My daughter has the annual teachers vs 5th graders kick ball game. She's small for her age and young for her class. She was a late developer in the motor milestones arena. (Didn't walk until 17 months but was stringing multiple signs together to communicate at 6 months and talking full sentences at a year). She's just naturally laid back and a slow, peaceful mover. She rocks at yoga and was thrilled to finish our 5k under 45 minutes. unfortunately, she believes what the other kids have so perfectly taught her and that is... She's not athletic, she sucks at team sports and no one wants her on their team. :anguished: She is dreading the game despite liking to play. I had the same experience growing up and it took me until well into adulthood stop the negative self talk and to find my inner athlete. I don't want her to experience the same. SHE gets to decide who she is. They don't get to define her. FUCK them!!! I told her so before she got out of the car. She was like...OMG, Ok Mom got it... and off she went. I don't know if she got it. Please God let Selma kick that damn ball right over the heads of all those little shits!!

    Go, Selma, GO!

Brought back nightmares of childhood. No one wanted me on their team for similar reasons and would fight if they were "stuck" with me. I loved it when you came in and the gym teacher had the teams posted on the door.

We grew up with this stuff. We experienced the hurt and crap from the kids. I'm thankful that we take that experience that we have and teach our kids some good coping strategies that we didn't get from our parents. (Well, I didn't.) I'm hoping that the hell that we went through will be a help to our children as we try to get them moved through the gauntlet of mean kids.

I was the same way! It took getting hit in the for head with a softball four separate times for my dad to quit signing me up for sports! I'm just not sporty.. But when I got into track and field? I rocked! Just let her know, her strong suit is out there! She just has to be curious enough to find out what it is, on her own terms! GO SELMA!
I agree - I was small and slight (still am) and a bit intimidated in team sports when I was young so I also internalized the "not an athlete" talk, even though I was good at running and at some other individual sports. It wasn't until my late teens that I started hiking and realized that individual sports in the outdoors are where my talents lie - hiking, cycling, rock climbing, paddle-boarding, kayaking, all of which require more strength and endurance than batting a volleyball about for 45 minutes in a gym. shetellsherself, I hope you can help her realize her talents early on without her having to go through some of these less pleasant stages of childhood.

Yes! This is one of my hopes as well and why I encourage her to run with me and practice yoga together.

thank you all for your encouragement and stories! Unfortunately this experience is shared by many.

Couldn't sleep. Trying to get people scheduled to pick things up for the rummage sale I'm in charge of and people won't freaking commit! I can only haul so much in my RAV, which is a lot, but I can't throw appliances, a hutch and lawn mowers in there! Rrrr.

 for the first time in 7 years the students beat the teachers! She was very psyched about that. Bc this particular game was all of the students in the 5th grade vs the teachers there was no "picking of sides". All the kids were united on one team. Seems to me this played a huge role in how she came away feeling which was... I had so much fun! Hmmm.... I wonder if there is a lesson to be learned there. Sadly, I don't think her gym teacher is up for learning that lesson.

She only got 1 turn to kick bc there are so many kids. She did manage to kick it but it popped right up in the air and it was caught. She was fine with that though bc her little friend and her then had the opportunity to run off together to the bathroom and water station. Lol. Priorities. I'm just so happy she had fun and came away with positive feelings

My friend broke her foot at a concert last night. So all of our summer concert plans have just been thrown into chaos.

All because some asshole decided it would be a good idea to crowd surf in a crowd of 20 people.

    stupid. so stupid.
