KRAKÓW - travel tips and other info

I’ll be doing the Prague-Kraków-Berlin stretch of shows. I know there are a lot of us doing that stretch, so I thought it would be helpful to start a thread to share ideas about Kraków (hotels, neighborhoods, pre-party locations, etc.) There’s already a great thread for Prague, but I didn’t see anything for Kraków. I’ve never been to Kraków, but hopefully we have some folks on here who can share their experience and advice.

Any tips on hotels, areas of the city to focus on, pre-party locations, etc?

Stayed in Hotel Wyspianski a couple of times. Maybe not the nicest hotel but very affordable and only a 2 minute walk from the main square. Would definitely recommend it.

Also Krakow is a beautiful city and worth taking time to explore. But if you also have time to visit the salt mines, definiely make the trip!

There's a restaurant in Kazimierz that serves the best Horseradish Vodka. I'll have to try and remember the name.

Me and my wife have been thinking about it. Leaving to Berlin on the Ryanair flight at 9:15pm, so plenty of time.

I’m taking the same flight. I’m definitely considering a day trip to Auschwitz on the 4th - just trying to figure out how best to maximize my sightseeing time that day.

I booked seats on the direct Ryanair flights between Prague, Kraków and Berlin. That’s definitely the quickest option, but prices have been going up very quickly. Trains are an option, but Prague-Kraków and Kraków-Berlin are both 9+ hour journeys. Some folks are also looking to organize a chartered bus between the three cities: http://community.pearljam.com/discussion/268070/info-prague-krakow-berlin-bus#latest

I was there last summer. The tour of Auschwitz was roughly 2 hours and then we spent another hour or 2 at Birkenau. It's a bit of a drive as well from Krakow. If your flight isn't until the evening it should be no problem.

Now I am thinking of grabbing a night bus after the Prague show. Hopefully able to sleep on it and get a Auschwitz/Salt Mine combo tour on July 2nd. This would give me all day on the 3rd to explore Krakow. That would be a long day on the second though especially if I was not able to sleep on the bus. Also I could get some rest to and from the tour I would guess as well as the night of the second.

Organized tours seem to be around 7 - 8 hours in total. They take you to Auschwitz first and then Birkenau (two different camps, close to each other)

Just read that. Seems like it would be cheaper to do yourself but I imagine the benefit of skipping the line and the guided tour would be well worth it. Has anyone done the salt mines? They look like a must do as well.

I'd really like to but I'm unsure if with the buzz of the night before, and the excitement of Berlin, that it will feel right to visit there if you see what I mean. For those of you travelling from further afield (I'm only coming from uk) I understand that you want to pack in as much sightseeing stuff as possible.

Cheers, I might look into that. Hostels are more my thing though. And just 5 minutes ago my learned that I might be able to score a couch with friends. We'll see...

Which neighborhoods are folks targeting for hotels? Tauron Arena seems to be somewhat removed from the main part of the city, and it doesn’t look like there are many hotel options in the immediate vicinity. It looks like it’s about a 10 minute tram ride plus 10-15 minute walk from the old town square to the Arena.

If a bunch of fans are going to do this on showday I may reconsider doing it on the second. This will not allow time for the salt mines though. Lots of decisions to make in the near future.

I just booked the Betmanowska Main Square Residence. It’s pretty central...close enought to the train station and has what looks like a pretty solid pub in it.
