    It's official:
The Boston Red Sox will sign free-agent outfielder Carl Crawford to a seven-year, $142 million contract, according to multiple reports.

The Boston Globe first reported the deal Thursday night.

Crawford was considered the top position player on the free-agency market this winter.

Ah well. Let's worry about getting Lee. Crawford won't do any damage against us if he strikes out!

    too much.

Yeah, if they are at 7, I can't see them losing out. 7 years is a lot, going to be a really old team in a couple years but that is the price you pay. I still want him on the Yanks.

The words "Yankees", "buying championships" should not come out of Red Sox mouths now.

The Rangers are on their way to Arkansas. They are leaving with a deal or are out I would assume. Cross your fingers the Yanks offer is big.

I'm not sold on Lee, 7 years is a long time, he's already like 32. I wish we would worry about signing Andy, i'm getting a feeling of Deja Vu.

I don't like the idea of 7 years for Lee either but that is what it is going to take. It's going to be an old team in a couple years but I would rather have Lee for 7 than 0.

I just hope they don't do anything insane and go to 8 years, I walk away then. Put more money on the table for 7 years but don't go 8.

If he goes with Texas, I will partly blame it on the Yankee fans during game 3 of the ALCS.

On a sidenote -- How many more years does AJ have on his contract? I still cant believe he's in pinstripes.
Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)

It was 5 years? I thought he signed for 4.

5 years/$82 mil. $2 mil more than what the Braves offered.

Look at it this way - Texas will be screwed if they give Lee a 7-year deal. They'll be trading him and eating 3/4 of the contract in 3 years. For the Yanks, it's just Monopoly money.

I completely agree, I just think Ryan and Greenberg really don't want to lose this one. I doubt they have a 7 year offer on the table.

Accroding to ESPN, they brought one of two billionaires who are owners behind the scenes to the discussions with Lee... I think they have a decent shot at getting him.

I saw this. Olney talks about how there is a possibility Lees contract won't technically count towards the teams payroll and the owners will take care of it. I don't know if I really buy that.

I gotta hand it to Texas though. If they don't put this much of a fight, then this thing isn't even close.

It's not that it actually wouldn't count towards their payroll, it's that the owners would not count that as part of the payroll when giving the GM his budget. So yes, he is obviously part of the payroll but it won't restrict the GM. Make any sense?
