Johnny Guitar Hate?

  • Johnny Guitar is one of the worst songs they've ever done. Cringeworthy.
    Come to send, not condescend...
  • its fantastic! seems to be thrashy punky & then goes a bit off, poignant & edgy.
  • Definatly my favourite song on the album. It has the strangest flow, it's fantastic. Its probably also the most original song on the album. It's funny some people don't like it because I'd consider myself fairly critical, especially about some of the newer material and to me this killed my skeptisicm. Actually the album overall really impresses me. Some fantastic songs on this one.
  • i love it - love the unique time signature/s, love the loosely sung style with which EV attacks the end of each verse, love the break with "...and i sleep with the light on, in case she comes...", and i can't wait to hear them drag the end of it on a little bit more in the live scenario too, with some eddie screamin and MM/SG goin hard!

    actually i like gone.

but, people are entitled to their opinions. some of you people act as though since you pay 20 bucks a year to post here that you have to cum all over anything and everything the band does and/or releases. it's okay to not like something the band does...

that's pretty cheap really - paying 20 bucks to cum all over someone ONCE, let alone as many times as you want for a whole year!

Saying it don't sound like PJ and a bunch of other bs!!

Hmmmm... I guess it doesn't sound like PJ traditionally has with respect to the level of production they usually employ (more stripped down) or the variety of instrumental accompaniment they usually have (significantly less), but here's the thing to me as I listen to Backspacer for the somewhere-in-the-teenth time already... This is what Pj sounds like now.

I'm completely along for the ride.

What's up with that! I think the song is awesome!! Not my favorite on the album but WTF!! I don't get it!

I'm enjoying Johnny Guitar an awful lot too! :)

  • Its a great song and also fantastic placement right before Just Breathe. The songs immature sexual longing for a fantasy woman bumps up hard against the musings of mortality that follow. Physical to spiritual. The urban feel of Johnny Guitar changes to a rural country setting, its these sorts of jolts and surprises that I really like about the album.

    Great post spaggles.

Johnny Guitar is one of the best songs on the album. I can't even believe Pearl Jam was able to put a song together this well. Ed's lyrics and vocal delivery on top of this catchy music is just the jolt I want from Pearl Jam. Jeff is AMAZING on this album and JG showcases this fact very well. I love when he goes high on the fret board.

Nice reference to "Pictures of Lilly"

The second verse, the one about "the type of woman responsible for original sin" is pretty fucking phenomenal, lyrically.

I'm not a huge fan of the song. Probably my least favorite on the album. But I can't really bitch about the lyrics.

    well i can...;)
seriously, one of my least faves on the album and mostly due to the lyrics and delivery, but c'est la vie.....there is still plenty of pearl jam to love! the album overall is still definitely growing on me and i am really getting into a few tunes, and yes....some i don't think i ever will, and hey, that's ok too. i don't expect to love every single song ed/pj create, and i don't think they would expect it either...
    Stay with me...

I'll give you "delivery" ... it is quite odd ... and that might be why my ears don't like it. But Ed does do some pretty good lyricizing there. A girl so innocent she sleeps in her clothes ... that's some pretty cool imagery.

Me, too. But some of that has to do with my favorite song on the album comes up right after it. JG suffers from being the "opening band" so to speak for Just Breathe.

  • I love JG! Loved it from the start. So different for them too. Great, unique vocal delivery. Very cool music. I just love the vibe to this one. Might be my fave Matt tune. I just don't know how Ed's gonna be able to pull it off in concert.
