  • Riot Act was OKAY but it was clearly their worst.

    Well I clearly disagree.

Thumbing My Way's in my top 10, it's such a beautiful song. Nothing on Backspacer holds a candle with it.

Lol, you can have ANY song on Backspacer, and I'll take Sleight of Hand. ;)
if riot act is better, why pick a song from binaural?

I was thinking the same thing.
  • I was thinking the same thing.

Binaural is probably one of my favorite Pearl Jam records, that mood can never be replicated again. To me it has more depth than Backspacer without all the bells, piano, violins, ect.

    Less is more.

Binaural is my least favorite. Don't hate it. Just find myself skipping more and more of it as time goes by.

It's okay, to me it's one of the weaker tracks on the record.

More of a Light Years/Thin Air/Sleight of Hand kind of guy.

Insignificance and Breakerfall kicked ass too.

And Of a Girl changed everything for me.

Never really liked OTG all that much, until I saw it live. Still can't really listen to the album version, though. Live versions make it their bitch.

This is getting really ridiculous. Of course there are plenty of songs that are listenable on Riot Act..Thumbing My Way being one of them, and actually one of my favorites to play on the guitar..it's great that it's your favorite PJ song, we get it, but this notion that Riot Act is a better album is a bunch of nonsense...

I know it's cool to like the unpopular album, but let's get real here..there is no way anyone would willingly sit through Riot Act without skipping..Help Help, Bushleaguer, Cropduster, You Are, Get Right, Ghost...the others I can almost understand, but there is no way in hell anyone could consistently listen to every song..thus, why the record as a whole is widely referred to as their weakest..which it clearly is..

If i listen to Riot Act, one of the songs i always skip is Thumbing, the other being Ghost. You Are is the fucking business. I listen to pretty much the whole album through except for Thumbing and Ghost, they bore me. No offence to Thumbing fans, i know lots of people go mad for that song.

I prefer Riot Act to No Code & Yield. Thats just me. No reason why someone cant like Riot Act more than another album.

Backspacers great and accessible, but i wonder if it will demand my attention in the future the way Vitalogy, Binaural or Riot Act do with all the nooks & crannies to the songs. All i know is I've been walking around singing the songs in my head for days, and I havent done that (ie: clicked with a PJ album immediately) since Yield.

    Ultimately, who cares?
  • I prefer Riot Act to No Code & Yield.

Me too. Only song I skip is Bushleaguer, even though it has one of the greatest choruses of any PJ song IMO.

And I love how Eddie sings on it (as I have stated) (Maybe Save You and Help Help could have used a little more "punch though, as evident by the live versions of Help Help which rock).

Prefer that way of singing on Riotc Act to the "out of breath squealing" of Avocado, recent live shows and also Backspacer (even though BoB did a good job mixing it to sound good :) )

Also likes the softer sound of the 2003 boots. Would rather hear Cropduster live than Spin The Black Circle for example. Bu that's just me. I don't need them being punk or rocking out as in 93, to me they could go the Riot Act route all out.

But still. Backspacer is a nice accesable album. But in the PJ universe, nothing special. No new hights.

LOL! Right on, The Champ. I've always felt that Riot Act contained some good songs that I really liked (All or None, Can't Keep being two of them), but as a whole it was their weakest effort. Now, Binaural, which most of my friends just don't get, has become one of my favorites over the years. I absolutely love that album. I am not willing to rank Backspacer anywhere yet - I've only had it since Thursday. Waaaaaaaaay too early for me to rank it. All I know is I've taken to it MUCH more than I ever did to Riot Act or Binaural upon first listen to either of those records. I love this new record so far.

Now, over time Binaural became one of my favorites - by any band - of the last decade. Riot Act - not so much. So who knows which way Backspacer will go for me, but as of right now I like it much more than Riot Act.

I don’t mind the comparisons, but what I hope that all the diehard PJ fans out there realize is that Pearl jam is great because every album they have released is good in its own right and appeals to different people. You can pick ten random Pearl Jam fans and ask them what their favorite PJ album is and you have a damn good shot at getting ten different responses (If you include Lost Dogs), I don’t think you can say that about any other band in history with the exception of the Beatles. Personally, Backspacer doesn’t appeal to me as much as a No Code or Vitalogy, however I can see the good in the album, be it the first four guitar driven songs or “just breathe” (which I think will finally win over my wife as a fan). I can see their vision; the album as a whole sounds like nothing on the radio right now and it sounds different than anything that they have previously released. I can find something I like in every song on Backspacer which in my opinion makes it a good album. No matter what you think about it, you have to say it is a high quality album even if it doesn’t appeal to you as much as other albums, because that is what it is, a high quaility album. That said, Backspacer proves again that Pearl Jam have been the most consistent band since 1990.

I think Thumbing My Way is one of the most beautiful songs they have written, but I think Just Breathe is right up there. I'm not saying you're wrong in your opinion of Thumbing My Way, but I personally feel that there is definitely one, if not two, songs on Backspacer that rival Thumbing My Way in terms of beauty and emotional impact. My opinion though, it's clear we don't see eye to eye on Backspacer, but that works.

Sorry man I just think that lyrically Backspacer can't hold a handle to Riot Act.

"And the young they can lose hope cause they don't see beyond today, the wisdom that the old can't give away."

That's wisdom that Target can't buy you. ;)

    fuck yeah to this!

how about "to myself i surrender - to the one i'll never please"?

riot act is my favorite PJ record as of today...

Condescending much? Not trying to cause a flame war or anything, but opinions presented in this manner kind of get my proverbial goat. There are a couple of fairly weak songs on Riot Act (Get Right and Ghost, I'm looking at you!), but most of their albums do have a few weak efforts. No big deal! I am one of those people who really, really likes Riot Act, but you know what? I am really enjoying Backspacer so far, too!

Just sayin.... not everyone thinks of thumbing my way the same way you do in a humourus way. You will probably get a chuckle out of that the next few times you listen to the song and can't help but picturing Eddie "thumbing his way to heavan"

The song is just ok for me. It sounds beautiful enough but its still a little boring and a little cheesy.

They are different, and all three have their own sound. I like the simplicity of them, and the uniqueness in each of them. And I like the fact that there's no bells, violins, or bells.

I so want to get into an argument on why Sleight of Hand blows. But I won't, and I'll agree with you, the ballads don't work for me and the Piano does more harm than good throughout, but...... Unthought Known is their best mistempo moment since I Got Id. It is the one song where Eddie nails the positivity in his lyrics without sounding hokey. "Dream the dreams of other men, and you will have no Rivals" is as good as it gets, especially sung with that winning melody. The album has some real good rockin' moments, even if the ballads fall flat.
