It's one persons review... who cares!?!? So what the guy has a differing opinion than others. Emailing him is not going to amount to anything anyways. I can't help but laugh at how people get all frantic and angry just because their friends or a music critic says something negative about the band. Not everybody has to like them....
I did, and I told him how much he sucks at what he does.
I think he should know how shitty his reviews are.
Now I fee better now You should try..
well, at least you accomplished something. (making yourself feel better that is)
i bet a million dollars he gets two sentences into your email and hits delete, doesnt think twice and continues writing what he wants to write.
Yeah he probably doesnt give a shit about what I think but oh well. It just chaps my ass a bit that someone can write such a negative review about an album that is an absolute masterpiece. Its like he writes it just to piss people off. If he had any sort of ear for music there is no way it would have been that negative...in my opinion.

you had me up until that point... Backspacer is not an absolute masterpiece. It just isnt.
you're letting your fanaticism cloud your judgment... just as the author of the review allowed his dislike of previous PJ work to cloud his.
unfortunately that makes you both as bad as each other.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

i have been warned by Kat to leave you alone. yes i'm serious. apparently i'm not allowed to say the album isnt an 'absolute masterpiece' :?

So.. how would you define 'absolute masterpiece'? What is your benchmark? What other albums would you consider an 'absolute masterpiece'? Personally, I like the album but can you honestly say there is absolutely nothing to fault about it? Is it really their most creative and inspiring work?

What's confusing? Stop being a hater and she'll be nice to you...i've learned that lesson the hard way.
Now... I didn't see any 'hater' in Dunk's post. He didn't say the album was rubbish or give a poor review of it (which I think is the main theme of this thread). He just said he did not think it was an 'absolute masterpiece', nothing more. His opinion, just like Black10 gave his/hers, just like you gave yours. Lots of people don't think it's an absolute masterpiece or a classic, whilst still really liking the album.

Well obviously everyone has there own opinion as to what a "masterpiece" is but for me its quite simple, as far as Backspacer goes anyways..
I listen to Backspacer from start to finish for 37 minutes. To me, it feels like those 37 minutes goes by in about 5 minutes. Thats how much enjoyment I get out of EVERY one of the songs. They fly by. There is not one song I skip over, like alot of other albums, and I fall in love with a different song every day. And when the second "The End" is done I cannot start the album over fast enough. To me, personally, that's my definition of a masterpiece.

So you can accept that Dunk's (and other's) opinion that Backspacer is NOT a masterpiece is just as valid as they may have different ideas as to what a masterpiece really is? Just as you are saying it's a masterpiece, are these people not allowed to say it isn't (whether one posting here or a reviewer) without being 'lynched'?
Pitchfork is a website for pussies. They never supported Pearl Jam or Eddie and probably never will. They suck. The more attention you give them the more they will give shitty reviews instead of no review. Don't give their websites any hits.

He told someone who loves the album that they "allowed their fanaticism" to "cloud their judgment" and the album isn't a masterpiece.
I told him that the person was allowed to have their own opinion just as he was to have his own opinion.
If someone campaigns for the negative to change someone's mind about the music, it isn't ok. Pick THE bashing thread and communicate there. You are entitled to your opinion but the people who love the music (and they are in the majority) do not have to be subjected to the constant negativity from those who don't care for it. The people who love it have rights too.
Period...and I hope it helps but if it doesn't, don't do it anyway.

wise woman.
also, all this discussion of 'masterpiece'...yes, exactly....it is SUBJECTIVE. while, collectively, many may agree on what is a masterpiece, and thus win accolades, kudos.....there will still always be those who disagree, and you know what? they are NOT wrong! when it comes to things such as art....music......film....food......TASTE IS SUBJECTIVE. sure, there are all sorts of 'objective' barometers for judging 'greatness'...but again, that STILL is subjective, b/c it is all based on subjectivity, such as time/place, culture, etc.
christ, i like backspacer. i don't love it, but i like it. i love 2 songs for sure and enjoy more...but none the less, i still adore pearl jam and think they are one of the most amazing bands. ever. however, i don't have a snitfit over people who don't think that. :P also, i read the article in the OP, and while i disagree with most of it, i also see a few kernels of truth here or there....and yes, bottomline, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and critics are paid to share those. and so it goes and life goes on.......

I dont believe in opinions...there are only facts and fictions. Let me give you an example:

FICTION
2) Backspacer is an absolute masterpiece
