What secret to LedBetter? This is old news.......don't mean to sound like a dick but it is.

Everyone who was at the show was just blown away by the in-person explanation and emotion that went along with it, plus the fact that he actually wanted to answer instead of ignoring it. Yes, it's no secret so maybe the word was misused. But this thread represents the excitement and enthusiasm that people are still feeling from last night's show. So just go along with it (or don't, but you don't have to squash others' excitement).

so at first eddie said he was taken back, and didnt know there actually were lyrics to the song. Than he explained that its about the first gulf war, and a Man, who is retro grunge style, and society looks down on him, and his brother was off at war. At war, the brother dies, and the man recieves a yellow letter from the army stating this. To try n clear his mind, he takes a walk, and sees 2 people on there porch, with a flag waving. So the man sorta salutes them, and the 2 people look donw on him, like he is scum, not knowing he just lost his brother. And with every step the man takes, he feels as if he is falling in an abyss. That is pretty much what eddie stated.

I think the little monologue about the bad review needs to be either quoted on here or posted on youtube. the part about him bein a bad mother fucker with his mandolin was hilarious. i wont sleep until i can put an acurate version of that into my away message. ahhh i cant sleep anyway that show has me spinnin still.

im gonna go play with my new zippo and look at my new tshirt some more, while wishing i had the batman poster.

in my sig is an accurate quote of the one line which cracked me up.

Here is the YL story from "Laura in NJ" Posted on another thread.

"I also took the time to transcribe the whole thing:

Q: What are the words to Yellow Ledbetter?

A: What, that song has lyrics? I guess it’s uh, uh, I don’t remember how it goes. They don’t wave, it’s something about they don’t wave. I see them on the front porch, but they don’t wave. This was during the Gulf War, this is Papa Bush. It was about a guy whose brother went to fight in the first Gulf War, and he was kind of an alternative looking guy, like we were, with our shorts and tights and long hair and whatever we had going on. We were activists, and artists, and good young people in Seattle, and smart people (we weren’t ALL drug addicts, you know). And so it was the story about his brother being killed over there, and then he gets a yellow letter in the mail, that says your brother was killed.

And so he tries to take a walk, he’s walking this off in his little suburban neighborhood, and he’s walking it off, his mind’s racing, he doesn’t know what to do, he feels like he can’t take a step without falling into some deep abyss, and he’s walking and walking, and he sees a couple on a porch with an American flag, he waves to them, like, “you’re my brother,” you know. And then the people look at him like, “You f8ucking scumbag.” You know what I mean? Who are you? They don’t know. They don’t know the inside; they judge him by his cover. That’s what the thought was.

in my 17 years or so of PJ I never once tried to figure out the meaning of this song. Through repeated listening I concluded some ideas naturally, but I think I spent all my energy trying to figure out what the hell he was saying!

This totally changes the song for me in a way, a good way, I think I like it even more now. Next time I am screaming that song at a show I'll feel different about what I am screaming/who I am screaming for.

    Thanks for the credit, Frankie!

FYI I have the entire Yellow Ledbetter story on video (that's how I was able to transcribe it), but since the Third Party seems to be bent on squashing our fun, you'll have to PM me your email and I will send it to you using a Third Party video sending website. I will get to your requests as quickly as I can.

I can't listen to this song with any bit of a good feeling now. Listening to it live and all the enthusiasm just doesn't seem right. It is like everyone cheering happily for No More.

I think the song is way more powerful than it was in terms of not knowing the meaning. But now it pisses me off or saddens me way more than serving as a final farewell at a show. Even if I look at it as a tribute still deosn't work for me

I vote never to close with such a somber song again.
  • the girl next to me was full-on crying by the time he was done...

and by the way, Ed got choked up too.

I think that Ed might tear up at some of the things he talks about (duh!)...but it's hot under those lights...and I swear when people say "it looked like he was crying", he was really just probably sweating...

Anyway, great shit about YL...i'd figured out the dead brother and the yellow letter and the "wish this war away" and people not waving for some reason...as I'm sure many of us had...it had to be a song about loss with the wailing and the hard to understand words..guy's crying...can't quite talk...blubbering...Still, it must have been AMAZING to have actually heard him talk about it...wow... Ed has such a great way of making everyone feel appreciative and ... very fortunate...and special... for sharing his songs and stories with us...that's quite a gift...

Actually his voice really did crack up a little and he paused to compose himself. I don't think there were any tears. Definitely lots of sweat but not as much as in United Palace night 2.
