Matt is second best drummer.

Matt can bring it for sure but the best is by far Danny Carey from TOOL. I know youre biased for Matt cause of PJ and all but if you listen and check out some stuff from the internet, you'll see that Danny is the best around. When Danny plays, you KNOW it.

While I love Neil Peart, and his studio work is obviously some of the best, I can't consider him the best. Its a known fact, and if you listen to this, and the studio version of YYZ you'll hear it, he does NO improvisation whatsoever. And for me, an important part of live music, and drumming, is the ability to improvise.
C'mon, Danny Carey? I mean he's AMAZING....to say he's the best is just plain ignorant.
I mean he's technical and solid, but seriously, go listen to some Zappa, then come back and comment...
Neil Pert, number 1 on that list, weird....so cliche
Anyone...???
The point of YYZ is not to improvise. You don't 'get' Rush with a statement like that. I've seen him improv before, he can do it.
His solos are pieces of music, not a spur of the moment jam.
I don't consider him the best, but in the realm of rock he is damn near king.
Som jazz guys, obviously, are in a world of their own. Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Lenny White, Steve Smith, Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, etc.

what he said.
Please don't tell me whether or not I "get" Rush. And I wasn't commenting on YZZ in particular, I only quoted you because it was a good indication of what I was talking about. Not the solo, but the rest of the song is exactly the same as the studio version.
Also, I'm not taking anything away from his technical ability, he is a fucking beast. And I get what his solos are about.
But I think improvisation is important. And its known, that he doesn't improvise. To say you've seen him do it makes me think, maybe you don't "get" Rush.
