I'm not the biggest Dead fan around (although I do have and love American Beauty and Working Man's Dead), but I sure do like the artwork on the Dead's album covers.  These ^^^ are very cool!
It's the art and it's the brand.  I mean, is there anything in music more recognizable than the Dead's skull (SYF)?  Or the dancing bears?  They were really great about that.

I know you were in the Bay area in this time.  Did you ever get a chance to see them in the early days, like in the streets or at Winterland, etc?

I think you see the GD skull on so many more things in every day life. Shirts, stickers, hats, much more Dead than Zep.
I had to google their logo. Couldn't have told you. I recognize it, for sure, but I see way more band logos than that around.
That’s crazy talk. But in looking at Setlist, there are only 3 pages of tours in Canada, maybe 20 shows. Maybe it’s an American thing.
I also literally don't know a single person who listens to them. haha
In the States, Dead people are everywhere still. There’s a reason they are doing another long run at the Sphere, 60 years after forming.
oh absolutely, I'm not at all claiming they aren't still a force. I just think outside of the US they are kinda like the Tragically Hip outside of Canada.
    Probably a good analogy.

That’s surprising to read. The Hip are basically unknown in the states and the dead are well known worldwide. Maybe not sold  out thirty residency shows popular but still well known.

and too bad about that money losing planetarium toy in Vegas that Dolans silver spoon kid built in Vegas. Even with a variation of the dead filling it a bunch last year, it still loses hundreds of millions of dollars and Dolan expects it to be subsidized by non sports fans paying for knicks games on cable . Strip it down and ship it to Abu Dhabi.
Is it losing money? Tell me more please.

I have seen the Dead and U2. And I have tickets to the Eagles next month ABs 3 more Dead shows in May. I’m in Vegas a fair amount for work so it’s easy for me to go and I have clients that love music like me. So I love it there, it’s next level. It could be the future of concerts but not if it loses money.

Dead Set has been in my cd player for a least 12 months. I did grow up on the dead though. So I could see if you're unfamiliar it could be a borefest.

According to their financials “MSG Entertainment” lost $125M last quarter.

Looks like They are losing over $400M+ per year. They’d need to fill the place 150-200 additional shows per year (on top of all the D and C shows last year), to make that up. D and C is a unique concept in the concert biz, how many others are there in the future that can guarantee a run of 30+ sold out shows?

Eventually they’ll make some money back franchising the concept to other locales, that’s why Knick fans are stuck looking at Abu Dhabi on the jerseys and court, which is the next one being built. That’s probably a good indication of its economic viability. A country using it as a loss leader to get more tourism, excitement and visibility.

Meanwhile Dolan is sticking it to Knick fans fighting with his former cable company (where their family fortune originated before it was sold to a European “sucker”). Based on NYs history with the Dolan family, im guessing we have more here who hate this investment. That glorious LCD ball is filled with our cable dollars (an oversimplification and joke!)

Not sure how many artists will be able to convince fans to schedule Vegas vacations around their residencies. most younger artists that can fill an arena need to tour to build up their fan base and customer loyalty. Forcing fans to buy airfare and hotels? “Come to us, we can’t be bothered coming to you” is no way to win over fans.

It’s great that you can leverage a business trip and catch some great shows, but drawing in millions of fans who need to drop more than a thousand bucks including travel? A Vegas residency in a 5k theater, without a crazy expensive capital recoup and high cost tech/ maintenance (sphere tech is non transferable, shows need to be produced specifically for that venue), is a proven business model. Not sure the sphere fits that bill.

    AI Overview
According to recent reports, the "Sphere" in Las Vegas, owned by the Madison Square Garden Company (MSG), is currently losing a significant amount of money, with one recent quarter reporting a loss of over $125 million dollars; essentially meaning that the Garden is losing money on the Sphere venture.
Key points about the Sphere's losses:
    • Large operating loss:
The Sphere segment of MSG Entertainment reported a substantial operating loss in the latest financial quarter.
    High development costs:
The venue's high construction costs and advanced technology are likely contributing to the losses.
    Challenges with event bookings:
Finding enough large-scale events to fill the Sphere's unique capacity may be proving difficult.
    Long-term vision:
Despite current losses, MSG executives remain optimistic about the Sphere's potential for future profitability, citing its unique capabilities and potential for global expansion.

The Las Vegas Sphere opened its 2025 financial year losing over $125 million in three months and positing its lowest revenue since opening late last year.Over that time, the $2.3 billion live entertainment venue lost over $500 million dollars.

i'm not trying to ruin marriages or anything, but barnes and noble is having an unadvertised warehouse clearance sale and this seems the best thread to share that. these prices are not online and not in-store. you have to physically go to a barnes and noble, go to the customer service desk and tell them you want to place a ship-to-home order. it might also work by phone, i haven't tried, but i can confirm it works in person. it might also work on ship-to-store, i haven't tried, but it works for certain on ship-to-home.

first, purchase a membership for $40. it will likely pay for itself immediately. it gets you free expedited shipping (at $35 or $40) and 10% off almost everything, including these prices. i haven't found any records the discount doesn't apply to. you'll also get a free canvas tote bag. you also get what amounts to 5% back in gift cards on every purchase, via the stamps you earn in the rewards program.

i can't promise any or all of these will be in stock. but i've bought and received albums that showed out of stock one day and in stock the next, so it can't hurt to keep asking.

i got all of this info on the steve hoffman forums. go there for a more exhaustive list. start around page 12 in the barnes thread.

i asked an employee to search pearl jam and vedder and soundgarden and cornell and lanegan and malkmus and pavement and guided by voices and robert pollard and centro-matic and rosenstock and lou reed and mould. the only hit was flag day ($5).

here's the artist, the album, the upc when i have it, and the pre-tax/pre-discount prices in no particular order. these can be 1, 2 or 3LPs when not specified, i don't have that broken down. and the majority i've bought have had exceptional packaging.

I've never been a Dead fan but not because I don't like them necessarily. I've just never been around anyone that was into them.

I remember the radio hits (Truckin, Casey Jones, etc) and I remember when In the Dark came out...I really liked Hell in a Bucket...didn't care for Touch of Gray too much but both were heavy on MTV

I know you were in the Bay area in this time.  Did you ever get a chance to see them in the early days, like in the streets or at Winterland, etc?

zep and the icarus and/or the symbols
I think you see the GD skull on so many more things in every day life. Shirts, stickers, hats, much more Dead than Zep.
I had to google their logo. Couldn't have told you. I recognize it, for sure, but I see way more band logos than that around.
That’s crazy talk. But in looking at Setlist, there are only 3 pages of tours in Canada, maybe 20 shows. Maybe it’s an American thing.
I also literally don't know a single person who listens to them. haha
I couldn’t name a single Grateful Dead song, and I didn’t recognise their logo either! (And I worked in a music store for 5 years)
    You never heard the songs:

    Touch of Grey
    Casey Jones
    Truckin'

C'mon...that's a little silly.  Are you Canadian too?
Ha ha, no I’m not. (I can’t figure out if that’s a bad thing?)

I just found a GD song that I know - Friend of the Devil. Although I’ve only heard covers, I didn’t know it was theirs.
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)

The Tom Petty cover on his live anthology is great.  Not sure if that’s the one you know but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Since I’m fairly sure you’re a NY guy (Goldrush?), one interesting bit of trivia is that the Dead were in the same studio recording Workingman’s Dead at the same time CSNY was recording Deja Vu.  Two seminal albums at the  same time. Anyway Jerry has always given CSN the credit for teaching them to harmonize properly, which they did to great effect on Workman and American Beauty. For his part, Crosby said that was nonsense, that the Dead needed no help.

The crossover from CSNY/ Neil to the Dead is so easy and  seamless, especially Beauty and Workman’s Dead. You should explore them. It goes as deep and wide as any band you can find.

I almost always at least sample if not listen to any used record I stock at the bookstore.  If they sit around too long, eventually they get culled.  This one was on the way out the door, but I didn't remember play-testing it, so I gave it a spin.  On closer listen, I realized, hmmm, these are well produced pop songs.  I mean, by Mickey Most, so no surprise.
Cute, simple poppy covers?  Yeah.  But hey, this was the top best selling singles band in 1965, second only to The Beatles.  Or maybe there's just a part of me reverting to my early teens self.  But in these mid 2020's, a little escapism?  Why the hell not!  So this one's staying home.

Oh, and just to throw in a little pop history, look who else was a Peter "Herman" Noone fan.  Moonie!
Peter Noone Karl Green of Hermans Hermits and Keith Moon

"Pretty cookies, heart squares all around, yeah!"
    -Eddie Vedder, "Smile"

"Try to not spook the horse."
    -Neil Young

Interesting. I read the liner notes on dejavu and see Jerry credited for playing on one song. Forget which one.

Nice!  I really would rather that than taking up space with another gate-fold. I enjoyed listening to the whole thing today, but repeated listens will mostly likely only include three or four songs.
