As we all know, it's pretty much impossible to quantify or qualify in mere words what your favorite band, or favorite album means to you. There's so much about the experience of connecting with words and music and having a soundtrack to your life, etc., that go far beyond what you can write in a bbs post.

But then there are some albums and some moments in your life that are forever stuck with you, and in which YOU are yourself forever stuck. For me, that album is Yield, that day is February 3, 2008. Because it was the last day of my brother's life. Someday, maybe I'll be able to articulate what this all has truly meant to my life, what effect Pearl Jam and Yield and losing a brother to cancer had on a 16-year-old high school kid. But that day is not today. Because in large part, I'm still there, and may always be: February 3, 2008.

    Happy Birthday, Yield.

Yield was released on February 3, 1998, which was also my 16th birthday. Not wasting any time that day, I went directly to Newbury Comics after getting out of school, where my friend and I bought our copies with much anticipation. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but that first listen blew my mind away. Listening to it LOUD was fantastic. I was amazed at how the band seemed reborn after the ups and downs they had faced together the past few years. My friend unfortunately passed away a few years later but every year now on this day I spin Yield, crack open a few and get nostalgic about growing up, growing older and letting Pearl Jam provide the soundtrack to my life, for better or worse. Pearl Jam is much more than 5 guys playing music. It sums up in many ways who I am as a person, where I've come from and where I need to be going. Yield, for me, is at the heart of this idea.

I am just curious if anyone else has a story or would just like to offer up a witty comment about what this monumental and breathtaking album means to them. Let's hear it.

But first let's raise a glass today to Yield. 12 years old. They grow up so fast.

  • There are so many amazing stories I've been reading here. We all have different stories about where we were and how we were feeling. It's these types of things that make it all worth it on the board. Thanks again to everyone. Let's hear some more.

As I sit here and listen to Yield, I am still amazed at how incredibly awesome it is. There really isn't a weak song on the album, though I am not too fond of Pilate. 11/6/08

1,2,3,4.......1,2,3,4 ........Into Brain of J, one of the best leads to any album. I just LOVE the guitar riff in the song so much I was lucky enough to hear it for the first time in San Diego this past October. So cool live, even thought there was a little guitar slip up after the first verse. oops.

Faithfull is my most underrated song on the album, it just oozes awesomeness. I absolutely love everything about it. Heard it live as well and Ed's singing is so powerfull on it.

For some reason when I first started to listen to the album I never really listened to No Way. What a mistake the guitar riffs are thick and awesome and I can't get enough of it! Am so glad they re-introduced it into their set. Way up there on songs I gotta hear!

Given to Fly is what really made me a fan of Pearl Jam. The first time I heard i loved it so much. It has always been my favorite song of theirs. Hearing it live is awesome and listening to it at the beach while the waves crash the against the shore is also AWESOME!

Wishlist is a song I know a lot of people aren't a big on and I do enjoy it, but not a favorite on the album.

Pilate is another song I just can take or leave, I heard it live Philly which was cool, but I just can't get into it. Maybe it will change one day.

I love when PJ just cuts loose and rocks. Do the Evolution is such a cool song, But it a song that MUST be experienced live, wow it just blows you away.

Red Dot: similar sound to hummus which is a cool little short Irons song, not too shabby.

MFC must be heard while driving, it just has the driving feel to it. So cool. Too bad it doesn't get played live very often.

Low Light is one of PJ's best "ballads". It just kept growing on me from the first time I heard it until now. Hearing it live was so cool too. I have heard most of the songs from Yield, but there is still one left that I desperately want to hear. And I missed one of its best performances ever by one day.

That would be In Hiding. It has exploded into one of my all-time favorite songs. Just great writing both lyrically and musically. The chorus is so simple. They need to put this song into regular rotation. It is that good. When I first heard the version from the Spectrum on October 30, I couldn't believe how awesome it sounded and then to hear Eddie say it was the best he had ever heard it sung. I was like shoot I just missed it!!! I was lucky enough to make the Halloween show, but I will always regret not being able to make the previous night's show. Here are two links to great videos of this song from that night:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXE4-pgrUjg (Full Version)

Wow, what a goosebump giving rendition, phew.

Push Me, Pull is one of the most random thing I have ever heard, but it is a cool little song.

All those Yesterdays is such a cool builder. I love Eddie's intro just his voice and the guitar work is so friggin' cool! I have always been a fan, but fell in love with it when I heard it live. So awesome. Here is the video from the LA show back in October: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESwFg6mLAYU

    Man I love it.

One more random "song" from the album is the hidden track. I love it, I really do. There really aren't any words, but the music and the claps just make me happy to listen to it. It is hard to describe!

Wow, I still can't believe I first bought and listened to the album over ten years after its release date. I feel like I have listened to it forever. Not sure if I would have liked it in high school to be honest when it first was released. Happy Birthday to one of the most beautiful albums ever recorded. It's birthday for me will always be November 6, 2008.

  • I had just moved out to California in January of 1998. I remember picking up Yield on my way home from work, popping it in the cd player, and cracking an ice cold Pacifico. Sat on the couch and could not stop smiling as I listened. About halfway through I hit repeat on the cd reomte... and the Pacificos.

Happy B-day Fenway Faithful, Yield and whomever ever else's b-day it is! I was listening to the album earlier today (didn't even know it came out on this date).

I'm sure this was question was answered many times. But in the Given To Fly. What is that "noise" at the 2:45 mark of the song right after Ed says Sometimes? Sounds like a high pitch noise.

Not really a bad song on the album. :D

...Was one of the most exciting days of my life (in regards to music anyway).
