For playing a 5-string, not for your misogynist comments.

  • In fact, I just started learning bass about a month ago. I've got an Ibanez starter pack (*watches everyone bust up laughing* hey, it was a good deal) and I'm in love with the sound the instrument puts out. I'm looking for a better amplifier though, any suggestions?

I had one of those back in the day... Ibanez starter pack... I still have the mini amp (it's right next to me in fact)... anyways, after some, umm, 'beautifications' to it using a hammer and a whole lot of sandpaper, it looks... shall we say, interesting...

Anyways, if you're going early go Peavey... it is the only way

    $700 max

I could use some help in the "sound" department.

    Pretty damn loud :)

Peavey's a good way to go...

I like Carvin's bass stuff, too, in that price range.

    I'd look for a good 200-500 watt head and a 4x10" cabinet.

I have a Peavey and I love it; I wish I were better at playing it though. It definately does not get the attention and love it deserves.

Those Boogie heads are the shiznit. Love 'em. The only thing better (arguably, anyways) is an SVT Ampeg.

That cab, though... not a big fan of horn-loaded cabs for any instrument. The sound is just... weird... great for big rooms, but not great for on stage. I'd rather have a 4x10" cab with a mic into the PA.

What's with all the anti-five string comments? It's only an extra string. It doesn't need to change the way you play or the way you sound. It's mearly adding another tool to use. I would certainly welcome an extra string so don't need de-tune/change positions within scales. I only have one bass just now but I am tempted to get a five to compliment my four...perhaps something really good...like a Music Man or such like. I say don't be close minded and have 4's and 5's...I don't really get 6+ string basses though! The neck width is getting a little extreme. 8 string basses with paired strings are cool...see Jeff! lol
