agreed w/ the too short comment...even the wife said: 'that's it? that's only 40 minutes!'. I had to agree w/ her. good episode though. i'm so tempted to go back and watch episode 1-4 just to rework my brain but i'm sure i'll have plenty of time to do that in the years to come. still waiting for the 'Bastogne' of this series and I feel it's coming.
I love to turn you on

I wish they did a better job developing the secondary characters but I guess because they are following three people it is difficult.

I have to assume that now that Leckie is hurt we won't see much of him and we'll focus on Sledge the rest of the way. Which is too bad i realy liked leckie.

Has anyone read the memoirs? I think i've going to read them, but i was wondering which i should read first
    Sledge's- With the Old Breed
    or
    Leckie's- Helmet for my PIllow

Anyone who has read them can you offer which you enjoyed more and why?

Last night's episode was great but next week (episode 7) has potential to be the best so far. I am thorougly enjoying this series and have to say I like it more than Band of Brothers.

With the Old Bread - was that Sledge's cookbook? ;)

I agree, I want to read their books now. The last two episodes were insane. Up until then you hardly saw a GI get killed but crap, they were just getting wasted at Peleliu. :( I'd say that beach landing on Part 5 was more intense than D Day on Saving Private Ryan.

I have read With the Old Breed. Definitely recommend it. It is probably the easiest to read military history books I have ever picked up because Sledge tells everything from his point of view. He goes into the details of a Marine's life in that war that no one else covers. From the food to the bugs to the mud and maggots and corpses and even how difficult going to the bathroom was. Peleliu was bad enough but his experience on Okinawa was enough to make anyone want to kill themselves just to be relieved of it.

Leckie seems a lot more cynical and jaded even before going into the war. Sledge was more naive and innocent. A lot of his book talks about his moral dilemma when it comes to killing. And struggling to maintain his sanity in unimaginable situations. Sledge also wasn't a professional writer.

It is virtually apolitical. Just a Marine telling a story about his time on the ground in two of the most horrible battles of war rather than boring you with the plans of a general or an admiral, etc.

Sledge also reminds you of the odds. Despite what most people think very, very few front line soldiers or Marines lived through the war. I mean all the way through, as in signing up in 1941 and fighting in every campaign along the way. Sledge landed on Okinawa with 253 men and officers in his company. During the battle they took on 240 or so replacements. By the end, only 26 of the original 253 were left. And of those, only 10 had survived Peleliu. I mean, think about that! It was different than it is now. There were now tours of duty or anything like that. You were in, and you stayed in until you were killed, wounded, or the war ended. He explains that no matter how much training or discipline you possessed, death was completely random.

He does his best to put you in his place. Until I read his book I had no idea that the Marines and Japanese at Okinawa had to sit in the rain for weeks, suffer from all kinds of diseases and infections, couldn't bury their dead, wash, eat, etc. Didn't know that on Peleliu, you couldn't even dig a small hole for a latrine because the entire island was coral rock. Or that is was 105 degrees and their water was contaminated with diesel fuel. It was a really eye-opening book. Even for someone who considers himself somewhat knowledgeable about it.

Very cool. Thank you for the recap.
I have a feeling I might like Leckie’s more. I like his character a lot on the show.
I think I’m going to go with Sledge’s though and then probably read Leckie’s after that.

    That does look pretty cool.

I picked up with the old breed last night and have read up to the point where he goes into combat. Pretty good so far and a very easy read. Everything comes across as very honest.

Yea I agree very intense and maybe the best episode so far. Battle of Iwo Jima is coming up next. Will see how that goes.

That scene with Sledge and the the nurse with the orange juice was intense . I can't imagine the nightmares these boys/men had after it was all over.

Yeah, easily the best episode of the series. I think it was very effective in trying to show us what it must have been like to go through that hell for 30+ days and nights. I mean, just imagine that. You could see Sledge slowing starting to lose it as the days drug on. I don't know how anyone could ever come to grips with living through something like that.

And just think, his experience on Okinawa was even more horrible.

Watching this series has gotten me thinking about the horrors of war. The fact that it is a soldier's job to kill the enemy in order to meet military objectives is so difficult to fathom. Imagine having to deal with the images of seeing your colleagues killed or the images of killing an enemy soldier point blank.

Even more shocking is the fact that most of the soldiers were under the age of 20.

    Very powerful stuff!
