While I have been critical of this situation as well, I do think some pause is needed to remember why we (most of us) come on here. And that is the music. This other stuff is the business side of the industry, that we the fans helped create. A lot of us download on here...a lot of us distribute material, whether official releases or otherwise, and we do so with no regard to the ramifications of it. And as Kat alluded to, information getting out that is false, will still circulate even when the whole story is known. But for me..this topic isn't about the Target information...I could care less about that..in fact I applaud the band for doing the multi partner thing...its forward thinking and I believe the way it should be done. But micro managing the blogosphere for fan recorded material is a little out character, and I think unnecessary. Nowadays, something going viral is the key to getting material out there, and for that to happen, you need the fans to seed it. Personally, I think that whenever the first single is prepped for release, the band should plant it at various sites as though it got out early..and let the fanbase throw it around...it creates buzz, excitement, the feeling that we stumbled upon some news that we spend way to much time poking around for anyway. Do it on your own terms and what is out of control can be somewhat 'in control' if you know what I mean. So don't crap on a blog for hosting a crappy fan recorded mp3 of a song that is building excitement and word of mouth. Embrace it and then you will see the true value of what a rabid fanbase can provide. Otherwise, don't do a video for target and hire in anyone but workers for the band who have been strip searched...because nowadays..its going to get out there.

I just want to say that the long-time fans know how the band is about Sound Quality. As musicians, it is a top priority for them. How could it not be? They even went so far as to redo their first album because they didn't like the sound. They did their own bootlegs for live shows so they could make sure their music had good sound. It means a lot to them....please don't ever forget that. They want their art presented in the best possible way with great sound, good art, live shows, lots of fun for everyone for the event too.

    xo

Can we demand late night talk shows to have even moderately adequate sound abilities then.

Now can we have what you said as a sticky, to stop all of this? And can we have better communication so it doesn't get to this point in the future? It's not an unrealistic thing to ask for. Please?

It always comes but it comes when it's ready and it shouldn't come sooner. You don't eat an apple pie that's half-baked, do you? The fruit must first be gently washed and peeled and lovingly sliced and diced and the dough created with the perfect ratio of ingredients so that it will be a flaky masterpiece cradling the fruit and complimenting each tasty bite. It's art...like anyone's job can be if we try.

And you know that everyone involved wants you all to enjoy and savor every tasty morsel for as long as it can last.

    xo

The communication from the ten club to the fans still sucks. Any chance that is going to improve Kat?

    sigh....
I wrote this big long-winded response to this thread (basically saying 'give them the benefit of the doubt')...but now I see Kat's come along and made most of my points moot.

Sooooo....I'll throw in my 2c to say that I think it's GREAT to see Kat discussing some of this with us :) Hopefully the start of more good things to come...

(and, at risk of sounding like a total ass-kisser, I'd also like to say that you (Kat) should post more often on ANY topic....always eloquent and well presented; a pleasure to read ;) )

edit: waaaaaait a minute. This is the wrong thread  Kat's derailment screwed me up. I thought this was one of the Target threads.

Ok, I just have to state a few points. First off, I love all of you guys regardless of your opinions. There's not a one of you that I wouldn't truly enjoy sitting with, having a beer, and discussing music, and learning something from. Except that one guy...just kidding. We're all here because, at some point, we had a transporting ethereal experience with this band's musical contribution to our lives, let's not forget that.

Secondly, there's two things you never want to know in this life: one, is what goes on in the business/legal realm behind our favorite band, and two, what sausage is made of. Vegetarians already understand this ;-) I don't want to know about what happens between any corporation and this band, what is the exact nature of tour negotiations with venues, or how much and how money is distributed to all the people that make this circus possible. I just want to hear their music.

As a person who loves to give and create, I understand fully the concept of not wanting to reveal a project until it is finished. I also understand, however, that this is a brave new world we are living in and information is so much more of a currency and it is moving at such a speed that we are all still trying to figure it out. I see both sides, because I was one of those grommets that thought I had discovered the holy grail when sites like 5 Horizons started keeping me up to the minute with setlists and sound bites, but I also think that until the band lets go of what they feel is a finished product, it is still very much in their keeping to do with as they wish. Once it is released, it is our job to meet the art halfway and have our own emotional response.

Lastly, Pearl Jam has always revered the artistic medium of the album as a complete form and that is dying if not almost dead already in the world of the .99 cent single. If you think they put care into setlists, imagine how much energy they put into tracklisting such an immutable form as the album. Again, though, it goes both ways for me. I've said it before, but I would love to hear an album or even a live performance comprised entirely of unheard music, as I trust the band to take me on an incredible journey that way. That said, I also miss the days of hearing songs like whipping and sonic reducer live first and then hearing the recorded studio version later. It did nothing to diminish my love for them.

So, to summarize, I don't want to try and answer any big questions about these things- everyone is doing a great job of figuring out where they stand and expressing it in a (mostly) constructive and respectful manner. I guess without placating, I can just truly say that I am once again proud to be a fan of this band amongst so many great thoughtful and expressive people. I am so excited for this new album and hopefully even some more visual offerings/presentations of this band's work that I can't hardly stand it!

Peace out my friends, and keep on keeping it on

I agree, it's nearly impossible to keep information control within control nowadays! But the reality is, that PJ is just so big, so many fans, that keeping info under wraps seems to be more impossible than possible! Rather than fight it and just delete info that shouldn't be there, there must be a different, healthier approach...I just don't know what it would be.

BTW, Kat - thanks so much for talking to us like you are. We all appreciate it! :)

this is their official board, no? so shouldn't at the very least they be 'allowed' to try and control information presented HERE as they deem appropriate? obviously, they cannot control other sites, etc.....except try to end/curb illegal activity, but even 10/pj must realize it's impossible to control it ALL...but at least HERE, their own website, i think it perfectly acceptible for them to do so. that seems a 'healthy approach' to me.
I disagree that simply being deletion happy with the posts on here WITHOUT specifying why they're doing it, is a good form of communication. If they also mentioned why they were deleting, it would be another story.

I had no idea what was going on until I clicked on this thread today...couldn't read all of the posts because like one person said it drains a lot out of you with so much emotions involved and I don't have all the information to share my opinions but I think a lot has already been said.

I appreciate most of the dicussion taken in a civil manner because it is easier for readers outside who were not even involved to understand what's going on without getting emotional/personal/defensive, or to even attack.

    sorry to see this happening...

thank you...the whole discussion gets so circular after awhile.
IF a thread or post is deleted, you have your answer....always...within the posting guidelines. it really is quite simple, straightforward. do we all so need instant gratification/attention that we deem it worthy for EVERY post or topic that is deleted we get a personal message of explanation? really? i know this is an all-ages forum, but i thought most of us were gorwn-ups. ;) the deletion IS the message, no? :P

the 'good communication' is simply when they DO have something to share, that they WANT to share, when they think it is READY to share....on THEIR timetable, they do so. tis the nature of the relationship between band/fanclub and fans. and believe me, i don't think the good communication always occurs - especially for tourdates ;)....but for all else, it's their music, their call, their messageboard...so i think it's absolutely up to them the how, why, when and where to share their info with us here.

it absolutely is getting out of hand now....just not perhaps in the way the OP meant.

Sheesh D2D, thanks for the attitude, I know what the guidelines say.

But it's been absolutely crazy here the last few days with the numerous threads being deleted, some for no reason (the last Albany pre-party thread). Way to back up the guidelines, what I'm doing is saying that aside from rules, it would be nice to actually feel a little human presence from 10c instead of a "big brother" taking over as that's the way things were. Actual communication is not "delete, see guidelines". There is nothing wrong with questioning. Nothing.

And Kat was already on here explaining things, it was really nice to hear what she had to say.

if you sense attitude, tis your inference and was not my intention.
while i missed this most current deletion frenzy, i have seen plenty of others in the past...and it's always the same thing. and i don't think ANYwhere i have ever implied that questioning is a bad thing, not at all. we simply do not see this issue in the same light, at all. and definitely different perspectives b/c i DO very much feel a 'human presence' in the 10c, anytime i deal with them. this is a message board, i don't expect the mods to come on and explain, and reexplain the 'why's of their actions....b/c as they continually link us, it's basically in the posting guidelines. if this is their official board, and how they want to officially handle things...i am a-ok with that. you are not. cool. no one said to stop questioning......merely weighing in with my own opinions on the topics.

    tho i do agree...always appreciate kat's posts.

while i wouldn't say they 'worry' me...i just wonder why, briefly, anyway. it IS great fun when the whole 'censorship' issue comes up tho, time and again, b/c clearly...some people don't truly understand what freedom of speech really is about. :) and believe me, pearl jam is "important" to me in that i love their music, i love seeing them live, i love the community, etc.....but yes, not so much that i will get up in arms over happenings here. c'est la vie.....takes all kinds, and that's what makes it so interesting reading/participating.
