So I already have Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion.

Where do I go from here?
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.

Those two are great albums, too...if you like them thoroughly, then you may have a chance of enjoying their whole catalog.

My best suggestion: Go in order

    Amorica
    Three Snakes and One Charm
    By Your Side
    Lions
    Warpaint
    Before The Frost...

Be sure to check out their live album "Freak N' Roll...Into The Fog" GREAT stuff. Awesome DVD of the same show too.

My fave albums out of all those above are Amorica, Warpaint and BTF..., Amorica is just great rock, after that they begin to try new things...but all are good. Warpaint, and especially BTF... show the Crowes experimenting with some blues/country (even possibly bluegrass) roots...but they do it well.

Also, Chris & Rich Robinson have done some solo work that is wonderful. Marc Ford too...that man can wail.

The Robinson brothers also released a live album called "Brothers Of A Feather" that is beautiful. Chris's vocals and Rich's acoustic guitar, and that's it. Just awesome.

Huge Crowes fan here...going to see them on the 15th of November for the second time. STOKED :)

Definitely Amorica and Warpaint. If you like those, the rest of their catalog should appeal.

I would recommend that the next 2 you buy be Warpaint and Before the Frost...
That way, you are starting with a 'then and now' kind of thing, and picking up 2 more of their best albums in the process. To be honest, they've never put out a 'bad' record, so you can't go wrong. Although I would recommend that you get Lions last.

Oh, and DEFINITELY get Freak n' Roll... the cd and the dvd.

Probably nothing more to add but you HAVE to get Amorica. Brilliant album. Not a bad track on there and includes some of their best. Ballad in Urgency and Wiser Time are amazing.

Three Snakes is really good but has a few that don't quite work for me. But it is the last album by the best line-up of the band. After that they started a revolving door line-up for By Your Side and Lions before settling on the current line-up. They took a hiatus for a few years after Lions and that was the best thing they could have done. Lions sounded tired and the band was going through the motions live. But the new line-up that debuted on Warpaint is like a breath of fresh air for them. I was sad that Marc and Eddie left, but they aren't coming back and Luther is an excellent guitarist.

It is interesting to listen to how this band has progressed over their career. I would have never thought they would do anything like Before the Frost . . . Until the Freeze, but when you hear it, it makes perfect sense.

I agree with dcfaithful, go in order.

And don't miss Freak 'n' Roll.

I've seen TBC 20 times over the last 19 years or so, in every line-up in every era. My favs are Southern Harmony, Amorica, and Warpaint.

You know, the Black Crowes are one of those bands I kind of took for granted I guess. The first two albums were absolutely top notch, but for some reason I never really followed them much after that. I guess because none of the songs hit me quite as much as Twice as Hard, Jealous Again, Remedy, Sting Me, etc. But I'm thinking I should go back and do what's been suggested and start off with the third album and move on from there. I think they started off as something of a Rolling Stones knockoff band but have evolved a lot since then. They've really become on of the all time great American rock bands.

They really have...and it's not too late to get into them...they're coming around again into their own thing. Their new album is fucking great. I knew something special was happening with Warpaint, and they obviously felt/saw it coming too...

They're a great live act too...I would never pass up a chance to see them.

    Agreed, 1000%...
I'm like you, Gabers, sort of lost touch with them in the mid-to-late 90s, although I still would buy their records. But I really got back into them with By Your Side and have made a promise to myself that I will never miss them again when they're playing within 100 miles or so of me. And after seeing them in Orlando a few weeks ago, I realized they're definitely worth following around a bit, similar to that band from Seattle that we all love...

I rue the missed opportunities, but am hopeful they'll be around for years to come so I can make up for lost time....

I made that same promise. I don't travel to see them, but I promise to never miss them when they come here. And fortunately, that is very often. Dallas has a good turnout for them.

He used to have that on his kick drum. It was a take off of the Guiness ad with the toucan with the glass of Guiness on its beak.
