not really a fan of how they tuned down to play the song live.. it sounded kinda flat to me, and nowhere near as energetic as the studio version.

Well, it WAS the first time they've ever played it live.

Also, the audio on that guy's camera is far from perfect.

    Give it a chance.

i hear ya, but audio quality aside, they played the song in a completely different (lower) key.

they did the same thing with life wasted last year, and that song lost some punch as well.

now, i know why they did it.. because it's easier on eddie's throat, particularly for LW. but i didn't think the fixer would be that much of a strain for eddie that they would have to drop down.
i'm more a fan of popular bands.. like the bee-gees, pearl jam
  • Yep the crowd was full of D-bags, I was initially (before the show) near the front but I could tell 20 minutes before PJ hit the stage that it would get stupid and it did.

I seen a hand-ful of young/old women leaving crying, some dude bleeding from his nose/lip plus had a black eye. Seen two very nice couples (around 35 years of age) high tailing out of there because it was stupid.

My g/f did not want to be involved in it so we moved 15 paces back and we had a better view and more enjoyable time. Minus the shirt-less guy/backwards hat that insisted on crowd surfing in an area where no one seen him (or for the matter wanted to aid him in his quest to crowd surf) who almost took off my head. He did a face plant on my shoulder then proceeded downward face first into rocks.

No lying, LESS than two minutes later it repeated with the same guy and no one wanting to catch him, and without my shoulder to break his fall he did a complete header into the rocks....moron and morons trying to toss people in an area outside of the pit. I think the guy left with a concussion because he could barely walk straight and looked very disorientated, or he was hammered. Well most likely a little bit of column and a little bit of column b.

I agree with coachchris...the setup at this festival was BRUTAL, borderline dangerous...I watched a guy with a 3 or 4 yr old girl on his shoulders trying to get away from the bottleneck where the barricades were moved (Ed mentioned it)...it nearly caused a friggin avalanche of people trying to make room for him. (watching drunks standing on a hill all night was kinda entertaining, kinda annoying).
I stayed out of the pit and enjoyed the show from about 50 ft in front of the soundbooth.

There WERE a lot of idiots there....saw a few juice pigs scrapping in the beer gardens (a first for a PJ show - never seen a fight at one before) ....But holy fuck some of you people sound down right geriatric the way you talk about those in the pit...to each their own. People should know what to expect at the front. Don't go in if you don't like it...the venom towards those that chose to partake is a bit over the top. From what I saw, there wasn't much that went on that doesnt' go on at ANY GA show....the crowd was very well behaved, Ed even mentioned it at the end...

Hey no problem with the pit here but making the case there were tonnes of d-bags, however, I left because my g/f wanted to leave I would stayed and pushed close if need be. But where we ended up (edge of the pit) was good enough as I could see better and could pay more attention.

Judging from the band I almost want to say they enjoyed the mayhem, something a little different I guess. Maybe not having the "hard-cores" all standing up front leaving for a piss break during Even Flow and playing to a different audience (that regardless of a lot of the mosh crowd being d-bags they really gave energy to every single song like a hard-core fan), will give them credit to that.

Just had a feeling looking at the guys looking back to crowd full of smiles and giving point outs I think the energy of the pit brought them to life. Band look way more lively than when I seen them four times in 2005.

But I agree if it is GA be prepared for the craziness.
  • its a rock concert.

Crowd surf on my head you moron and see what happens. We're 30+ now. You idiots. Or... is it just Canadians that still do this stupid shit?

As far as "being prepared"... ummm... Bonnaroo didn't have this idiocy and I venture to bet that it was much larger a festival. People weren;t even retards during Metallica.

Anyway, I love it, open a gap, grab his clothes, and slam his head into the ground as best you can. That's the best remedy.

Well if you've been listening for around 20 years, sure... you're 30 and up. But it's nice that you young lads enjoy the show too :)

    I am 25.

But crowdsurfing etc are for morons. And people in that crowd looked quite... funny.

At least there wasn't a bunch of flags in teh audience. Can't stand people with their stupid flags. "Oh look at me I'm from Portugal".

sounds like that piano intro into the bridge has been replaced with a guitar when it's live.

    thank god.

I've never been convinced that is a piano. I think it is has always been a guitar effect.

wow, and the crowd surfers are the douches, huh? sounds like you're doing your best to top them in that dept.

No worries RiC, I wasn’t referring to your post…I understand what you’re saying, and ya…people that crowd surf just for fun piss me off….it should be a last-resort way out of the pit only. Doing it towards the back is even stupider – people aren’t prepared for it…my neck was fucked for months after taking the full weight of a surfer square on my head at a Beasties show in the 90’s. If you were with your girl and she wasn’t into it, you were wise to move back. I was with a friend that wasn’t a huge fan, and I was going out after the show, so I didn’t want to be soaked in sweat….but I’d probably have gone up otherwise. I’m just commenting on the number of people slagging GA shows in general, and calling other fans dbags because of how they look or simply b/c they’re IN a pit…PJ fans come from all walks, and I know a lot of die hard fans that were up front.

I've been to 3 GA shows for PJ. Sunfest 93, Lolla 07, and this Virgin fest 09. And this years had by far the most douche bags. It was non-stop idiots crowd surfing. They think they are more "cool" if they crowd surf at a concert. There was this one super fat fuck that was crowd surfing all night(injuring and annoying many), so I made sure he got a solid elbow in the head when I had a chance. :D If I have to take a chance in getting injured by their boots and shit. Well then they have to take a chance in getting injured by my elbows or fists.

Lolla had 5 times as many people, but was 5 times less annoying. And although Sunfest was crazy, It just seemed like it was more about crazy love for the music, not trying to look cool.

-Back to the subject of the thread, The fixer was nothing special live. Just a decent song. But Got Some on the other hand was incredible live. Having them played back to back really proved how much better of a song got some is. There really was no comparison. I really hope Got some is played at all the other shows I attend this year. I could take or leave The Fixer.

I'm looking forward to getting back to normal shows. And with the added shows today i'll be over 25 in no time. Soooooooooo excited!
  • i had plenty of laughs at the Lolla crowd surfing, there was an open space in front of me and everyone got pushed there, i aided plenty of people in achieving a dentist bill.
  • Thanks for the video post! I thought it sounded pretty good and look forward to hearing it live myself.

My only problem with the crowd in the video was how many people weren't even paying attention to the band. Other than that, they looked like they were having fun and isn't that really what it's all about?
  • there was no crowd surfing going on at Bonnaroo. but they shuffled people out of the front after every band, so maybe that kept people from going too nuts. everybody seemed pretty cool to me.

    I thought they played awesome.

On another note... NOTHING can be worse than NIN/Perfect Circle crowd. I was in the 3rd row GA and Im a girl close to dwarf-size. HORRIBLE! This crowd wasnt bad but looked pretty annoying. White shades guy should be banished from all Pearl Jam concerts.

Yep, having fun is what it's all about. But to pay money to go to a show, wouldn't you be looking / focusing your eye's & ears at the band @ work on the front stage? Where the music is coming from? The majority of the people there in that video are looking at their sides & back, turning around, moving left and right, 'raising their hands like they just don't care' like it was a rap concert or something with lots of pushing & shoving.

That video is a great example of why PJ shows should not be GA... those douchebags need to be confined to their seats.

    agreed. :(

I love Canada. I love being Canadian. But Canadian concert goers are often douches. Either too obnoxious or too quiet.

(Although, Buffalo fans are f'in annoying too.)

ed said he loved the buffalo crowd saying something like "who knew buffalo could be so beautiful"

and most canadians live so close to the boarder for a reason...
  • Song was as lifeless live as it was on the studio version. No jam, just a canned pop song. They will be bored with this song before Philly is done.

The crowd in Halifax when we got to see A Perfect Circle was pretty sweet! Not this kind of behavior.
I miss APC with a passion.
  • sounds good, can't wait for the boots. As for the piano, it doesn't sound like piano to me on the single. Unless someone has soon credits that lists someone playing piano on that track.....

the tuning-down took a little life out of it i think.. but then again, this was the first time playing it, and the first show of the tour.. a couple months from now, when the band has hit their stride, it could be a lot better.

Let me give the final verdict on this crowd.

I was front/centre against the rail. An hour before PJ was set to come on, everyone started filtering out of the beer gardens and VIP, which were positioned perfectly so that the emerging drunks would surge and push the crowd forward towards the stage. Luckily I was on Mike's side of the security space in front, so I was protected for the most part from the initial squeeze. But looking over the security pit (about five feet) I could see guys and girls who literally couldn't breathe because they were so squished. One girl wanted out but the security guys could've pull her because she was jammed b/n people.

Once the show started it was a bit easier for people to climb out because of the movement of the crowd, and most people that came out could barely walk on their own. For the most part I was clear from all the D-bags because I was at the front and with mostly hardcore Pearl Jam fans, but the douches weren't far behind me, and a lot of them floated over my head.

The crowd in the 'pit', overall, was ridiculous. The guys in the video aren't even paying attention to the band. I fully understand I chose to go to a GA show, but I'd rather not have to worry about defending my life while I'm standing in front of Ed. And the reason you only really see guys is because every girl I saw was fighting for her life to get the hell out of there.

Kudos to the band, though, for feeding off the energy but doing their best to keep everyone alive. The show was awesome.
