And the same people started the " I hate Gone" thread , right ? fuckin amatuers...
    actually i like gone.

but, people are entitled to their opinions. some of you people act as though since you pay 20 bucks a year to post here that you have to cum all over anything and everything the band does and/or releases. it's okay to not like something the band does...
that's pretty cheap really - paying 20 bucks to cum all over someone ONCE, let alone as many times as you want for a whole year!

Hmmmm... I guess it doesn't sound like PJ traditionally has with respect to the level of production they usually employ (more stripped down) or the variety of instrumental accompaniment they usually have (significantly less), but here's the thing to me as I listen to Backspacer for the somewhere-in-the-teenth time already... This is what Pj sounds like now.

I'm completely along for the ride.

  • Its a great song and also fantastic placement right before Just Breathe. The songs immature sexual longing for a fantasy woman bumps up hard against the musings of mortality that follow. Physical to spiritual. The urban feel of Johnny Guitar changes to a rural country setting, its these sorts of jolts and surprises that I really like about the album.

    Great post spaggles.

Johnny Guitar is one of the best songs on the album. I can't even believe Pearl Jam was able to put a song together this well. Ed's lyrics and vocal delivery on top of this catchy music is just the jolt I want from Pearl Jam. Jeff is AMAZING on this album and JG showcases this fact very well. I love when he goes high on the fret board.

Nice reference to "Pictures of Lilly"

    not hate.
    truth.

The second verse, the one about "the type of woman responsible for original sin" is pretty fucking phenomenal, lyrically.

I'm not a huge fan of the song. Probably my least favorite on the album. But I can't really bitch about the lyrics.

    well i can...;)
seriously, one of my least faves on the album and mostly due to the lyrics and delivery, but c'est la vie.....there is still plenty of pearl jam to love! the album overall is still definitely growing on me and i am really getting into a few tunes, and yes....some i don't think i ever will, and hey, that's ok too. i don't expect to love every single song ed/pj create, and i don't think they would expect it either...

I'll give you "delivery" ... it is quite odd ... and that might be why my ears don't like it. But Ed does do some pretty good lyricizing there. A girl so innocent she sleeps in her clothes ... that's some pretty cool imagery.

Me, too. But some of that has to do with my favorite song on the album comes up right after it. JG suffers from being the "opening band" so to speak for Just Breathe.

  • I love JG! Loved it from the start. So different for them too. Great, unique vocal delivery. Very cool music. I just love the vibe to this one. Might be my fave Matt tune. I just don't know how Ed's gonna be able to pull it off in concert.
  • This song is in my top three from Backspacer. I've always been a big Def Leppard fan (especially early Def Leppard music) and this song sounds just like a tune that you would have heard off of High 'N Dry (DL's second album). I know that a couple of the guys were huge Def Leppard fans growing up.

Thats my only complaint, seems like its incomplete, should be a little more to it, just kind of dies off.
    This weekend we rock Portland
  • I didn't care for it too much the first couple of listens, but it started growing on me. Then I saw it preformed last night, and I LOVE it live!
  • I really did not like it at first glance but I gave it another chance. Not my favorite on the album but certainly not skipping it. Speed of Sound is going down to the only skipper on the album. The rest of it is golden.

I don't get that at all - Johnny Guitar is def in my top 3 faves on this album. You know what, ALL of Backspacer is AMAZING. The more I listen to it, the more I can't stop listening to it, if that makes any sense!

I know what you mean. People need to listen to albums 3 or 4 times before posting reviews, I think. I' ve often come across albums/songs that don't strike me at first, but after several listens, they turn out to be absolute gems.

Listen to the album a few more times, learn all the nuances/undertones of each song, then come back and write a review.

Well said, Mamasan. I actually posted something over the weekend saying I was unimpressed with Backspacer, but I couldn't disagree with myself more now.

The last song I heard on my drive in this morning was Johnny Guitar and all I keep hearing is: "I'll hide my disappointment cause for years I have been hoping that when she came she'd be coming just for me..."

Eddie is singing about having a womans tits in his face - talk about suprises, did you ever think you would hear something like that on a Pearl Jam album?!

  • At first, I didnt like this song, now I love it. I thought it was good live last night. Actually, I thought all the new songs were good last night.

  • I don't see much hate for it, to be honest with you. It seems to be a universally loved song, as it well should. There's only a few stragglers who can't get their heads around anything Matt writes.

It's isn't terrible by any means, but on the bottom of my list for the album. Kind of like Big Wave on self titled.

Good comparison. It's a shame the music for Big Wave is wasted with those lyrics.

    you're right.
and i find in a few tunes on the album with some GREAT lyrics, mixed into some not so great lyrics, and what can i say? i am accustomed to damn fine, amazing lyrics, consistently, from ev. there are a couple of tunes that i am not fond of the delivery/phrasing and yet still possess some amazing lyrics...and then also a few lines that make me cringe. it's definitely different, and a very different reaction for me. there are most definitely quite a few pj songs i don't care for, but i outright don't care for em. backspacer challenges me a lot, in that i may really like the music, but get stuck on some lyrics...or some phrasings......so there is really nothing i outright 'dislike'...but it makes it disjointed, for me.

and in all fairness, there are a few outright GEMS, just perfect.......

My least fav song on the album, possibly a worse song than Sweet Lew. The vocals and lyrics are so bad.
