I'm on a mobile so it's hard to explain it with due credit and meaning but I did not hear even a breath during his explaination.... Someone else will chime it, or just hear it on the boot.

after 17 years, we finally know wat YLB is about. thanks to a drunken fan who shouted "what are the words for yellow ledbetter?"

summing it up the song is about a guy who died in the gulf war and the guys family got a "yellow letter" (get it?) in the mail stating his son died. there was more to it than that but I dont feel like typing a whole story.

Oh and Ed was probably in THE BEST mood tonight. He was talking to the crowd just as much as he was singing.

so at first eddie said he was taken back, and didnt know there actually were lyrics to the song. Than he explained that its about the first gulf war, and a Man, who is retro grunge style, and society looks down on him, and his brother was off at war. At war, the brother dies, and the man recieves a yellow letter from the army stating this. To try n clear his mind, he takes a walk, and sees 2 people on there porch, with a flag waving. So the man sorta salutes them, and the 2 people look donw on him, like he is scum, not knowing he just lost his brother. And with every step the man takes, he feels as if he is falling in an abyss. That is pretty much what eddie stated.

absolutly amazing concert. I was beside people on both sides that were at the 2 NY shows and both said neither compared to tonight. Eddie really let it go tonight, guess he was pissed about the review lol.

The explanation of YL was awsome, it seemed like he almost started crying while telling the story.

I went to NY1, was a good show no doubt, but this just blew it outta the water. So glad I got the tickets and made the trip. Who says you only need to go to one Ed solo show? They are NOT equal. They each have their own "personality" and I'm happy to have seen two different shows in music and mood.
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

I learned more tonight about a pearl jam song then i learned in all of my night at storytellers. Ed's voice did seem to crack a bit when he was telling the story. The vibe to the room reminded me a lot of when Ed talked about Alive during storytellers. Not a sound in the room. Just ed speaking and the audience hanging on to every word.

great night overall. Im so glad i decided to go.

    .

I actually already knew that. It right there in the lyrics (ha!) ... but, really, it is.

That's why it was so cool in '03 or so ... when Ed began singing verses that were a little more "obvious" ... didn't change the subject of the song at all.

Wow! thanks for that. Now I get to listen to this song with a new perspective.

Yeah...I figured as much... that it was in that vain...but to put it into complete focus is pretty fuckin cool.

I'm excited to hear all the live versions again...as well as the original.

The bit about the people on the porch is interesting.

I always pictured those people being the victim's family. The military car pulls up to tell the family their son has been killed ... they see the car pull up ... but they don't wave ... because they already know what's coming. I always pictured that scene in "Saving Private Ryan," where Mrs. Ryan is washing dishes in the sink, and she sees the military car pull up to the house ... and just collapses in agony, because she know what they're there to tell her.

Anyway, I like my interpretation better. Fuck you, Ed. ;)
