Happy Birthday Yield

i truly didn't know what to expect from Yield after hearing No Code. to this day, No Code is still THE record for me. but i remember that i was out of town visiting my old girlfriends parents in Salina, KS. they all thought i was nuts for leaving to pick it up at midnight. from the opening countdown of "Brain of J", i knew that this would be a much different trip than they'd taken me on with their previous 4 records. it's an amazingly good record & seems to capture all of the different "moods" of the band. i still listen to it all the time & someday, i'll hear it on vinyl. happy bday, Yield!I LOVE MUSIC.

...I was 6 years old. Being a "90's kid", I of course had my handy Sony Walkman Cassette Player (I wasn't old enough for CDs at age 7, per my parents). I asked my mom to record a tape of songs that were typical for a 7 year old child to listen. You know, your traditional Children's/Disney Channel singalong stuff. My mom decided that for her to stomach the perpetual play that the tape would have, she would have to include something she enjoyed, so she decided to include this new tune called "Given To Fly". When I heard it on my Walkman I was blown away. Honestly, I wasn't even blow away. I don't think it's possible to be blown away at 7. I can't put my finger on what I liked about it. It wasn't the guitars, bass, drums, vocals, or lyrics. I couldn't truly grasp music at age 7, but who can? Hearing Pearl Jam for the first time was just, for a lack of a better term, "love at first earful".
I was surprised on my 7th birthday (in 1998) to receive the Yield album. My dad wasn't too happy about it. As I opened the tri-folded album case, what fell out was even better - two tickets to see Pearl Jam at the Meadows in Hartford. The first time I SAW Pearl Jam was on September 13th, 1998. Barely able to see the stage while standing on my chair, I made out almost every song that was played, amidst the "dancing" in the aisle, which was really angry security and pepper spray. 7 years old. Now I'm here.My Pearl Jam Fan Videos

I remember it more clearly than any other album release. I went down to Schoolkids Records in Chapel Hill for my first ever midnight sale. Lots of folks in the store. The whole street was empty but inside was like a secret party. Smiles all around. I got back to my dorm room and my roommate was asleep so I sat at my desk pretty much in the dark and listened to the new album on headphones. I instantly fell for those huge, soaring sounds.... I kept the album on repeat until about 3am. I just couldn't stop. It was awesome.0

I remember that day oh so well. I was 23 at the time. On my 23rd birthday a few months prior (11/18/97), I went up to Oakland and saw PJ open for the Stones. I heard Brain of J. and DTE for the first time. I bought the cd and cassette (for my car) at Wherehouse exactly at 10:00am, and then proceeded to my dental appointment. The dentist even allowed me to wear my Walkman during the appointment.11/6/95, 11/18/97, 7/13/98, 7/14/98, 10/24/00, 10/25/00, 10/28/00, 6/2/03, 6/3/03, 6/5/03, 7/6/06, 7/7/06, 7/9/06, 7/10/06, 7/13/06, 7/15/06, 7/16/06, 7/18/06, 10/21/06, 4/10/08, 4/13/08, 9/30/09, 10/1/09, 10/6/09, 10/7/09, 10/9/090

Unfortunately I can't really recall much of the exact time I bought the CD, but I'm pretty sure it was on release day . . .
What I do remember is recording the radio premiere of it off of the radio a few days beforehand and listening to the tape ad nauseum, breaking down each song into what i liked/disliked about them . . . . getting ready for the release date.
I also remember, clearly, e-mailing with my buddies back and forth from University a few days after its release and each of us giving our two cents/reviews of the album after having listened to the CD several times over . . . then getting excited for the then upcoming Yield tour and seeing PJ on the 22nd of August in Barrie . . . 1998 was a life changing year for me in terms of my relationship with the band . . . went from casual fan to hardcore . .

I was in from the beginning
Love TEN - Hooked on VS - Dug but did not get Vitology <-was 18 at this point - Thought NoCode was horrible and never bought Yield In 1998 I bought the GTF single and hated it
fastforward till i was 24 and in wal-mart of all places I see LiveOnTwoLegs - I thought it was cool and some of the Binaural Tour Boots were dropping - So I picked it up - Wasn't GTF totally new to me now and amazing along with Evolution and MFC - even the NoCode tracks were amazing to me and I saw right away these dudes totally have left the TEN days behind them
So I went and got Yield <-- still my fav. pearl jam album to date and was blasted to the moon - next week bought NoCode and Binaural and Bootleg#1 in Portugal <-- the beginnings of my collection obsession, oh if I had only known
Yield changed me and helped me through some of the hardest times of my life - I was with my first wife for 6years and it was a dead end marriage - not having had kids made the break up alot easier - we were driving somewhere and Faithfull came on my truck cd player -
M.Y.T.H. is
Belief in the game controls that keeps us in a box of fear
We never listen
Voice inside so drowned out
Drowned you are, you are, you are a furry thing
And everything is you
Me you, you me, it's all related
What's a boy to do?
Just be darling and I will be too
Faithful to you
It all changed for me right then and there - i heard those lyrics differently then i ever had before or sense really - It's all state of mind -
Now I am happily remarried with the girl fo my
dreams and all that was years ago - but Happy Bday Yield you greasy bastardMy Pearl Jam Fan Videos

I just want to say that these stories are great...All of them...
I was in 8th grade and my story is a lot different. I grew up in rural Vermont where I had never ehard of Pearl Jam until I went to college years later. I hear your stories and have nothing but regret. I think about all the bullshit I was doing in 8th grade. All the shitty music I was listening to. If only I had known that an album like Yield existed.... It would have changed my life. But, shit happenes for a reason and my life changed in college when I first heard Ledbetter (I was high as hell), and wondered who was that band. From that day forward things havent been the same. Thanks for sharing your stories.
Peace,
Bryan0 -
Some how & i dont know how or why but i remember that day very well. Woke up to another beautiful summers day, had a hot one to get in the mood, went to CD store( that i dont remember), came home & loved it from the time i heard the false start of Brain of J! By the time All Those Yesterdays finished i wondered what all the people who were put off by No Code were listening to now but that is their loss. Great record with my favourite artwork. I was 13 when Yield came out. I believe I was just getting into Pearl Jam at this point, and my best friend came to school singing "It's evolution baby..." and that is my first memory of it. I soon after bought it. It is my absoulte favorite album by any band of all time. It is probably my most listened to album. It has my favorite song by any band of all time, Low Light, it is accompianed by an awesome video in SVT, which I watch sometimes just for fun and to cheer me up. Everything about that album is amazing, perfect, I love it so much.
Happy Birthday Yield!
Though saying all this starts to make me feel old as next year Yield will have existed for half my life (though I know many of you are older than me!) But I appreciate Yield so much. It makes me think of 7th grade. It is really when the music I listened to started down a whole new path. I can't say enough about this amazing album.words seem so out of place.

As we all know, it's pretty much impossible to quantify or qualify in mere words what your favorite band, or favorite album means to you. There's so much about the experience of connecting with words and music and having a soundtrack to your life, etc., that go far beyond what you can write in a bbs post.
But then there are some albums and some moments in your life that are forever stuck with you, and in which YOU are yourself forever stuck. For me, that album is Yield, that day is February 3, 1998. Because it was the last day of my brother's life. Someday, maybe I'll be able to articulate what this all has truly meant to my life, what effect Pearl Jam and Yield and losing a brother to cancer had on a 16-year-old high school kid. But that day is not today. Because in large part, I'm still there, and may always be: February 3, 1998.
Happy Birthday, Yield.

it's rare/to come upon/the bridge that has not
been around or been slept on.
Whatever the notion we/listen our prayers
the Man Upstairs is used/to all of this noise
I'm through with screaming
And echoes...that nobody hears
It goes...it goes...it goes...
Like echoes...nobody hears...
It goes. It goes. It goes LIKE THIS:
