It does have similar features to a cult, but I suppose the question is, if Trump doesn't somehow try to get a third term, or ages out, can someone else wield the power of cult leader, or will the party fragment when he's gone?

I think it fragments while people vie for control.

The logical part of me thinks, he has a charm over some people and no one can really step into that void. So you’ll have some normal republicans coalesce around a candidate, while the MaGA fina a crazy. Vance has zero juice. Dude is DOA. Rubio has some political skills and is a bit more measured and “normal” republican. There’s probably any number of people who can do his thing though.

It’s the crazy wing is what scares the emotional part of me. Bars have been lowered and norms erased. This admin has proven what it can get away with. There are evil people out there with a lot more smarts than Trump who really do have super villain type aspirations. And while I do think the MAGA crazies are a minority in the whole of United States (and even less with Trump being out of the picture - I do think most hardcore are in for the cult of personality), so much vile behavior has been normalized (the bigotry, the othering, the embrace of ignorance) that I worry that that stuff will be a constant and vocal voice in government for the time being despite not having a wider reach. It’s going to be that nagging voice in politics that make some people think twice, sandbagging everything more reasonable admins, regardless of which side, preventing good or just improved policy.

I don’t think he will try for a third term. Why would he? He has now gotten everything he needs to be safe after a presidency. Immunity, no scrutiny from the IRS, billions of dollars, business opportunities. He do some pardons and then peace out to Truth social. He doesn’t even like the day to day job of being president. He just likes the attention and the accolades. He doesn’t give a shit about governance or the real work. He just likes making final decisions and choosing drapes.

The other thing to remember is, he is not popular and his agenda isn't popular. The moves hes making are to enrich and protect himself for when he isn't president. He's also 80 and clearly on the decline. There is no reason for him to stay in power. Also the mechanics of another presidential election are underway. You can even see players starting to jockey. The dude is the worst, but I'm not about to start hand wringing over him being an emperor for life.

No, I think the thing to watch for is the election fuckery in 2026 and 2028, particularly 2028.

I see one of two things happening, a republican candidate wins in 2028, perhaps by stealing the election in a myriad of ways, and becomes the heir apparent to the CCOOTWH cult of grift and graft, owing their success to CCOOTWH and his fuck the law, democracy and everyone else cult. CCOOTWH’s family, including The Dim One and Lurch, along with all of the rest of that godforsaken family, become capos for The Don, godfather of all things grifting and grafting. Through more court appointments, redistricting, and purges of non-loyalists and defectors, the Cult remains in power. We get more of what we’re seeing now, further backed by the trillionaires and billionaires, who know which side their bread is buttered on. In a nutshell in broad terms.

Or, the dems legitimately win the 2028 elections despite the election fuckery and CCOOTWH, or his successor, and his cult declare it stolen and CCOOTWH, or his successor, having lost faith in the republican candidate, declares martial law and refuses to leave the WH or POTUS until the election results are fully investigated, recounted, litigated. Meanwhile, the goon squad, ahem the brown shirts, of 1/6’ers and current/former ICE/ATF agents, Proud Boys, 3%’ers, RoganBros, Quirk Squirts, Elongitaint Taints, and all the other aggrieved, white supremicist, women hater-child beater evangelicals descend on DC as heavily armed occupiers to protect what is “their god given right”. All of which is blessed with a wink and a nod by the Heritage Foundation, faux news, the Murdicks, Project 2025, all the toxic masculinity, UFC, WWF, Palantir, Elongitaint, et. Al.

Shits going to be ugly and if you thought the troops in the streets, ICE detentions and warehouse detention centres were all about and for illegal immigrants, you haven’t been paying attention. Also, look who’s in charge now and the feckless repubs. There ain’t no putting pandora back in the box or the genie in the bottle.

But he sure do like him some AF1, Marine1, and a standing 2,000,000 person military with all the bells and whistles, not to mention a big red button. You just know CCOOTWH is itching to pull the trigger for a mushroom cloud. Maybe a small one. Maybe a big one. We’ll know soon. Probably in about two weeks.
