    OK a few listens later.

I like the music even though it is 80s with the keyboard and the hand-claps and "yeah, yeah, yeah". And I like the ending section, the last minute or so. It is catchy and upbeat and that's fine. You can tap your foot along to it and not try to get some deeper meaning out of it. They can be upbeat and happy when they want and do it quite well. "Down" for example.

But I can't get past the lyrics. This has to be their weakest effort ever lyrically. Better lyrics would make this song so much more. But it has some of the clunkiest, corniest, goofiest lines I have ever heard.

Oh, and so far I have only hear this, Got Some, and The End and those two are infinitely superior so I still have very high hopes for Backspacer.

Just listened to it for the first time...

Not horrible, but very much not good.

    Incredibly repetitive, cheesy lyrics....
The song has no direction. During the listen I though "ok, maybe this will lead somewhere..." only to have another series of cheeseball lyrics in the EXACT same pattern as before.

    Ugh.

The only other PJ song I can compare it to would be Unemployable, and it's not nearly as good as Unemployable.
I was pretty rough on Got Some when they played it on Conan, but I'm thinking Got Some has this beat too.

The song lyrically reminds me of Wishlist a bit......I really can't judge most if not all Pearl Jam songs until I hear them live. I just feel Pearl Jams songs have a completely different vibe live as apposed to the studio version.

How could “The Fixer” ever live up to the hype?
It’s understandable to be under whelmed by the song.
It is after all new Pearl Jam…I remember hearing Corduroy for the first time wondering “What the Fuck is This Shit?

There was so much and hype and anticipation surrounding this date July 20th.

Diehard fans have been collectively whipping themselves into a lunatic frenzy over the last couple of months, drooling over every piece of leaked information surrounding “Backspacer” -the album- and The Fixer –the single- Once it was reported that Brendon O’Brien was back behind the boards tweaking the sounds, wild dreams of Yield, No Code, and Vitalogy-like masterpieces stared swarming the brain.

With this kind of expectation, it kind of puts a song in a very precarious position…Truthfully, It’s almost unfair.

What is immediately apparent is that this song is quite a departure for Pearl Jam.
“The Fixer” chugs along with a hooky melody and verse that wouldn’t be out of place in an 80’s New Wave song. What makes it most strange is that It follows a basic verse, chorus, verse structure that is rather foreign to this band; especially when you find out that it was written by Matt Cameron who is known more for writing some of the bands most angular and abstract songs like “Evacuation”.

You’d be very hard pressed to find a Pearl Jam song in the last 15 years that has dared to be this immediately digestible.

This may eventually give “Betterman a run for its money in regards to the title of Pearl Jam’s most radio friendly song.

The Chorus of “The Fixer” seriously get’s into your head and doesn’t let go; it’s very hard not to tap your feet and sing along to “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” part; it definitely has that windows down, summertime vibe to it.

For any other band this kind of blatantly catchy songwriting would be hardly surprising. But for Pearl Jam it’s bound to turn a few heads.

It’s hard to believe that this is the same band that could turn around and bust out “Sleight of Hand” or “Nothing as it Seems” in concert.

But after all, it’s these two extremes that make Pearl Jam such an amazingly interesting band.
