would you really expect anything else? its much easier to just dismiss something rather than try to see the point of the musicians that are angry about this situation.

they are not pushing their agenda on you. they are standing up for their art and condemning the use of that art in the commission of crimes against humanity. they are condemning its use at gitmo. they are not pushing any agenda on you.

well that is your opinion, isn't it? in MY opinion, when ed uses his platform at the spectrum to talk about this next week, that would be pushing his agenda on me.

well it is his platform isn't it? you are in the audience so you are gonna have to just deal with it. build a bridge and get over it and do not let it ruin your experience at the show.

Then don't go. Or leave when he says something you don't want to hear. You could always check to see if Ted Nugent's playing in town that same night?
  • Having to listen to Last Kiss for over 72 hrs... Yes, that would defiantly be considered torture in my book.

if you think gitmo should stay open you have problems. if you're upset that someone might express an opinion suggesting it close, you still have problems, but now you're also kind of a douchebag.

gitmo is like a auschwitz with better doctors. its just as shitty but they can keep you alive longer to torture you even more.

yeesssssssssss....ted nugent. good one. because if someone disagrees with mr. vedder's political stance, he must be some right wing redneck republican right? again, one of these for you fine folks....

i'm paying to hear my favorite band. not rambling political speeches. that said, of course i will "deal with it" like that other little fellow mentioned. i've "dealt with it" about 20 other times as well ;)

do you guys find it difficult to comprehend that not only left wing radicals enjoy the music of the greatest band on earth?

"Just as shitty" as a place where more than 1 million people were killed? Really??

I don't like Gitmo at all, and wish that it was shut down... but comparing it to Auschwitz is a joke.

Actually, I don't care if Gitmo itself is closed, I'd be ok with it being a place to hold the most dangerous people, but ONLY if the people there are actually charged and have a chance to legitimately defend themselves in a court process.

obviously you are not going to address the point of this thread and you are going to continue to derail the thread so we are done here, "little fellow"..

for your infomation i am not a left wing radical. on some issues i am more left than others and on other issues i am more moderate. why dont you start your own thread about how rockstars should "shut up and play" and leave this thread for discussion of the original subject? oh wait, that was covered ad nauseum back in 2004 during the dixie chicks "scandal" and the vote for change tour.

so you don't like ed's views, big deal, who says he is even going to bring this topic up at the show?

I am a strong Ron Paul supporter, so this may sound like some regurgitation if you know much about him.

I totally support us closing down Gitmo. While some of the prisoners there deserve to be there, some do not. How about some due process for these people? You can tell a lot about a country/civilization by how they treat their enemies/prisoners. I think you can tone down a lot of the hatred towards us if we stuck by our principles and values that made this country so great.

As far as torture goes, my personal rule of thumb is to use whatever methods that we use on our own troops in training. That way, we treat them just as we would our own. Unless it was played out a level that caused physical damage or was played 24/7, I personally don't think that using music constitutes torture, much less crimes against humanity. But does torture even work?

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 02242.html

In some instances, torture may get us what we want, but at what cost? Maybe if we stopped killing innocent people with our wars, we wouldn't brew up so much hatred towards us.

So musicians are against torture...m'kay, didn't know that until now.

I expect not all musicians are against torture. For example, I notice that Ted Nugent hasn't jumped on this particular wagon.

    Fair point.

I guess is is seems pretty stupid to "demand records of music used for Torture"...does it make any of those musicians MORE AGAINST keeping Gitmo open if they found out that their music was being used?

Obviously Gitmo is a complex issue. If was as easy as getting a few musicians to generate headlines to close it, it would've been gone the day after Obama took office. Regardless of intentions this just comes off looking like some kind of publicity stunt with little credibility.

So you're both going to just be indifferent, and just pass the entire issue off. Indifference is the essence of inhumanity. Yeah, I posted that before and I'll post it again, because obviously there's too many of you that simply just don't want to talk (let alone think) about the shit going down there.

I didn't say you were inhuman. It's inhumane to be so indifferent on the issues of Gitmo.

  • I can understand why a musician would be upset about their music being used to torture detainees. It's sickening to think that something you have created could be used like that.

I know Tom Morello has been a long time supporter for the closing of gitmo. RATM even goes on stage dressed in the orange jumpsuits and black hoods that the Guantanamo bay prisoners wear.

The point of the relevant protests about Guantanamo, is that there are detainees who don't have sufficient charges against them, have no right to a fair trial, and to detain them indefinitely for long periods of time is a disgrace. Music or no music.

Just be careful not to get off track with other messages. That's all i've got to say.

Maybe it would bother some people who were unaware this was going on and get them involved in the efforts to address the issues at Gitmo. Maybe the prospect of lawsuits from US citizens will force the government to stop trying to sweep it under the rug. Who knows?

Let's turn the question around on you... if it's such a non-issue, why are you bothered that they asked?

I guess I'm not all that bothered at all. Just more of the same. But it always strikes me as holier than thou to SELL something and then get pissed off when someone you don't like either a) mentions liking it or b) uses it in some manner.

You're the lawyer, is it breaking any copyright laws to use music in a manner that isn't making you any money? Like campaigns, or in this case? I can't recall.
