For my fellow Jammer / Springsteen fanatics-
tonight is the PBS televised special " Great Performances "
in NY area- its channel 13, 9 PM / Eastern
and features Bruce and The Seeger Sessions Band concert from this past year in London, England . The show is from St Lukes in Londons East End.
http://www.pbs.org/
review from http://www.backstreets.com :
May 9 / London, England / St. Lukes Church
Notes: Not a bad spot for the Seeger Sessions Band's brand of gospel: this show was recorded for the BBC at St. Luke's, an 18th Century church restored by the London Symphony Orchestra as an intimate concert hall. "If they were attempting to give this the atmosphere of a country hoe-down in a village hall, then they more than succeeded," Peter Raymond tells us, "but the sheer exuberance and quality of the performance set it way apart from any local jamboree I've ever been to." BBC DJ Johnny Walker greeted "the luckiest 300 people in the world" -- many of them BBC contest winners, with Emmylou Harris, Stephen Merchant, and the Old Grey Whistle Test's Bob Harris also spotted -- before bringing on Bruce and the band. Springsteen quickly dismissed the riotous applause by joking, "you just practiced that -- it doesn't count!" Bruce and the band set aside original material to focus on the Seeger Sessions songs (plus the "Poor Man" centerpiece) from the main set. "How Can I Keep From Singing" went on despite the fact that "We forgot to bring that friggin' organ... we can't let that stop us, can we?" With retakes of "O Mary" and "Mrs. McGrath," the performance lasted 80 minutes, ending promptly after a rousing "Pay Me My Money Down" finale (and despite a persistent audience chanting for more). Nick Corr tells us: "Given it was meant to be a media showcase performance, I thought Bruce and the Band played a storming show, enahnced by the much smaller venue and closer environment... the entire crowd was well into the vibe, which the band seemed to pick up on and play off -- so despite the shorter set, it was the best of the three UK shows I witnessed. If the recording picked up even half the magic of the performance, it should be a fantastic radio and TV broadcast on the BBC!" BBC Radio 2's Sold on Song program will air on this Saturday, May 13, at 9 p.m., to be followed by the TV special on BBC 4 (May 19, 10 p.m.) and BBC 2 (May 20, 11:30 p.m).
Setlist: John Henry/O Mary Don't You Weep/How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?/How Can I Keep From Singing/Mrs. McGrath/Mrs. McGrath/My Oklahoma Home/Jacob's Ladder/O Mary Don't You Weep/We Shall Overcome/Pay Me My Money DownFor the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

Bruce em-Bosses Seeger
Springsteen salutes the great folk singer on PBS.
GREAT PERFORMANCES: 'BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – THE SEEGER SESSIONS LIVE.' Tonight at 9, PBS/Ch. 13.
For his first appearance on the PBS series "Great Performances," Bruce Springsteen tackles his set list with almost reckless passion, as if carried away by emotion while singing loudly in church.
And that's exactly where he is.
"Bruce Springsteen - The Seeger Sessions Live," premiering tonight at 9 on WNET-Ch. 13, was taped two months ago inside London's St. Luke's Church.
There's stained glass on the walls, a gaggle of faithful fans in rapt attendance and Springsteen and his apostles - more than a dozen musicians and backup singers (17, by my count) - are indeed there to spread the gospel.
The gospel, in this case, is made up of verses, if not chapters, of folk and protest songs popularized by veteran folk singer and songwriter Pete Seeger.
Springsteen sings lead on all eight songs covered in this hour, and wields an acoustic guitar as his instrument of choice. Seeger uses an acoustic guitar, too, and many decades ago wrote a message on his instrument: "This machine kills fascists."
Springsteen's passionate, often boisterous set begins with "John Henry." It opens the show forcefully, and builds to an even bigger crescendo just when you think it's over. That sets the tone, and the bar, for this entire show.
Other highlights include a raw reading of the Irish anti-war song "Mrs. McGrath" (with such riveting phrases as "A cannonball on the 5th of May / tore my two fine legs away"), and Springsteen-added lyrics, alluding to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, on "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?"
On my preview tape - it'll be interesting to see whether this survives the final cut and is transmitted by WNET and PBS - Springsteen dedicates those three verses to "our President bystander."
The backing band employs banjo, accordion, horns, piano and lots more, touching on moods and sounds that range from folk to Cajun. There's a looseness, and yet a musical tightness, that brings to mind Bob Dylan's "Basement Tapes" recordings with The Band.
The complete set also includes "O Mary Don't You Weep," "My Oklahoma Home" (for which the crowd knows just when to join in and echo the "blown away" chorus), "Jacob's Ladder" (with a humorously false start), "We Shall Overcome" and, as the final number, a rousing rendition of "Pay Me (My Money Down)."
Is that a piece of social consciousness - or a cue for a pledge break? At any rate, what you should definitely support is the Springsteen album "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions," which covers 14 songs with the same exuberance. For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

enjoy the show !
The Irish influence in some of these songs is plentiful. The guy that plays the Tuba also p[lays the fife / flute and really gets into it.
I know Bruce mentioned Mrs McGrath being of Irish lore, and also the song he had been opening with at the last 3 Leg 1 shows ( nobody even knows the details surrounding this song-- ie: who wrote it ? Is it a Bruce song ? ) American Land has a really Celtic sound to it .
Call me crazy : some of these songs remind me of the Clancy Brothers / Tommy Makhem Music that my grandmother used to listen to ,.
enjoy the shows- & let us know about it ! I'll be at one or both of the rehearsals before he heads over your way- we'll see how they go ,...

UN GRANDE RITORNO!
European dates keep coming in, including a third in Dublin
Quick sellouts in Dublin and Belfast this morning; as the Irish Independent reports: "A third date at the Point on November 19 was subsequently announced and tickets for that show were also sold out in a matter of minutes. Aiken Promotions says it took just 25 minutes for all 34,000 tickets to be sold."
Meanwhile the European schedule keeps filling in, with seven different Italian cities at the beginning of October, and five Spanish cities at the end of that month... plus Copenhagen and returns to Oslo and Stockholm. For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

Springsteen's son has kayak mishap
His dad may have been born to run, but Evan Springsteen was born to kayak.
Well, maybe not.
The 15-year-old son of rockers Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa had to be pulled from an Adirondack lake in Lake Placid, N.Y., by forest rangers after his kayak overturned.
The incident occurred July 2, when the family was in Lake Placid, where the couple's daughter Jessica was competing in the resort village's annual horse show.
Officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation said forest rangers on routine patrol spotted an overturned kayak some distance from shore. When they pulled up, they spotted a teen in the water.
The rangers got the boy into their boat and took him to the rented lakeside camp where his family was staying.
The teen Springsteen wasn't hurt in the incident, which occurred while he was on an outing with friends.
A department spokesman said the 56-year-old rocker thanked the rangers for rescuing his son.

ENGLAND'S DREAMING
Springsteen to play Birmingham, London, Sheffield
A press release from Shore Fire Media today fleshes out the fall European tour itinerary with three additional shows, all in England. Between November 7 Antwerp and November 17 Dublin, Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions Band will play NEC Arena in Birmingham on November 9, Wembley Arena in London on November 11, and the Hallem FM Arena in Sheffield on November 14.
As it stands now (with, strangely, no dates currently scheduled for France), the fall European leg consists of 26 shows, from October 1 through November 21.

YOU GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY
Bruce contributes to World Hunger Year benefit CD
Hard Rock International has teamed up with World Hunger Year, a favorite charity of Springsteen's, to put together a new benefit CD called SERVE. The 12-track disc of rarities, sold at Hard Rock Cafe locations and online at the Hard Rock website, kicks off with Springsteen's contribution, the String Version of "Secret Garden." (You might recall some hand-wringing over that one in the Blood Brothers documentary.) Though released on multiple CD singles in the mid-'90s, the track has since been rare and out of print. Also on SERVE are cuts from Aerosmith, Ray Lamontagne, and The Hold Steady. All artists on the album are either members or friends of Artists Against Hunger & Poverty, a program of World Hunger Year, and proceeds from SERVE will go to help their efforts to fight hunger.
This is the second team-up between Hard Rock and World Hunger Year. -- the Springsteen Signature Series Tee, also benefitting W.H.Y., is still available. For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

Out comes Bruce , all gray and in his trusty NY Yankees Cap . Big smiles, unrehearsed, borrowed guitar and the crowd goes absolutely insane. It was very brief, all of approx 2:30, in what is very likely the least timed Bruce appeareance / cameo ,....ever. This is no doubt a nod of respect and to keep the focus on the headliner, alltho there was PLENTY of " Bruuuuuuuceing" happening .
Bruce & Fogerty whipped thru " Long Tall Sally " .
excellent show by the way- even Willie Nelson was pretty entertaining . Fogertys voice resonates with clarity and strength- even after all these years .For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

For anyone who may be headed out to Holmdel for any shows this summer :
- my buddies had lawn seats and a huge fight broke out towards the end of the main set ..
Security was lax and took very very long to respond & gain control.
Pregnant Women , kids in strollers , and all of the other 10,000 people on the lawn were vulnerable & at risk,... it is extremely dark up there from what they said .

HAVIN' SOME FUN WITH FOGERTY
The John Fogerty/Willie Nelson show Saturday night at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel brought a third music legend to the stage for a quick guest spot. Fogerty told the crowd that he ran into a kid with a guitar backstage, figured he'd bring him out to play... and, "Oh yeah -- his name is Bruce." You can imagine the Jersey crowd liked the sound of that. Wearing a Yankees cap and armed with a shiny red and white telecaster, Bruce showed he still remembers how to play a mean electric guitar as the two VFC touring partners teamed up for "Long Tall Sally." Get a taste with a, um, "fan based recording" on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEqNXvxC8_8

NEW ALBUM / DVD

News updated August 8, 2006
THE BIONIC SEEGER SESSIONS: "ENHANCED" CD/DVD
"We can rebuild it. We can make it better than it was... Better. Stronger. Faster."
Yes, they have the technology... and on October 3, Columbia will release an expanded set with an expanded title: We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions - American Land Edition. The fall release takes its name from the new song that Springsteen unveiled for the last three shows of his recent U.S. tour, which is included here as one of several bonus tracks. According to a press release, "American Land" was written by Springsteen, "inspired by" a poem set to Pete Seeger's music called "He Lies in the American Land."
Rather than a DualDisc, the American Land edition will split the CD and DVD components onto two separate discs, with bonus material on each. What's new:
CD: Five additional tracks for the album itself. Two of them, "Buffalo Gals" and "How Can I Keep From Singing?," were audio bonus tracks on the DVD side of the original DualDisc. The remaining three are previously unreleased: "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live," "Bring 'Em Home," and "American Land."
DVD: The extended version of the behind-the-scenes film, a 40-minute cut that aired on CMT shortly after the original album release, with additional footage of "Jacob's Ladder" and "Erie Canal." Plus: Thom Zimny-directed music videos of "American Land" and "Pay Me My Money Down," and concert clips of "Poor Man" (L.A., 6/5/06) and "Bring 'Em Home" (Concord, CA, 6/6/06).
Packaging: An expanded booklet, featuring additional photos by Danny Clinch, lyrics to the new songs, and the in-depth liner notes by Dave Marsh that were previously online only at http://www.brucespringsteen.net.
It won't cost six million dollars. But if the idea of repurchasing an album so soon gets your hackles up, the press release states that the new edition "will be available on a track-by-track basis from iTunes, allowing fans that have already purchased We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions DualDisc to download the additional tracks."

Rare photos of Bruce Springsteen taken by Danny Clinch.
Additional lyrics and fascinating complete track notes by distinguished music scholar Dave Marsh (also available at http://www.brucespringsteen.net).
Springsteen wrote "American Land" and performed it in New York and New Jersey. The song was inspired by "He Lies in the American Land," a poem by a Slovakian immigrant steelworker that Pete Seeger later translated and set to music.
About "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times," Bruce Springsteen said, "This song was written by Blind Alfred Reed and recorded a month after the crash of '29 that heralded the Great Depression. I first heard it on Ry Cooder's self-titled debut album (1970). To his arrangement we owe a debt. I kept the 'doctor' first verse by Reed then wrote three others with a mind to the great trials the people of New Orleans have faced this year."
Penned by Pete Seeger during the Vietnam War, "Bring 'Em Home" quickly acquired anthemic power in the anti-war movement. Springsteen first recorded the song in January 2006 and added a final lead vocal during his European tour, at a studio in Oslo, Norway. His poignant rendition, performed frequently on the Seeger Sessions tour, adds several new verses and connects the song to a much earlier topical song, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." "Bring 'Em Home" was written in 1965 and originally released on Seeger's 1971 Columbia album, 'Young vs. Old.'
'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions - American Land Edition' will be available on a track-by-track basis from iTunes, allowing fans that have already purchased 'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' DualDisc to download the additional tracks. For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside
