grew up as a genius at his craft, discovering in his teens that he could hit any pitch, at any location, with authority. We see him now at 35, still not the least bit concerned about a pitcher's credentials or intimidation tactics. There are times when any pitch to Guerrero is a mistake.

As for Wilson, that high-IQ madman of the Giants' bullpen, this is what he told reporters when the Giants arrived in Philadelphia during the NLCS: "When I'm on the field, my one thought is to completely annihilate you and do everything in my power to make you fail. I don't have a single thought about what my hair looks like, what my shoes look like, why my shirt's unbuttoned. I don't care who you are or what you've done in this game.

"Right now, it's a one-on-one battle and nothing's going to stop me from doing what I need to do to get the game over."
