I have no idea how to pick watermelons. I see everyone else thumping and knocking on the melons but I still don't understand what I'm listening for? I usually end up asking one the produce guys to pick one for me.

Just got home, drunk from pounding drinks after work at the bar, and discovered that I accidentally shut my cat in the closet when I took out my shoes this morning. She was trapped in there for more than 12 hours. X_X I feel so bad, and to add to my guilt, it looks like I forgot to feed her too (not that she could have accessed it). I guess since she was trapped in a closet it prevented her from reminding me to feed her. 8-| I am the worst cat mom ever. On the bright side, she didn't pee or poop in my closet. Good girl! :)

I have known certain combustible infants that have done that...not sure if it's an 'accident' or not...haha haha

I have no idea how to pick watermelons. I see everyone else thumping and knocking on the melons but I still don't understand what I'm listening for? I usually end up asking one the produce guys to pick one for me.

    How to Select a Watermelon

    1. Look for uniform shape.

Look for a firm, symmetrical watermelon free from bruises, cuts or dents. If the watermelon has any lumps or bumps, this may mean that it received irregular amounts of sunshine or water during growing, causing dryness or inconsistency.

    2. Lift it up.

The watermelon should be heavy for its size, as this indicates that it is full of water and therefore nice and ripe. Try comparing the weight of your watermelon with another of equal size - the heavier one will be the ripest. This advice goes for most fruit and vegetables.

    3. Look for the field spot.

The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot, known as the field spot. This is where the melon sat on the ground and ripened in the sun, so the darker it is the better. If the field spot is white, or even nonexistent, this probably means that the watermelon was picked too soon, and will not be ripe.

    4. Inspect the color.

A perfect, ripe watermelon should be dark green in color and dull in appearance, rather than shiny. A shiny watermelon will usually be under-ripe.

    5. Try the knocking technique.

The knocking technique can be a little hard to master, but many watermelon fans swear by it. Give the watermelon a firm rap with your knuckles and listen to the sound it makes. For a ripe melon, you want a full sound, more tenor than base. You do not want a dull or deep sound, as this means the watermelon is unripe.

    6. Know what to look for when selecting pre-cut melon.

If you're purchasing pre-cut watermelon, there are also certain things to look out for. Choose pieces with bright red flesh and dark brown or black seeds. Avoid pieces with white streaks and an abundance of white seeds. You should also steer clear if the flesh looks dried out or mealy, or is separating from the seeds.

Since the new year I have seen this guy on my evening runs. He was a big guy be he sweated it out and now he looks great, kind of like Seth Rogan when he was a bit heavier. (I've always had a thing for Seth Rogan) Anyways I want to tell him that he looks great and what a good job he's done but don't know how to say it. I don't want encouragement to be seen as more, but it's impressive he has stuck with it and I know when I was trying to get rid of my baby weight nothing felt better than another mom at the gym telling me good job.

Several things I'd like to share.
#1. I engage in a weird sort of power struggle with my own travel plans. I decide I want to check a bag for my flight, log in to my email to get the booking reference, see an email from the airline and decide I'm not gonna add the bag till tomorrow. That'll show em!

#2. Upon deciding I'm gonna check a bag I instantly become a hoarder. "I can bring this half a box of cereal if I'm checking the bag right? Why let it go to waste? And the bread. And the salami, the package reseals, it'll be fine! I wonder if I can manage the butter...."

#3. I think housekeeping is fucking with me. The sun don't set till like 11pm here so I haven't been leaving the room till noon most days. I'm pretty sure they're sick of it cuz they left the bag of garbage in the room and took my towels without replacing them. And my laptop screen was rotated upside down, but that was in the safe locked so I really don't know...
