How does being over 40 make you old? WTF? Why are some people so surprised that we still like rock music? Gotta vent here, I've been hearing this crap since I turned 30. I don't believe personalities change as soon as a person reaches a certain age. If you take care of yourself you will not get old.
Wait till you hit 50. People act like its fuckin amazing that I still love to go to shows.

My wife and I went to a small club to see a Jessica Lea Mayfield live. She is young. But during her set another fan came up and asked if we were Jessica's parents? WTF.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
slide in sideways, BBQ sandwich in one hand, cold beer in the other,
body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "Woo Hoo what a
    ride"!

Heh. I have had a sort of similar experience.

I am a fan of a band (Avenged Sevenfold) that a lot of teens like. And one of those teens is my closest girlfriend's 14 year old son.

The first time I engaged him in conversation about A7X, he looked at me really oddly, like he could not believe what he was hearing. And the next day, my girlfriend told me that later that night, he told her he 'couldn't understand' how I could like that band.

But why not? They are extremely talented. I couldn't care less that they are all in their late 20's/early 30's.

In truth, I think my friends' son was trying to decide if it would still be 'cool' to like A7X if one of his mom's friends liked them too.

I teach high school and we were learning about the Jazz Age and started talking about the types of music we all listen to and I certainly won over some of the boys when I told them I was a huge Metallica fan. Was kinda surprised at how hard they work in class now :D
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

Now see, that's really cool! Anything to motivate kids is a good thing! And music is a huge opening, if, like you, the adult genuinely does like the music and can discuss intelligently, etc.

And I do think that I won a little street cred with my girlfriend's son when I could talk intelligently about A7X, their albums, their videos, the death of The Rev, etc. Although at the same time, I'm pretty positive that he has no idea what to make of me: "Is she a cool adult? Or is A7X not as cool as I thought?" I can see it on the kid's face - that's what he's mulling over.

But hey....gotta keep 'em guessing and just a wee bit off-kilter! And my girlfriend (who is a teacher too, btw) thinks it's hilarious - apparently, this has really fucked with the kid's head a bit...and she is very amused by this.

I say, keep those Metallica tunes crankin! :P

    Will be 44 in July!

My 15 year old thinks Metallica is the end all be all of metal. I have had to let him know that is not the case... Introduced him to Iron Maiden! My wife and I have also gotten him into Pearl Jam.

    Seriously!! :(

I see the "over 40" and "under 30" but no "30-something" club which I'm sure a LOT of us are in. I know I am, my husband is in the "over 40" club....just turned 40 in January...but he's old ;)

Sidenote to the OP I just have to comment that "Pumpkinhead" was my son's name for his very first teddybear when he was a baby. We still have it now 17 years later and everytime a see one of your posts I picture him. So in my head you're a cute little green teddy bear. :D:lol:

41, been listening since college, and trying to get my kids into PJ. They always give me a hard time and say they don't like the music. Lately though, in the rear view mirror, I've seen the little one bobbing her head and the older one mouthing the words. It's just a matter of time...

same here...my son plays electric guitar, has a little band going, favorite band is Blink 182, we argue constantly about Blink vs Pearl Jam, of course, there is no comparison in my eyes, but I do catch him sometimes singing a song or two. My 9 year old daughter on the other hand, knows all the words to most of Pearl Jam and she is going to the concert with me when they come to Philly, and not the festival.

I've followed the band from the beginning, and now my teenage daughter's borrowing my PJ cds to load on her iPod--where does the time go?!
To echo what some of the others have already said...I think the music keeps you young. I'm in the best shape of my life, still have the craziest sense of humor, and appreciate new life experiences much more than I ever have. Age is a state of mind.
