Favourite band before you discovered Pearl Jam?

  • Didn't get into Pearl Jam until 93 (I was 13) but had already discovered RATM, Nirvana, RHCP and Guns n roses. These were the first bands that really 'spoke' to me but none of them quite had the impact Pearl Jam eventually did. In fact, I seem to remember that the first rock song I really took any notice of was Iron Maiden's 'Can I Play with Madness' when I was about 8 (except for the 60s/70s stuff I grew up on). It was the first song that made me think, 'This ought to piss my parents off...' :D
  • Great question!

    Can't give just one....

    Led Zeppelin
    Beastie Boys
    Mother Love Bone
  • Pearl jam was actually my first, I was about 6-7 years old and my big brother (in his early 20's) that i looked up to was big into them which made me like them.
Pearl Jam was my 1st favorite and still my favorite. thx big-bro!

For me I guess it was Styx as they were the only band whose album's I would listen to beginning to end. Other music like Van Halen, GNR, Def Leppard, etc, I would only listen to lead singles. Man, I had a terrible appreciation for music. Then off to college where all the rage was "Alternative" (91) so I rejected it because it felt like people liked it just because it was the in thing. I heard Alive and Evenflow sometime in late 91 and decided to not like it just because it was part of that alternative thing

    Then I heard Black :D

I remember when Vs was on the verge of release, I felt like a little kid on Christmas eve. Such a contrast.

Ok, more than what you asked for, sorry :)

  • Great thread.

I was born in 77. When I discovered PJ, I had just come out of my embarrassing "rap" phase (thank god!) and had thrown myself headfirst into classic rock. I would say my favorites until I heard PJ at 14 were CCR, Zep, and Lynyrd Skynard. My first rock band I was ever in to was INXS in the 80's. I might even have "Kick" on cassette somewhere...
  • i got given PUMP for christmas in 1989, i was 7 the week later so AEROSMITH for me, i didn't follow music but love in an elevator was everywhere at the time as were dude looks like a lady and rag doll from the permanent vacation album. didn't really know pearl jam until YIELD. i was 15 and just met a guy who transferred to our school, he was into nirvana and the other seattle scene bands (PJ, SG, AIC) and asked me to play bass in his band, i did't even play bass. so then NIRVANA came knocking but about a month later i was in the local HMV and saw YIELD in the new releases, game over for me, i'd found them. but from the age of 7 to 15 it was aerosmith, even the 70's stuff, didn't get many of the sexual lyrics til i was much older but that made me fall in love with them again.
BY THE WAY, I THREW THAT 'JUST PUSH PLAY' ALBUM OUT THE WINDOW SAME DAY I BOUGHT IT!!!!!!!
    sorry about the story.

  • Mine was Metallica. I was a metalhead before PJ/Nirvana/SG/post-Facelift AIC came into my life. Smells Like Teen Spirit and Jeremy changed my life forever.

I always knew I wasn't a "true" metalhead. I liked some of the aggressive music but the silly death imagery didn't appeal to me. PJ and Nirvana were EXACTLY what I was waiting for.

    How about you?

I love punk rock but not that punk image (Mohawk, pins, spikes, leather jackets, fuck the police, fuck this and that, etc) so I never fit in with the punk community, love the message behind a lot of punk rock and what it stands for.
So yeah PJ clicks with me more, so does Nirvana and other grunge, alternative (punk inspired) bands of the late 80's and 90's.
So my favourite were Ramones, this was during my teen/young adult years.
Loved it very aggressive back then, as all teens do.
Now I've chilled out and like my thought provoking music, that of the grunge era.

I can't really give you a reasonable answer. I mean, I just... don't listen to them anymore. Maybe because I used to listen to them a lot, maybe too much, and now, I don't really feel the need to do so.
  • Echo and the Bunnymen. Saw them last year and they are still great. :)
  • The Doors.
  • Metallica, Dio, Dokken, Maiden, Faith No More!
  • The Doors seems to be a recurring band throughout this thread. Interesting.

PJ Harvey's been my #1 since I 1st came across her in about 1994. I'd have to say Pearl Jam (also PJ hmmmm... ;->) are #1 now since I rediscovered them last year & went to the concert in November.
