Did anyone see the trailer for this last night on HBO before True Blood? It's a 10 part miniseries coming in March 2010 about the Marines involvement in the Pacific Theatre of WWII. Battles of Pelelieu, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima are highlighted. I personally loved Band of Brothers and am highly anticipating this one. Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg.

I'm excited for the miniseries but my first impression is it's more "Hollywood" than Band of Brothers. Doesn't seem to have the same gritty, shaky camera work and looks like they're trying to incorporate the tried and true Hollywood love story/war story formula. I look forward to more trailers.

I haven't seen the preview, but from what I have read about this it could be really good. My only real worry is that Band of Brothers was based on real guys, Winters, Nixon, Sobel and the rest were all real people so and those episodes were based on their real experiences in Europe. That meant you really couldn't hollywood the story up to much to make it more like a movie. With The Pacific, from what I understand it is based on fictional characters, so the writers can pretty much have them do whatever they want.

It is actually based on a true story. Or rather, stories because it is an adaptation of the memoirs "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge and "Helmet for My Pillow" by Robert Leckie. The Pacific will tell the tales of these two men as well as a couple of others and their experiences in the Pacific War.

Yes, that looks very good. I plan to watch it.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

Did anyone catch World War II in HD on the History Channel a couple of months ago? It is amazing to me that so much never before seen footage continues to emerge. And all of this footage is in color.

I think it was a great idea to lead in to The Pacific with Band of Brothers. That mini series never gets old. I've probably watched the entire series four times and read the book, which was just an outstanding read.

Now that I've watched the "making of" The Pacific and read a little more into it I'm really looking forward to it. It will definitely be on my DVR schedule. From the looks of it they really took a no holds barred approach, which was lacking in pretty much every other WWII film about the war in the Pacific. The mindset on both sides was more like pure hatred than the fair amount of respect the Germans and Americans had for each other.

Reading With the Old Breed now in preparation for this. Wow. I just can't comprehend what these people went through. Just unbelievable.
