Well this is often not the case. Plenty of crimes, including mass shootings and lot of murders, especially domestic violence ones, are carried out by people using guns that they legally purchased, or that their parents legally purchased.

i would imagine terrorism, in the sense of something like 9/11 has external funding or is state sponsored and i can see how they would separate that from regular mass shooting incidents that we see basically daily here in the us.

This has come up several times before, and I've always provided the same answer. And it seems to upset a lot of people. Mass shootings are't a white problem, and those stats even prove it.
Also, excluding gang violence seems like intentionally skewing the data even more. There is no officially recognized definition of what is a mass shooting, so it allows source the to create their own. I've never heard of anyone excluding gang violence. If you're going to exclude a predominantly black group from the data, it appears the only reason would be to skew the data.
Also, the Pulse Night club and San Bernardino shootings (as well as some others) were officially recognized as terrorist attacks by the FBI, the Vegas shooting was not. So excluding some of those and not others gives the impression of skewing the data to me. Per their definition that you quoted, the Vegas shooting counts and Pulse Night club does not. Why count one and not the other towards the data if you're trying to be open and honest about which race commits more mass shootings? I mean, if you're going to exclude gangs, terrorism, and other groups that are mostly minorities, may as well just say whites commit 100% of the violence perpetuated by non-minorities.
