But what if someone got banned for being accussed of a racist rant, or something else that could damage their reputation? Even if the mods posted a vague reason for a banning, people would start discussions that could show the banned person in a bad light.
omg your taking things to the extreme, ok for the pearl jam board they wouldnt have to include a reason as to why the person got banned, ok? we probably arent going to see a banned list any time soon on here so it doesnt matter anyways. they work on other boards and its a easy way to find out where people are when they go missing. you would be surprised how many times the ban is "self imposed". ive never heard of any legal action being taken againt the boards that use them.

You'd be surprised how much more/less can be spent on insurance by not taking/taking certain precautions.
Sorry. I guess the news today just came as a big shock. I have not always been such a big follower of the board. This summer, I have started to follow it a lot. I started to feel like I knew some of the people on here and was excited to see what would be on each day. And..I did get a DVD...of one of the shows I have seen. And my friend and I were able to sit down a couple of days ago and relive that night. More than anything, It made us excited about seeing PJ in the future, and their new album, and made us talk about our long following of this band...and it was great. I was thinking how nice it is that the band realizes the importance of sharing their music through any way that is available. I guess I was naive to think that it was as free as I thought it was. I realize that there are rules, and I realize that we signed a agreement when joining the board that said that we would follow them... And I also realize that something that seems to good to be true probably is. Now I know what is ok and what is not on the board...Like I said I was naive and did not know the extent of it. I was living in this PJ utopia..oops.
I'm in the same boat as you. I just (inadvertently) figured this stuff out today. I hope I didn't contribute to this, but I may have :(:(. Just to add one more thing - I have bought every official DVD that has ever been made. Some of them, I bought on both VHS and DVD.

9. Trading PJ shows even-up, ok. Bootlegging (selling), not ok. Offering to buy bootlegs, not ok. Links to bootlegger sites, not ok. 2 for 1 trades is making profit, not ok. Scalping, not ok. Offering to pay any price for a ticket is inviting scalpers. Not ok.
I don't see DVDs specifically mentioned anywhere in this or any of the other rules and I think that the banning of people for trying to share something with the PJ community that is readily available pretty much anywhere on the net is just mean! Some people are just nice by nature (like LF and D, and many others here and on the "other" board that will remain nameless for the sake of protecting them from banning) and banishing them from here just for being themselves is wrong!
I don't know one B+P/Trader that has ever asked for 1 cent for a copy of anything they have. These people have always traded or given away copies freely and I'm still not quite clear on how this rule applies.
I, like most people on here, have bought every single copyrighted PJ show out there and will continue to do so. I even drove an hour and a half to Boston to see Immagine on the big screen and bought the copy from 10C, yet I own well over 100 shows that I could have chosen to watch in my own home. I can't see how this is about $$$, I think 10C and the band knows that the hardcore fans a) will buy pretty much any DVD/CD they put out and b) will probably be the only ones aware of said DVD's being available.
I just can't see how a band that is so lenient with their camera policy (like they don't know 99.9% of digital cameras include a video recorder!) can just "off" people like that. :(

You know the famous story about Uncle Neil going into the record store and taking back the bootlegs they were selling there, right? Everyone knows that story, esp. hardcore PJ fans.
Like it or not, bands have a right to control their art. If PJ considers a digital still photograph OK, or ignores the fact that some of their fans might take 30 second long videos with their camera... but doesn't consider a full length pirated DVD to be on the same level, we have to respect that.

I am not into the cd trading and all of that, so I guess that would not apply to me. But the thing that I have noticed is that a lot of those (what I now refer to as) "baited threads" are the ones that go on to ask questions about really contraversial subjects like faith or politics or political parties, etc. and then when you answer an answer that disagrees with them, they BAM!BAM! whack you over the head with the superior bs , "I am more informed than you, and more inteliigent than you, so therefore, your opinion that means nothing at all is one based on being stupid."
Then I notice that I do not see these people here a lot anymore. I thought either they got banned or they just got fed up with all of us stupid people.
I am sorry they got banned but there have been times when I first got on here that I would want to stick up for my beliefs and then sounded just as bad as they did (for me and my standards I guess,---that might be lighter than others.........), but then I noticed it right away and stopped myself after I apologized .........
I guess it amazes me when other people do not know when they are being asses to others...I always know.....and then (I hope) I always apologize.

agreed. nowhere in those "rules" is there anything about dvds. yea, yea "videos are a touchy subject here" and blah blah but NOWHERE in the guidelines of the board does it mention it.
rule 9 mentions trading bootlegs, which is what these are. neither of the two profited anything from it (in fact they were losing money by giving them out for free) not in no way shape or form did they break any of the guidelines.
Too many good posters have disappeared and others are participating less.

Ok, it is now mentioned in the Posting Guidelines for those who were not aware of the many previous announcements over the years when a show/tour is announced. Pearl Jam fans are very intelligent people and when it is repeated over and over again that the band does not ok videotaping of their shows, it is just understood that DVDs are not ok.
We'll go over the Posting Guidelines again and make sure now that every little thing is in there so there can be no misunderstandings. Our respect for everyone here, and knowing that everyone respects the band's wishes, is ultimately boundless. We want everyone to have fun, fun, and more fun. Now please continue with the fun part.

Kat,
Thanks for doing this. Based on our recent exchange, I think this is a helpful thing to do to help set the rules straight. While it may seem obvious to you and to the masses, I think there were some that might have been caught up and swept away by the wave that was open trading just a few short months ago. While it was against the band's wishes back then, I think people saw it as okay since there were so many doing it in the open. While this doesn't make it right, it certainly can be easy to not see the seriousness of the offense if it is going on in the open with little or no repercussions. Now that it is a clearly posted rule, there should be no confusion.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
For those who scoff at "Jamily" in my name... 9 years ago, when my first daughter was born there were jokes about whether my priority would be my family or PJ. I smiled and quipped "I am a JamilyMan." What was a family joke became a hated term among jammers. Didn't see that one coming!

Kat, Thanks for coming here and leting us know you here what is being said. As many poeple stated the rules on DVD's is a little fuzzy. Though I don't trade bootlegsor dvd's, I do trade posters. Please post the wishes of the band a little clearer and we all can have fun and follow the rules on dvd's. I'm sure you see poeple being ask etc about 10c poster's all the time. That might start with DVD's now. Thanks alot Kat. Later Yostarama

There was no open trading of DVDs here ever...and there were repercussions when they were found. We try to not be heavy-handed and we usually privately warn so as to not embarrass people who are not aware - and we don't like banning people...but the rules are known so it's like some people ban themselves when they make a choice that isn't ok. The posts are always removed. If you are aware of any now, please use the Report to Mod feature and we'll take care of them right now. Thank you.

While it wasn’t posted on the rules I don’t think there was ever a question or fuzziness on the DVD bootlegs, there are tons of DVDs out there for many many shows and the reason why you never see threads with trades for those its because it has never been ok to trade them or offer them as B+P.
The band it’s always been open about them not being ok with the videotaping of their shows but that’s not from now though its been like that since I can remember.
(or maybe I just spend way to much time on that board - )

I also appreciate Kat clarifying things. I always have been disappointed that there are so many fans think ing it is okay to make videos of the shows when the band has been clear (IMO) regarding their wishes. I have been impressed with how much the band gives back to their fans (official boots, fan-club only shows, frequent touring and official DVDs), but I guess for some its still not enough :P

as new board members cycle in, it's up to the rest of the board members to help spread the word about which topics are either open for discussion or considered taboo on the forums.
i, for one, would like to contribute the following peace of advice:
the "Search" button is your friend when looking to see if a topic has already been discussed, it's always helpful to "Bump" up a previous post as opposed to creating a new one for the same topic, and last but not least, when all else has failed just remember:
it's Stone's fault!

Yeah if this is now understood and everyone can play by the rules I think D and LukinFan should be allowed to rejoin us. They are amazing people and I would hate to think of them not a part of it. I know its not the norm Kat but a lot of people feel this way. They are friends to this board and would NEVER intentionally hurt the band in any way.

30second long video clips from a digital camera? um mine isn't that good and it can do entire songs and if i had an extra memory card and battery with me, um, well...

Finally got that "One for the Thumb"!!! Got the "Six Pack". Now we're on a "Stairway to Seven"

as new board members cycle in, it's up to the rest of the board members to help spread the word about which topics are either open for discussion or considered taboo on the forums.
i, for one, would like to contribute the following peace of advice:
the "Search" button is your friend when looking to see if a topic has already been discussed, it's always helpful to "Bump" up a previous post as opposed to creating a new one for the same topic, and last but not least, when all else has failed just remember:
it's Stone's fault!
