Hecklers at shows (Santa Cruz last night)

edited April 2008 in The Porch
hecklers and people that like the sound of their own voices, suck.

i happened to be sitting 4 seats away from the dumb ass yelling “fuck vancouver” (among other things) at the santa cruz show last night – so i guess this is a bit of a rant. i was so upset... and i felt like i paid a lot of money (as everyone else did) to see the show, and i missed most of ed's stories because this guy wouldn't stop talking and yelling. there were the murmurs of “shh” and “geez, shut up” - but no one directly told him to be quiet. i guess it was worse, too, since the venue was so small and intimate.

how should hecklers be dealt with? besides being punched in the face (okay, i'm not really that hostile, just still vexed by it). i felt that telling him to shut it might only make him yell louder and more often...

i hope this doesn't become the case for the upcoming shows.

from what I have learned by reading this board lately is that many people see "going to tell security" is being a narc and uncool, I guess that only applies to smoking though?
There's Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson......and then everybody else.

tell him to shut up. if he doesn't or gets louder, get him tossed out.

A friend of mine is a semi-well knwon singer/songwriter and a lot of times he ends up opening shows for bigger, louder bands and douchebags heckle him a lot.

I remember once, he stopped mid-song and addressed a heckler. He said "I know not all of these people paid to come hear me, but they certainly didn't pay to hear you." the whole crowd cheered and the dude was pretty embarrassed.

    good times.

I think you should have told him to be quiet.

douchebag is the right word! kudos to your friend, it's so true...

i'm glad ed didn't address it, tho i'm sure he heard it. he did however, ask for someone's cell phone that was ringing - and the guy didn't even give it to him! he got boo'd. :)

beer and silence don't mix well with some at these shows.....

i've told good friends, more than once, to shut up during a show...and a stranger, would get no different treatment

having said that, it's a concert, man :)

honestly, it's been my experience that those people are at every show...sucks, but it is what it is. If security won't do anything, or the people are that person, then it'll always continue. worse are those that chat during the entire show, like it's some freakin sorority social (not meant to say it's all women doing this).
"Music, for me, was fucking heroin." eV (nothing Ed has said is more true for me personally than this quote)

Um, it's a concert. I think everyone needs to have another beer. Particularly at the show.

yeah, that's true. i guess i've just been lucky enough not to have one of them near me at all the past shows i've been to - it had to happen at some point :)

Uncool to narc on "smokers?" Smokers of what? Cause it's hard to join the smokers to smoke uh, well, you know! Sure sure, narc on the tobacco! Blech!

I was in the middle of the ORCH and the heckling wasn't too bad, really. The drunk dude who kept yelling "145!" I'm hopin that's what he paid for a single ticket, not his pair? Annoying.

Ed made a couple good cracks in response to a few folks -- so that's kinda fun. "Let's Party!" And Ed says, "I thought that's what the f*** we're doing?!?!" Huge cheers...

I had cellphones ringin around me though -- so it was fun to see Ed acknowledge that, "Hi, it's me, Ed. Wanna hear a depressing song."

So the hecklin in mid-ORCH wasn't soo bad -- no what was lame was seat-squatters causin ushers to sort it all out 2nd-3rd song. RAGE!

tell them to shut up with authority. dont be afraid. when it comes down to it, everyone else will back you up and they will get tossed. it sucks that this is overshadowing the greatness of these shows.

thats right! most of these people think they are being "funny" but when they are told off they quickly shut up..it worked for George Costanza

What the hell are people coming to the show during the 2nd or 3rd song. Liam Finn was awesome and walking the cow and around the bend are some of the highlights.

yes, Ed did handle the comment well. but if i was near that guy i would've punched him in the back of the head. Ed was trying to set a quiet/serious mood to go in Arc...and just as Ed is ready, that guy yells that shit.

i wish i didn't let things like that interfere with my enjoying the show, but they do.

i know physical action is generally not the way to deal with situations but the guy was obviously being a complete asshole so I think beating the shit out of him would not have been out of line.
