Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis
I hate this time of the year. People are more fake and false. It shouldn't take some holiday or season for people to act like good, moral, nice people who care...this is something people should do all the time. It doesn't take a holiday to recognize the love of your family or friends or appreciate what you have in life. By doing so, as a whole, it shows how truly shallow and misguided people actually are in our society. People celebrate this holiday season, yet don't follow the codes of the religion, instead they've merely installed traditions to follow which relate to it - yes things we've made up... trees, presents, santa, spirit, etc.. it's all bogus nonsense we've made up for commercial gain or some insignificant meaning which has zero to do with the actual practice of religious code or text.
If Christmas and the consumerism around it bother you so much, then don't participate.
The commercialism of it is a joke, but we all know that... no tv commercial is making me feel guilty for not buying my wife a car or diamond earings, I chuckle at the commercials and move on.
And while "it doesn't take a holiday to recognize the love of your family or friends or appreciate what you have in life" is absolutely true, but with people living in different cities and everyone's work/life schedules the holiday does give us a chance to get together and enjoy spending time as a family. If in your opinion spending time with our families and giving a nice gift or two make us "truly shallow and misguided", then I don't know what to tell you.
It's this type of attitude that is truly missing my point (in bold). Who exactly said that consumerism and Christmas go hand in hand? What happened to the home made gift? The baked gift? The gift that didn't need to be purchased in order to symbolize how we feel about one another? There's a problem with society when we stop being "humans" and are become strictly catagorized as "consumers". That's not what Christmas is about.
i don't think most of the people are saying they hate christmas but rather they hate what christmas has become
Basically, that's my point. We are no longer considered "humans" in society's opinion, we're only "consumers". Born to consume. Born to shop until we drop on Black Friday and the month of December (and the rest of the year) in search of that perfectly plastic thing that we think someone may want. Shop until we drop, gotta get the latest toy to fulfill my wants, my kid's wants, my family's wants.
In the end, no one's ever satisfied, they just want more. Look at most kids on Christmas morning and they'll say after opening their last gift..."Is that it?"

It doesn't go hand in hand for a lot of people, that's my point... only those who let it. That is where I get annoyed by people complaining about the commercialism and consumerism. If you want to keep that away from Christmas, celebrate the holiday without all that crap, then you are free to do that.
Nothing happened to the baked gift of home made gift... plenty of people (my wife and I included) do that... others go all out and buy expensive things for their families because they can and want to... others are idiots and buy a bunch of crap because they feel like they have to.
Christmas is different for everyone and every family, make it what you like and ignore the other bullshit.

i'm part of a birthday group of friends where when it's someone's bday - we'll all pool our money to get one thing they really want ... for me - they make a donation to a charity on my behalf ... it's the best gift i can ever get ...
Love this!
Many people have good ways of not falling for the "buy, buy, buy your Christmas happiness". Awesome!
my grandma used to give us a donation to the charity of our choice instead of an actual gift. it was always the best present i got at christmas.
Not only do I love this, I've tried this with my siblings. Guess where the gift certificates ended up? The trash. We have all acknowledged that we're adults and no longer need to give each other gifts. Being together for good food and booze is enough. As long as the kids get a little something.
i don't think most of the people are saying they hate christmas but rather they hate what christmas has become

LOTS of kids, and I mean the majority, are spoiled rotten.
I completely agree with you and albeit the homemade and nice aspect of the holiday is around, unfortunately it is not the mainstream or generic and certainly far from it.
Also, call me whatever name you please, but I don't care about Christmas or other religious holidays. If people want to celebrate them, so be it, but it doesn't mean everyone has to hear about it or have it shoved down their throats ad nasuem via music, decorations, tv ads or the other million ways it is. From an outsiders perspective, it'd be no different from an ordinary person be forced to listen to polka music and see groundhoggs everywhere for 1 month of the year straight. But because some our "outsiders" and not in the "norm", we're considered the odd-balls... pretty funny how life works eh?

so what's your solution? (if you gave one already, i must have missed it)
if everyone were to ignore the commercialization of the holiday's, don't you think the advertising and marketing of the season would change? ultimately, advertisers and marketers are mirroring what society wants
and for clarification, i'm not disputing your initial post...the over commercialization at this time of year is obnoxious...but change comes in waves and until people start making those waves nothing will happen
I know this was said in a previous post but this time of year is to spend some time with family and friends, along with celebrating the end of another year. But the whole xmas music, lights, decarations, religion, trees, parades, etc, are not needed at all. So I will do the same I have done for the last couple of years get up get drunk, eat, and spend time with family and friends. I dont need anything more than that.

As for me this Christmas thing is far too overrated and commercialized. I once worked for a large corporation years ago and I can recall getting my department ready for Christmas by the end of August. I thought that was crazy but that's the beast of corporate business, it's pushed unto the consumers to make that almighty dollar. Nothing wrong with making profits I just think businesses tend to go too far just to make sales.
As for Christmas I like to ask specifically one gift only what my daughter would like. Being the only child I've seen how too many things comes her way and many just wasted. I feel it's more important to be together as a family enjoying the holidays in each other's company.
Now next year for the first time it's going to different. There will no gifts given by me, everyone is being warned from this year. I would like to see everyone else to follow, I can't make them but I'd like to see it. Something can be made for someone else but nothing bought anew. For me I'm going to volunteer my time for the homeless or any other charity next year and I want my daughter right there by my side.
For once or twice I'd like for the children focus the holidays on doing something for others who do not have or can buy the things we take for granted. Many times when you give of yourself it can come back to you twofold, I think there's much more gratification in that act alone.

Christmas time, or "the holiday season" if you prefer gentler, more politically correct words in your ears, carries with it a frantic all-out blitz of seasonal advertising. As the end of the year approaches, consumers are reminded constantly to go ahead and spend any cash we may have managed to save during the year. The companies desperate for our dollars are merciless in their attack. Any reason their research indicates might possibly entice a consumer to purchase a product becomes a lofty principle woven between alluring images. Shopping rises to foremost concern in the national agenda.
In our daily lives within this capitalist culture, we are exposed to advertisements at such a constant rate that I don't think I would even want to know a statistical estimate. In fact, I'm sure my brain has a stat stored away that it overheard somewhere, but did not allow access to my consciousness in a vain attempt to protect me from pain. Despite the obvious inundation of manipulative messages, how often do people actually take the time to contemplate what they are absorbing? Most are too afraid to consider the situation seriously.
A closer look at some of the ludicrous pitches is instantly offensive to anyone with even a slight sensitivity. The most shockingly offensive holiday commercials for me are those that casually encourage people to purchase absurdly luxurious items for their loved ones this holiday season.
Lexus, in a series of commercials depicting some alternate universe of infinite wealth and leisure, sets the standard for upper crust gift giving. We are shown just how happy and proud our husband or father will be when he sees his gigantic new SUV with the leather interior and CD player sitting in the driveway wrapped in a red bow. Who buys someone a car for Christmas? Especially a luxury car! Is Lexus targeting the elusive professional athlete demographic, or just trying to make the rest of us feel bad about ourselves? Even Shaq only bought each of his teammates a Rolex after winning the NBA title. He didn't give out a fleet of giant luxury vehicles to show his thanks.
Meanwhile, jewelry cartels and department stores conspire to counsel men that no gift pleases a wife more than a diamond necklace, ring, bracelet, or at least earrings. Grateful wives clad in silky lingerie imply exactly what gift men should expect in return for their expenditure. The price is not quite as lavish as the tag on a Yuletide Lex, but we're still talking about dropping five grand on a single gift. Of course, the wives see the ads too, so the gift certainly would produce some level of perceived happiness as promised. Diamonds are pretty and expensive; it can't be denied.
These advertisements are not spoon-feeding us complete lies, but they are clearly intended to manipulate. Every day, we sit prone for hours before television screens and passively absorb images and words intended to convince us that the purchase of certain products will satisfy something inside us, or in some way improve our lives. It might be different if these assertions were founded in some sort of rational thought. Personally, I find it difficult to justify how spending far too much money on an overpriced, unpractical vehicle or fashion accessory could provide any valid or spiritually sound sense of happiness.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the unselfish pleasure experienced by witnessing the appreciative excitement a well-chosen gift produces in its recipient. And I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with getting giddy when someone gives you a great gift either. As long as the reaction is true, there is no problem. The difficulty arises in determining for one's self exactly which reactions are in fact true reactions. We must learn to step back and question the nature of our desires in order to find out whether they originated from an ad we saw fifty times this week, or if they arose from honest, spontaneous emotion. Sifting through the overabundance of external information and influence to discover our true selves is the tricky part.
I like how you wrote this Jeanwah.
Yesterday I was thinking about JUST those two items you mentioned above: The Lexus and the jewelry gift. We went out yesterday and I saw a car with a red bow on it in the mall and we looked at the price tag. It was $47,000. My husband told the kids that I'd be mad at him if he bought a car like that for me as a gift. (And it's true!)
I saw a sign "gifts as low as $500" on the side of the Jared store and thought..."That's supposed to entice buyers to come in?!"
i loved chistmas when i was growing up. especially loved the family time. was so great to just all be together and hang out for the day. i don't feel the same about christmas now, but i would never begrudge or lecture those that are right into it. i think we just change as we get older and some of the 'magic' is lost once you realize santa isn't real. i have 2 much younger cousins, and after i grew up, it was awesome to have them around as well and watch the excitement on their faces.
i don't need 'things'. my parents are sponsoring two children for me for 12 months, instead of buying me a present, and i'll take over after the year is up. i just want to spend time with people i love.

I'm like that doing something for somebody else. I don't need a thing just the company of those whom I love that's it, the things I need I'll get them myself or just do without. My sister for years wants to get me a flat screen tv, I tell her no I like my big belly tv with the wavy lines. When it blows up I'll THINK about getting a new one, I don't watch too much tv anyway.
Somebody will ask me what do I want for Christmas? I'll tell em, "leave me alone or come over and rub my feet."
Peace

:? I wasn't going to call you a name, for starters. I agree, the music, lights, decorations and Santa Claus are everywhere. I was reading somewhere where you typically could go down to the horse track or OTB this time of year and it would be completely neutral; with no reminders of the upcoming holiday. But even places like these are decorating now.
I still bake every Christmas and give the cookies out as gifts, as do many people. But as far as being an outsider or odd ball? People who want to fit in purposely will do anything to blend in. If we're true to ourselves, we wouldn't really care.
so what's your solution? (if you gave one already, i must have missed it)
if everyone were to ignore the commercialization of the holiday's, don't you think the advertising and marketing of the season would change? ultimately, advertisers and marketers are mirroring what society wants

I don't really have one other than not buying into what advertising wants, and spread that kind of awareness around. Pretty much what I'm trying to do here. Everyone won't ignore the commercialization, that's what is sad. Too many care about their toys more than to simply be happy just being around family and friends for Christmas.

LOVE your post, g under p. Awesome. I would love to do a "no gift" Christmas, I may have to start early if I want it to work. Like you're doing.

I admit, I prefer less 'stuff' in my life. But I crave more experiences, more time, more togetherness and helping others where I can. The gift your parents are giving you is truly a gift not just to you, but to someone else. Awesome.

unfortunately people like that probably won't ever change...best you or anyone can do is lead by example and hope others follow your lead
btw, i just saw a commercial for tj maxx i believe...the first line was "i love shopping at christmas"
If I was a paranoid person I'd say that the messages in advertisements are slowing driving people insane by training them to believe all these lies about what's important. :? :geek:

Yet you never really add anything to the topic. You just like to come on here and stick it to people.
Well, here's your chance. What's your story? What does Christmas mean to you.
Funny...
I had the same conversation about you today.
How you never seem to add anything or have anything nice to say.......
Oh well....
And I am not here to stick it to anybody...
I just dont understand how anyone can just say "I hate Christmas" I dont get it, and never will.....
Oh well..
What does Christmas mean to me??
The same thing every year...
A chance to get together with my family, feast, exchange gifts, spend some time with my parents. Watch my nieces and nephews open their gifts. Get together with my cousin John and his wife Debby, who I dont see enough of, and spend some time catching up. Its a time where myself and loved ones can gather together, and just forget about are busy, hectic, everyday nonsense that we all go through, and just spend a day or two enjoying each others company and sharing stories and laughs. Its a time to call old friends and see how life is treating them and their loved ones.
I fucking love Christmas......

you don't have to understand, but you could at least be respectful. for one, i have never spoken to, or even know who jeanwah is, but i enjoy some of her posts and the contribution she makes here, and i can assure you she adds a whole lot more than just negativity and hatred.

i understand that. i just think it's really uncool to come back to the thread and state what other people say about a certain individual. that sort of thing should be left for a PM. it's not cool at all.

Well, here's your chance. What's your story? What does Christmas mean to you.

I do love that film, scb.

Love this!
Many people have good ways of not falling for the "buy, buy, buy your Christmas happiness". Awesome!
Not only do I love this, I've tried this with my siblings. Guess where the gift certificates ended up? The trash. We have all acknowledged that we're adults and no longer need to give each other gifts. Being together for good food and booze is enough. As long as the kids get a little something.
If that's what you see, then you are hanging around with some screwed up kids.

LOTS of kids, and I mean the majority, are spoiled rotten.

I saw a sign "gifts as low as $500" on the side of the Jared store and thought..."That's supposed to entice buyers to come in?!"
i don't need 'things'. my parents are sponsoring two children for me for 12 months, instead of buying me a present, and i'll take over after the year is up. i just want to spend time with people i love.
Peace

I still bake every Christmas and give the cookies out as gifts, as do many people. But as far as being an outsider or odd ball? People who want to fit in purposely will do anything to blend in. If we're true to ourselves, we wouldn't really care.
I didn't completely write it! I really identify with it though.
unfortunately people like that probably won't ever change...best you or anyone can do is lead by example and hope others follow your lead
btw, i just saw a commercial for tj maxx i believe...the first line was "i love shopping at christmas"
well that's exactly what they what...advertisers wants everyone to associate christmas with shopping...and so far, they've succeeded very well
they tell you what you want and what you need and until that moment you didnt even realise your life was incomplete without their piece of gadgetry or useless crap.
money cant buy what it is i want so just rest your head on that sacrificial altar while rome burns.
GIMME GIMME GIMME

Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
