OR HOW ABOUT KEITH MOON??????
its a relative answer...Danny Carey is good...but is he better?? Many could debate this for days....lets just say they are all good in their own ways.

While I love Neil Peart, and his studio work is obviously some of the best, I can't consider him the best. And for me, an important part of live music, and drumming, is the ability to improvise.you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.0 -
Buddy Rich has the quickest hands to have ever held a pair of sticks...
C'mon, Danny Carey? I mean he's AMAZING....to say he's the best is just plain ignorant.
I mean he's technical and solid, but seriously, go listen to some Zappa, then come back and comment...
Neil Pert, number 1 on that list, weird....so cliche33...0 -
Didn't Danny take lessons from Pert as a child?

The point of YYZ is not to improvise. You don't 'get' Rush with a statement like that. I've seen him improv before, he can do it.
His solos are pieces of music, not a spur of the moment jam.
I don't consider him the best, but in the realm of rock he is damn near king.
Som jazz guys, obviously, are in a world of their own. Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Lenny White, Steve Smith, Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, etc.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"

Please don't tell me whether or not I "get" Rush. And I wasn't commenting on YZZ in particular, I only quoted you because it was a good indication of what I was talking about. Not the solo, but the rest of the song is exactly the same as the studio version.
Also, I'm not taking anything away from his technical ability, he is a fucking beast. And I get what his solos are about.
But I think improvisation is important. And its known, that he doesn't improvise. To say you've seen him do it makes me think, maybe you don't "get" Rush.you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.0 -
i'm really NOT that knowledgeable when it comes to drummers, but i've always thought that josh freese, keith moon and travis barker were amaaaazing.

Rush is my other favorite band, I've seen them 15 times, I ran a Rush website for years, have tons of bootlegs, lots of memorabilia and have been a fan since I was like 14. I am pretty sure I get Rush.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"

hahaha
I had too , and you mention measage boards, christ I swear this place makes me less knowledgeable on pearl jam, after a few months on here I start thinking about some of the crazy shit that is on here, and confuse it with actual data I read elsewhere.
peace.
I can see both of you know what you like and its obvious you know what your talking about but mike portnoy is better, and yos improvising doesn nothing for me, this is why i like matt and neil better, they stick to their beats pretty much the same way, except in jams, and dont give me the he cant theroy, becasue sometimes in the structure of a rock song, it is good to have consistancy, and ruSH was consistant, and they were more rock than progressive.
And jazz is cool but not in pearl jam, funk either, i mean its cool in spots, but sometimes music doesnot need another fuse in it, like you saud riot act is your favorite, over all that is their simplist album, not a whole lot of fusing togehter of differant sounds or chords. Some people have religion I have Pearl Jam.

Matt improvises all the time.you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.0 -

well try this comon
everyone says dave a was better becasue he inprovised more, and he did, matt sticks to the beats of the songs more than dave did, and neil peart does more than lets say a carter bufrord.
with matt you can always count on a cetain beat to come, with dave they would get lost, and he would hit what was closest
now this is over the course of a song
i have a hard time listening to dave live
matt is so much predidctable, and when pj is busting out a chorus, or a breakdown matts drumming stays consistant commparred to dave. Some people have religion I have Pearl Jam.
