echoing my comment in the other thread, Ed struggled tonight big time. The worst I've ever seen him as far as losing the voice goes. He did what not many others would do - he tried his best when he just didnt feel up to it. I just hope he recovers and i have no problem with the shorter set list and left out songs tonight. Anyone else in his condition wouldnt even want to get out of bed but he gave everything he had and more. He gave one last push in RITFW and really let lose, I bet the voice was completely gone after that.

He was angry with himself and you could tell he didnt want to let the crowd down.

    Get better Ed.

  • Onto Sydney and met by a 40 degree C' day!!......Again my sons join me but this time I'm in the seats....1st time for this Aussie tour.

It was incredible to see the crowd build from this vantage point....In Perth Adelaide and Melbourne I was in the first block on the floor....From the stands I saw the entire floor fill and felt the power of a completely commited crowd.

In fact if i think back to '06 this is one of the main differences. This time people in the stands all were up and dancing from the start. All age brackets into it early and didn't let up. It was fun to have some room to let go and bounce when i felt like it.

I have deliberately left out Ben and Liam previously but tonight I must mention Ben's version of INXS's "Never tear us apart" during his set. Completely unexpected and a special treat that captured the Sydney crowds attention. Brilliant.

    Apart from being able to dance with conviction my highlights for Sydney were;

    Hail Hail (finally)
DISSIDENT (dedicated to the TC fan who keeps getting front and centre each show - respect -what DID you request?? and sorry i can't remember your name :)
    Untitled - ahhhh and MFC
    GARDEN
    WHIPPING (again :)----Dance dance dance......
    and then ..........

In part because Eddie had a sore throat they (Stone) played Mankind........What I liked about this was Stone bothering to thank Eddie who turns up every time and thanks everyone else......HERE HERE !!!...

SOLAT and PORCH again but this time dancing my ass off was truely magic.

Sadly the last encore was brief...I'm sure because of Eddie's illness.....I sensed he was apologetic and didn't want to stop but was left with no choice. At the end actually clutching his throat as if to say I can't sing anymore :(

We were graced with Crazy Mary for the first time this tour before a prolonged crowd walk by Eddie signalled a premature goodbye during RITFW.

I think the Sydney crwod was awesome with mexican waves at the beginnng. Though the setlist was the shortest yet this was a great highlight show for me......

Thanks again PJ and see you all in a few days for the final bash on my adventure in Brisbane :)

WOW...what you wrote above sounds so much like his situation at Outside Lands. We were amazed by how hard he tried to give a kick ass show. And they did...

  • only for pearl jam would a 28 song setlist be considered "short." ;)
sorry to read that ed is feeling ill, and sorry for the fans....i'm sure for all hoped for more, ed probably more than anyone. i am certain he and all gave EVERYthing they could for the crowds, so i hope all had a great time no matter what, and that ed is on the mend soon!

and WOW...it's joni's birthday too? AND they sang happy birthday to her?! :o  :o
today is my birthday as well, and i initially planned on heading to sydney for the show - obviously changed my mind - but woweeeeee for her! tis like a dream!

have to say, for me, definite right decision staying put. and now reading about the heat  and ed being ill :( ....i'm 'ok' with my choice, tho you bet...of course i'd still have liked to have been there.

The Sydney shirt was the Swans and the poster was apparently the artwork from the red surfer shirt. Does anyone have any images of these? Thanks to Zenith for picking me up a t-shirt! :D

Feel better Ed and congrats to Joni on another awesome PJ experience. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Hey now, it's not a competition. Any PJ show is a gift and an amazing experience ;)

  • Eddie did give it his best and you could feel his frustration - got only more respect for him. It was a bloody ruthless day in terms of the heat - 44 degrees - tough for a healthy fan standing in the crowd - can't imagine how got though as much as he did - visibly sick. He still kicked ass and gave us a 2 + hour show in stadium as hot as an oven.

Loved the show - SOLOT, Garden, Crazy Mary Dissident, Hail Hail... all highlights. Sydney crowd was great too - they were into it.
  • any video of Eddie covering Never Tears Us Apart and Underpressure?
  • I have no complaints about the setlist! Thought it was an amazing setlist!

Unthought Known was made to be played live!

I thought the crowd was better than Melbourne due to the fact that it was a rectangular field and much tighter!

Garden was amazing, Crazy Mary was unbelievable, I could go on and on!

Melbourne and Sydney ticked off, Auckland and Christchurch next!

    Have fun in Brissie everyone!

I thought the setlist was awesome. I actually enjoy being able to sing along while others don't know the song.

Big thumb up to Mike McCready who jammed out like his life depended on it last night. I love that shit!

For a guy that was as sick as Eddie I don't know how he pulled it off. He even had to lie flat out on the deck way to the side during Crazy Mary just to keep going. Yeah a short set list but a good one none the less. It was nice to finally see a show thats not just all hits.

Mankind, Untitled, Dissident, Garden, Unthought Known, Red Mosquito, Hail Hail, MFC, Wow! Heaps of songs I had not heard live so I am a happy camper.

Stone gave a really great shout out to Ed then nailed mankind!

Ed could not have been more apologetic, no need! Anyone else would have given up after the first song Why Go.

Even got to shake the mans hand (hope I dont get sick).

Mike was going crazy, I dont know how many laps he did of the stage but he must of felt like he ran a marathon afterwards. He was really showing off tonight and bringing the energy Ed lacked.

Also have to say the security in my area were brilliant and everyone else took good care of each other too. All up certainly a different Pearl Jam experience for me but I still came away with some of the best Highlights from any of the shows I have attended.
Im not supersticious, Im just a littlesticious.

As Ed came on before the second encore, he said "He wanted to thank everyone in this giant oval for bearing with him, and thanks for coming out and seeing all these great bands. Next time he would be prepared to lip synch or knock 20 bucks off the price next time."

He was joking about some people Americans/Canadians with Australian accents and was wondering if he moved here he'd end up talking the same.

He mentioned how he lived in Bondi for 5 weeks. And when people came up and said whats your name he says "Eddie Vedder" in a kiwi accent.

Eddie also made references to Australia's convict past and how he gets along with descendants of thieves and crooks.

I filmed all of that talk...it was funny as I will try to upload the videos progressively when I get home to Brisvegas this afternoon. I filmed 20 songs, including Ben Harper Never Tear Us Apart.

Bring On Brisvegas & yes I wish Eddie a speadily recovery, what a gutsy man!!

Yes, I am saying I do not like the poster.

Far as the concert/set list goes, any PJ concert is a good one IMO and wish I had been there!
