Happy Birthday Yield

Yield was released on February 3, 1998, which was also my 16th birthday. Not wasting any time that day, I went directly to Newbury Comics after getting out of school, where my friend and I bought our copies with much anticipation. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but that first listen blew my mind away. Listening to it LOUD was fantastic. I was amazed at how the band seemed reborn after the ups and downs they had faced together the past few years. My friend unfortunately passed away a few years later but every year now on this day I spin Yield, crack open a few and get nostalgic about growing up, growing older and letting Pearl Jam provide the soundtrack to my life, for better or worse. Pearl Jam is much more than 5 guys playing music. It sums up in many ways who I am as a person, where I've come from and where I need to be going. Yield, for me, is at the heart of this idea.

I am just curious if anyone else has a story or would just like to offer up a witty comment about what this monumental and breathtaking album means to them. Let's hear it.

But first let's raise a glass today to Yield. 12 years old. They grow up so fast.

I remember having the radio station on 24/7 that was supposed to be playing the new PJ single 'Given To Fly'. I gave up and went to the store for a Pepsi, luckily the store had that same radio on and before I knew it the DJ says "And here's the latest from Pearl Jam". I threw my change for my drink at the teller so I could get in the car to listen to it properly. I remember driving down the road with the windows down screaming in elation. Also, the girl I was dating was diagnosed with Cancer shortly thereafter. The album became the soundtrack for a lot of things, but Low Light in particular hit me hard during this time.
I always remember the release day for this one as well...
    Enjoy!
If I had my turntable set up I'd be spinning all night long

fanatic. Before that I was just a fan. I'll have more tomorrow on this but Yield changed my life.

  • I remember seeing the Alive video on Headbangers Ball and liked PJ from the get go. I didn't pay much attention to the band after Vitalogy. After hearing GTF on the radio during the Yield release I was stricken again. Such a great album! Been collecting boots and memorabilia ever since.

Yep, 2/3/98 is an amazing day for me and my family all because of Yield. If it weren't for Yield and if it weren't for me holding it in my hand while buying lunch at the mall, I would have never met my friend Bill who noticed it and asked me if I liked PJ. If it werent for that day, I would have never met my wife who Bill introduced me to 3 years later. If it werent for that day and for Yield, then I would have never met my wife nor had the kids and family and life I have now. What a powerful course of events and a trajectory of my life that occurred all because of a band called "Pearl Jam" and their release of an album called "Yield" on 2/3/98.

I remember rushing out of my Junior High and walking a mile through the Chicago snow toward Best Buy. I didn't care about the swirling winds or the sub-zero temperatures because my anticipation was sky high. Viva la Yield.

I went to Best Buy that day and spent my Best Buy gift card (or maybe it was a paper certificate, can't remember if gift cards were used then). Anyway, I knew I wanted to get Yield because I liked Given to Fly so much. Pearl Jam was always just another band to me up to that point. I mean, I really liked them, but they were just in my top 10 or whatever and over the years I sort of stopped paying attention to them. No Code didn't really do it for me, at the time. But I got the Yield CD figuring it would just go into the massive pile of CDs I had and just be part of the rotation.

Little did I know. I think I took an hour and half drive home from a Best Buy that was 10 minutes from my house, listening over and over. I even stopped in a parking lot to read the lyrics. You can't explain why a certain record connects with you at a certain point in life, it just does. Maybe because birthdays are a time to reflect on your life and think about growing up, and I always thought Yield was the most mature of the PJ records. So maybe that's why. It was from that point forward that PJ vaulted to the top and remains there today.

Sure, I come on here and bitch and moan about them and tour dates and whatever else like a lot of people, but nothing they or 10C does will ever make me forget that afternoon.

i truly didn't know what to expect from Yield after hearing No Code. to this day, No Code is still THE record for me. but i remember that i was out of town visiting my old girlfriends parents in Salina, KS. they all thought i was nuts for leaving to pick it up at midnight. from the opening countdown of "Brain of J", i knew that this would be a much different trip than they'd taken me on with their previous 4 records. it's an amazingly good record & seems to capture all of the different "moods" of the band. i still listen to it all the time & someday, i'll hear it on vinyl. happy bday, Yield!

...I was 6 years old. Being a "90's kid", I of course had my handy Sony Walkman Cassette Player (I wasn't old enough for CDs at age 7, per my parents). I asked my mom to record a tape of songs that were typical for a 7 year old child to listen. You know, your traditional Children's/Disney Channel singalong stuff. My mom decided that for her to stomach the perpetual play that the tape would have, she would have to include something she enjoyed, so she decided to include this new tune called "Given To Fly". When I heard it on my Walkman I was blown away. Honestly, I wasn't even blow away. I don't think it's possible to be blown away at 7. I can't put my finger on what I liked about it. It wasn't the guitars, bass, drums, vocals, or lyrics. I couldn't truly grasp music at age 7, but who can? Hearing Pearl Jam for the first time was just, for a lack of a better term, "love at first earful".

I was surprised on my 7th birthday (in 1998) to receive the Yield album. My dad wasn't too happy about it. As I opened the tri-folded album case, what fell out was even better - two tickets to see Pearl Jam at the Meadows in Hartford. The first time I SAW Pearl Jam was on September 13th, 1998. Barely able to see the stage while standing on my chair, I made out almost every song that was played, amidst the "dancing" in the aisle, which was really angry security and pepper spray. 7 years old. Now I'm here.

  • I remember it more clearly than any other album release. I went down to Schoolkids Records in Chapel Hill for my first ever midnight sale. Lots of folks in the store. The whole street was empty but inside was like a secret party. Smiles all around. I got back to my dorm room and my roommate was asleep so I sat at my desk pretty much in the dark and listened to the new album on headphones. I instantly fell for those huge, soaring sounds.... I kept the album on repeat until about 3am. I just couldn't stop. It was awesome.
