Song was as lifeless live as it was on the studio version. No jam, just a canned pop song. They will be bored with this song before Philly is done.

insert that Matt Damon line from Singles

Let me give the final verdict on this crowd.

I was front/centre against the rail. An hour before PJ was set to come on, everyone started filtering out of the beer gardens and VIP, which were positioned perfectly so that the emerging drunks would surge and push the crowd forward towards the stage. Luckily I was on Mike's side of the security space in front, so I was protected for the most part from the initial squeeze. But looking over the security pit (about five feet) I could see guys and girls who literally couldn't breathe because they were so squished. One girl wanted out but the security guys could've pull her because she was jammed b/n people.

Once the show started it was a bit easier for people to climb out because of the movement of the crowd, and most people that came out could barely walk on their own. For the most part I was clear from all the D-bags because I was at the front and with mostly hardcore Pearl Jam fans, but the douches weren't far behind me, and a lot of them floated over my head.

The crowd in the 'pit', overall, was ridiculous. The guys in the video aren't even paying attention to the band. I fully understand I chose to go to a GA show, but I'd rather not have to worry about defending my life while I'm standing in front of Ed. And the reason you only really see guys is because every girl I saw was fighting for her life to get the hell out of there.

Kudos to the band, though, for feeding off the energy but doing their best to keep everyone alive. The show was awesome.

And THAT is why I am not going to Austin City Limits. Not that it took your message for me to decide or anything... :) But I had considered going, know a lot of people in Austin, but thought about a huge field with 70,000 people and thought... no thanks. I'll wait for my PJ-only show and sit in the first 5 rows, please.

You know the funniest thing about this video? These assholes are acting all excited and rocking out for the fucking FIXER. What happened when they played fuckin' EVEN FLOW, which all those dickheads know by heart from GUITAR HERO?! If you watch the Unemployable video on youtube (same filmer I think), the very end has the first second of E-Flow and you can hear everyone go nuts.

I'll say it again...fuckin' festivals.... suck.

  • Hey DavidG, I'm pretty sure you're the guy I was talking to most of the day, this is Arthur! :) It definitely sucked having to watch overhead for flying feet while we were trying to watch the band, and we had it easier being against the rail, I think. Although I have some hella road rash from leaning against that rail. I think the amount of people in attendance was just a bit higher than that venue could safely accommodate but not by much. Honestly, all that energy was pretty awesome leading up to PJ. The way I look at it, that whole day was just an extended PJ concert with a ton of cool openers. :)

I am so glad I was a part of this show. Seeing PJ outdoors is the greatest! And they played Severed Hand! I was going ballistic during that song. I hope a video surfaces. :D

I finally got to actually watch the video.. I really, really have to resist the urge to take cheap shots at Calgary here...I'm from their rival city, I should be happy to see this dorkiness ....but...I'm going to resist the urge to generalize about Cowtown, cause I have lots of bro's there ;)
Yes, there were a few people being idiots, and I'm sure they were being TOTAL idiots during the hit songs...but is this supposed to be a surprise? This happens at EVERY GA rock show; festival, stadium, club, whatever...there are always a bunch of goons at the front that are just there to be goons...esp. at the start. Most shows mellow a bit once they hit their stride, and there-for-the-party guys like white-shades are gone in search of more beer or to find girls to annoy.
the Fixer was played early on...like I said, I wasn't in the pit, but I'm guessing that a lot of the goons were gone early, and there were more...um...civilized  people up front for the second half.
and ya, I'm sure there is that elitist 10c element that hates GA cause they're spoiled by the best seats. aw. fuck me if a 'real fan' doesn't get to be as close to the band as some random, lesser fan  I mean those high-10C# losers already got two primo rows for their stupid lottery, right? I'm sure there were a lot of people up front thruout the night that have never had a chance to be that close, and maybe never will again.

This festivals mistake was not having that middle of the crowd barricade that all festivals are doing now. It's a very smart and useful safety measure. I'm surprised that wasn't a requirement by PJ management.

wow, that song is just plain awful. sorry, i'm usually not negative about anything on here but i just can't keep it in any longer. i absolutely HATE this song. i've never felt so negative about a pearl jam song, with the exception of mankind. this however, makes mankind sound like black. i get a strong feeling that mike and jeff hate the fixer as well. that's obviously speculation but knowing what i know about these guys, i'm pretty sure stone, matt and ed think it's "fun" (after all, they wrote it) but ed will tire of it soon. i bet you a million bucks mike and jeff fucking hate it. seriously, ask them if you get a chance and pm me to tell me i was right.

Arthur man, how's it going?! Good to hear from you again.

I agree with you that the energy in the place starting at about 6:30 was pretty awesome, despite the danger. Hey, it helped me get over my heat stroke, which very nearly caused me to miss PJ. I think part of the reason I'm sort of annoyed by the crowd situation is that Ed had to stall the show a couple of times to calm everyone down. I fully appreciate him doing that, and I know why he does, but I thought it took away a bit from the flow. Having said that, the band only got more and more into it as the show went on.

Arthur, you should've hung around a bit after the show ... I got Mike's setlist!

Take a shot at Calgary anytime! I do not care, I am Saskatchewan guy so I am used to constant "comments"...lol.

Also regardless if these dudes were actually d-bags or just appeared to be d-bags the most important thing is that PJ may have picked up some new fans. I was reading a few Calgary orientated message boards where people were talking about how this was the best concernt they have seen in their life (first time show go-er's to boot). So that is a good thing for the band.

One positive thing about the crowd is that they rocked out to the "hits" and to the lesser known songs so I need to give them props for that.

    Good find!

...not quite the master songs like they had in the 90's (sounds a bit too pretty and poppy like Good Charlotte for my taste) but this is the direction the band has chosen. They sound dead-on with their album, I will give them that.

  • Well geez, looking at the forums on the official pearl jam website and youtube comments, it appears it's unanimous that calgarians are bunch of douchebags, who don't know how to act at a pearl jam concert.

I thought the energy up front was awesome, and Eddie Vedder and the band seemed to feeding off of it and loving it, but according to hardcore pearl jam fans from across the world (who apparantly know better than Pearl jam), proper PJ ettiquette is to not jump and mosh along to the songs.

Oh well, Eddie seemed to be having a blast, we had a blast, so those hardcore fans that hate crowds moving and having fun to the music, and creating a better atmosphere, can cry about it, and then act "proper" when PJ comes to their city.

Above quote taken from a Calgary Flames message board...lol....must have been reading this very thread....next poster on that forum commented (in verbatim)...."Maybe because those are the fans that know the meaning of Love Boat Captain"........and yes the original quote I put above my post is a guy in The Fixer video...lol.....but he is correct the energy was amazing still say that regardless of any DVD or show I have previously watched/attended PJ had 10x more energy at this show......

Crowd surf on my head you moron and see what happens. We're 30+ now. You idiots. Or... is it just Canadians that still do this stupid shit?

As far as "being prepared"... ummm... Bonnaroo didn't have this idiocy and I venture to bet that it was much larger a festival. People weren;t even retards during Metallica.

Anyway, I love it, open a gap, grab his clothes, and slam his head into the ground as best you can. That's the best remedy.

    the littlest crowd surfer (r.i.p.)

I honestly believe this is a rarity.. I go to lots of shows in Canada.... crowds are usually low key. Not sure what was happenin at this Festival. People were probably just too drunk... :)

This festivals mistake was not having that middle of the crowd barricade that all festivals are doing now. It's a very smart and useful safety measure. I'm surprised that wasn't a requirement by PJ management.

You're referring to "T Barricade". It breaks up the crowd so no deadly pressure builds up for the people up front from the people behind them, and it keeps the crowd from swaying way off left or right. If it was a huge crowd, I'm surprised too if the band didn't use that. From the video, it seems the people in front had plenty of room to move though. Those of us who were at Randall's in '96 will recall even with the T barricade that the pressure up front was still pretty intense, and not much room to maneuver.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

    agreed. :(

I love Canada. I love being Canadian. But Canadian concert goers are often douches. Either too obnoxious or too quiet.

(Although, Buffalo fans are f'in annoying too.)

and most canadians live so close to the boarder for a reason...

Yes, economic purposes :).. plus it's warmer

wow, that song is just plain awful. sorry, i'm usually not negative about anything on here but i just can't keep it in any longer. i absolutely HATE this song. i've never felt so negative about a pearl jam song, with the exception of mankind. this however, makes mankind sound like black. i get a strong feeling that mike and jeff hate the fixer as well. that's obviously speculation but knowing what i know about these guys, i'm pretty sure stone, matt and ed think it's "fun" (after all, they wrote it) but ed will tire of it soon. i bet you a million bucks mike and jeff fucking hate it. seriously, ask them if you get a chance and pm me to tell me i was right.

I hope they play The Fixer 12 consecutive times at whatever show you go to.

Hey, *I* think festivals suck. YOU can think whatever you want. If that video looked like your idea of a fun Pearl Jam concert, then go for it. I'll skip it. Bonnaroo did sound pretty awesome, great bootleg, great setlist. But music comes second for the majority of people at those festivals. They're there for some bands and not others. I'd rather not be stuck in the back of a field surrounded by smelly stoners talking at the top of their lungs over my favorite Pearl Jam songs. No offense to smelly stoners...you guys have your charm. :) "fans" who really only know a handful of songs and are there to mosh, bodysurf, and be annoying are not my idea of a fun battle in order to try to enjoy a concert by my favorite band. Thanks anyway. It's not 1992 anymore. Thank god!!!

Plus, having a picture of a black man in white-face as your avatar is NOT cool. So your opinion matters about "this much." Yeah, I get it, it's the Joker, ha ha, HILARIOUS. It's still not cool. If there are any black people on this board, you should ask them what they think of that.

One positive thing about the crowd is that they rocked out to the "hits" and to the lesser known songs so I need to give them props for that.

 ya, I've always noticed that Calgary seems to have an awful lot of 'pretty' guys....but just as many pretty girls, so I guess it balances out. s'ok, if this was an Edmonton show, we'd all prob be laughing at mullets and leather ball caps  I stopped taking shots at Sask after spending time in Saskatoon in 05...loved it there! well, ok...I still take shots at Saskatchewan, but not as many ;)
You're absolutely right about the new fan aspect of festivals. The elitist attitude of much of the PJ fanbase is pretty universally recognized. WE are known as douches to casual fans worldwide. Wonder why?

....and fanch has got to have a 'stuff white people like' link that's geared towards a white man getting offended over something trivial, on behalf of black people. like....wow. some of the concerned citizens around here can bitch about anything.
