No, it's not as easy as that. As I stated before Obama wants GITMO shut down. He's made no secret about calling it a failed experiment. So why hasn't it happened? I don't know. Neither do you, and neither does Rage Against the Machine. THAT's my point. We can make all the noise we want, but if the most powerful human on the planet wants the place closed down and it hasn't been yet maybe there's more to this issue than putting names on a petition or having rock stars generate press. Do you think we have all the facts on this issue? We don't. And that's why it hasn't been shut down yet. I'm trying to look at the issue objectively (WITHOUT political filters). Is that indifference? I don't think so.
I smile, but who am I kidding...

  • This might sound nefariously inappropriate, but how many soldiers are willing to "die for their country" versus "needing someone to pay for college" or "needing a job with good benefits" and the military is the best way to accomplish that need? That is what is being sold to them on the advertisements anyway.

and if a person is willing to "die for their country," isn't that insanity? (at least in the context of preemptive warfare ala Vietnam, Nicaraugua, Iraq, Afghanistan, et al)

How many soldiers lay on their deathbed thinking "I died for a good cause" versus "Bad joke, bad joke, bad joke" (yes, that is Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus I think)

Every single one is willing to do die for their country that is what joing the military is about. Maybe it is hard to understand but while I served I knew more people did it more then the college money. Yeah its a good incentive but many have an urge to defned the country they love too.

Do they want to die no I don't thinks so but they all know the risk.

My favorite quote comes to mind. No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country.
He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country

that is all very respectable and like I said, i hope this doesn't sound too inappropriate, but I still don't see why anyone would be willing to die for any war since WWII. Willing to die for what? The false pretense of establishing a democracy? Oil? Temporary eradication of terrorists? If so, that is insanity. Otherwise, IT SEEMS they are doing it to go to college, the bennies, or they are just brainwashed. :? I'm not saying there is anything wrong with anyone's reasons to be in the military and I certainly am not proselytizing this thought process, but I still don't get the whole "dying for your country" thing. Such a waste of a life, if you ask me. All I know is that we are here now, we might only have this one life to live, and "nationality" and "patriotism" and "morality" are the reason for every war and they GLORIFY most wars. Its sick.

A bad joke, bad joke, bad joke.

How does invading Afghanistan and Iraq constitute defending your country?

    Great thought.
I forget who said it... so I have to paraphrase, **War is the decision made by old men to send their young men off to kill another old man's young men**

No U.S soldier has died 'for their country' in Iraq or Afghanistan. They've died in the attempt to fatten the wallets of a handful of fish-bellies in Washington and Texas.

To think that the average American citizen could benefit one iota from the fact that a million poor, brown skinned people have been snuffed out in the Middle East is incredibly delusional. Iraq has been destroyed and turned into a lawless terrorist training camp.
Afghanistan is run by warlords and has been turned into a terrorist training camp, and Bin Laden is alive and well 6 years after the event. No U.S soldier has 'died for their country'. They've died for a fucked-up foreign policy instigated by a bunch of fat-cat liars and armchair murderers in D.C, and these money Nazis do not represent your country.
