I was at night one in '06, and I don't remember the crowd being lame. :?
yah i have nothing but fond memories from that night and '03 (my first show)... so my pro "rock the fuck out" stance isnt in response to any past chicago shows... i just like to rock the fuck out
i think were all starving for some new PJ right now... i have no doubt these shows will be totally explosive
There were people not even cheering when songs were over, arms folded. People just sat down during the encore.
It was strange.
that is stupid. there are some songs I really like to soak in but i mostly like to rock..I don't think my wife will be rocking like I will be since my obsession with pearl jam is driving her nuts but at least she is going.....bring on Aug. 23
I don't like to move a whole lot, but I dunno how anybody can stay still at a concert. Are people too uptight that they can't just let go and get lost in the music? Shows, esp PJ, are a huge emotional release for me.
These Chicago shows have a lotta meaning to me, so lame fans better not screw it up.
It's going to be my first show. I'm going in planning on having a life changing experience.
But my experience isn't deterred by the actions of the crowd around me. If they aren't into it, so what? I didn't go to people gaze, I went to watch Pearl Jam. I'm not going to let a few sour apples ruin it for me. Although I would much more prefer to sing all the songs with my peer around me, I won't be bugged out if it doesn't happen.
Again, it's about the Pearl Jam experience, not the crowd.
... just cause someone isnt moving doesnt mean they are not into it... everyone experiences something different... some people might be "on" certain things... so instead of going insane and jumpin around... the music actually penetrates you and you wont wanna move... other people might be sloppy drunk... and will be hyper as hell at first and than a retarded, puking mess before the first encore... to each's own
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...
obviously people are gonna do what they want... fair enough... but its a pretty one sided argument IMO... theres a reason the band loves playing italy so much... maybe we just need to have GA in the US again
For two 10c tickets to either or both shows, I'll act however you'd like at the concert. Jump, yell, scream, you name it. Just get me there.
-Pearlhawk.
maybe you should go with the route of in the building, find a couple singles from each night and get them, them meet up after the show and compare experiences
If you have ten club tickets for both Chicago shows, please, for the love of all that is holy, please do not stand stock still in the lower section during the show.
If you don't recall it was the apathetic Chicago show-goers that POed the band during the last tour. Regardless of how they shake up the seating or your rank and seniority this time, don't just stand there looking bored.
I've been flamed before because of this stance by some who say "don't tell us how to enjoy a show" meaning they like to soak up the music and really concentrate. OK, maybe I buy that, but let's hope that is the few. You don't need to mosh or anything but I'd really like more energy down there this time out. And feel free to voice your opinions below, but don't say I'm wrong for having mine.

About 40+ shows. Let's enjoy these!
Everyone does their own thing at shows - I express myself by smiling to myself and bobbing my head up and down to the music. I don't jump, I don't move, I just stand - and that works for me! The best way to get people to act the way you want them to in terms of expressing their excitement, is probably just to practice what you preach, and watch those around you follow your lead!
I think the best idea...
Is for everyone to mind their own damn business and worry about themselves....
Why the fuck would someone even be paying attention to how others are acting??? There is a band on stage...
Pay attention to the band..........
I agree.

why anyone would focus on anything other than what is going on,
at every second, on that stage is truly beyond me.
as long as we wait, as much as we plead, as many pennies and vacation days
that we save, my focus is on the band, and only the band for those two hours
that i get only every couple of years.
I was at Chicago 03 too, and compared to the other shows I saw that week in St. Paul at Alpine, it was my least favorite. I'm not exactly sure what it was, but the combo of horrible traffic making me miss Idlewild, being 20 rows back on the floor and not being able to see well, and maybe the setlist made it almost forgetable.
As another native Chicago person, I agree 100% with the original post. Anyone who was at Grand Rapids in 2006 knows how bad the crowds were at the United Center that year. The difference was night and day... and the band seemed to be enjoying themselves more and even commented on the crowd being better than Chicago.
I really hope we finally get another Alpine Valley show in 2010 because those seem to have a better feel to them (even when its twenty-some degrees outside!). But for now all we can do is hope that Chicago steps up and fills the United Center with its best crowd yet. I think it will help having more die hard 10 clubbers from out of town there than we usually do. What is so difficult about showing the band some love during a concert?

I tend to think that if you're standing, singing along at the top of your lungs, and clapping after every song--that's all any band asks for. Not everyone is the jump up and down type, or whatnot. I know that I have enjoyed all 31 shows I've been to, and they are cherished memories to me. So really, you never know who's having the time of their lives!
But..you wanna talk about shit crowds---Detroit(Pine Knob) 2003. TC members got screwed on seats, thus sporatic spots throughout the pavilion. Venue season ticket holders held onto their seats in the front, most sat for ALL the songs and didn't recognize any but the bigger radio hits. That was a disgrace to Detroit(where I'm originally from), and the band.
Those '03 Pine Knob shows not only had the season-ticket holder situation going against it, but IIRC the 10C was also using that asinine ticket block "first-come-first-served" distribution method on that tour. My seats that first night weren't bad (but not horrible), but there were a TON of obnoxious drunks around us (I can say that because while I like to get drunk, I'm never obnoxious ).
Oh man. I had a broken collar bone last time I saw them at United Center.I hope my stillness didn't piss them off. Now i feel bad. No broken bones this time(knock on wood) and sirs, I will be letting loose. I might even let it all go when Bad Religion comes out, who knows.
i plan on standing with my back to the stage and looking at the bulls championship banners and Michael jordans retired number banner the whole show!
thats why i got a ticket!
Dane Cook was sold out.
Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked... in the head... with an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does. It never happens. Sorry, Ted, that's a dumb question... skip that.
Man I hate this train of thought. Crowd interaction and movement IS the environment of the show, and thus what other people are doing affects my experience. Now that might sound selfish, but get off your ass and show some energy!
Music is very important to white people. It truly is the soundtrack to their lives, meaning that white people are constantly thinking about what songs would be on the soundtrack for the biopic. The problem is that most of the music that white people like isn’t really dance-friendly. More often the songs are about pain, or love, or breaking up with someone, or not being able to date someone, or death.
So when white people go to concerts at smaller venues, what to do they do? They stand still! This is an important part of white concert going as it enables you to focus on the music, and it will prevent drawing excess attention to you. Remember, at a concert everyone is watching you just waiting for you to try to start dancing. Then they will make fun of you.
The result is Belle and Sebastian concerts that essentially looks more like a disorganized line of people than a music event.
If you find yourself invited to a concert with a white person, do NOT expect to dance. Prepare yourself for three hours of standing reasonably still. It is also advised to get a beer or (if legal) a cigarette so you have something to do with your hands. Although it is acceptable to occasionally raise one hand and point just above the stage.
Note: the addition of the drug ecstasy changes everything.
i usually annoy people with my jumping around..its lose lose around here
I hear you: I wasn't at the Chicago shows, but I did feel self-conscious about bobbing around next to the girl playing a game of Statue next to me at the Mansfield show last year. Oh well! I don't think I'm obnoxious, I guess I just move a little bit (I didn't bump her!)
To those at the Pine Knob shows...I saw 2 shows in MI a few years ago and the crowd was dead. Then I got a beer dumped down my back. I really wish I had enjoyed shows in my hometown!! :(

Dont tell me how to act at a show.
I am with Speedy on this one. Pay attention to the band, not what people around you are or aren't doing.

This is the comment from the OP that I fully support.
