The Institute of Museum and Library Services is now accepting applications for its 2026 grant cycle. But this time, it has unusually specific criteria: It “particularly welcomes” projects that align with President Donald Trump’s vision for America.

Trump Orders the Pentagon to Buy More Coal-Fired Electricity

Mr. Trump is trying to revive coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel. At the White House, coal executives awarded him a trophy as the “Undisputed Champion of Beautiful Clean Coal.”

President Trump on Wednesday directed the Pentagon to start buying more electricity from coal-burning power plants as part of his efforts to revive the declining coal industry.

Mr. Trump signed an executive order directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to enter into long-term contracts with coal plants across the country to power military installations. The move could provide financial support to dozens of coal plants that might have otherwise been set to retire in the coming years.

“We’re going to be buying a lot of coal through the military now,” Mr. Trump said at a White House event on coal. “We’re lifting up our hard working American miners like nobody has ever done before.”

At the event, more than a dozen coal executives and miners in hard hats presented Mr. Trump with a trophy that said “Undisputed Champion of Beautiful Clean Coal.” The award came from the Washington Coal Club, an obscure group with financial ties to the coal mining industry.

Mr. Trump also announced that the Energy Department was awarding $175 million to upgrade six coal plants in Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia.

At the same time, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation’s largest federally owned electric utility, said this week it would postpone the retirement of its two largest coal plants, which had been set to close in 2027 and 2028.

The moves are part of an ongoing effort by the Trump administration to increase America’s use of coal. Mr. Trump likes to refer to the fuel as “clean, beautiful coal” to goad environmentalists who point out that coal is the most polluting of all fossil fuels and the single biggest driver of global warming.

It also marks a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the coal industry, which had been declining sharply in recent years. Since 2005, electric utilities have retired hundreds of older coal plants in favor of cleaner and cheaper natural gas, wind and solar power.

Give him a medal and he’d probably order the navy to fuel all its ships and submarines to burn coal and make Amtrak to return to coal fired steam locomotives. Brilliant brilliance in all its brilliancy. 4D chess, yo!

I may have missed a bigger story on this but did trump make some sort of promise that those pardoned would be receiving restitution?

The person Trump has chosen to lead the National Park Service is Scott Socha, a senior executive with the private hospitality and concessions company Delaware North, which runs hotels, restaurants, and retail operations in a number of national parks across the country. Socha has spent more than two decades in the hospitality business and currently serves as president of parks and resorts at Delaware North, a firm that brings in billions of dollars annually from services tied to parks like Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Shenandoah. His nomination now heads to the Senate for confirmation.

This pick signals a shift toward a profit-centered mindset in an agency whose mission is about conservation, protection, and stewardship. The National Park Service was established to preserve natural landscapes, wildlife habitat, and cultural heritage for all Americans, not to maximize revenue or expand concession business operations. Socha, by contrast, has spent his career managing businesses that operate inside parks and generating income from visitors a very different set of priorities than protecting ecosystems, safeguarding historical interpretation, and ensuring scientific stewardship of public lands.

What makes the choice even more controversial is Delaware North’s past history with the Park Service itself. During a multi-year contract dispute over the Yosemite concession, the company asserted ownership of trademarks on historic names tied to the park (including names of iconic lodges and even parts of the park’s identity) and sought tens of millions of dollars for them before settling for far less. Parks belong to the public and should not be treated as intellectual property for corporate negotiation, that episode highlighted a fundamental clash of values.

Putting a longtime concessions executive in charge of the very agency that oversees and regulates park concessions naturally raises concerns about where priorities will land. Our national parks are public treasures, not business assets, and their leadership sets the tone for whether preservation or commercialization comes first. Given this background and relationship to a major park concessionaire, this appointment is a major conflict of interest!

Holy shit...check out that story where Noem fired a Coast Guard pilot. Their plane had to land due to a mechanical issue so they switched planes. Apparently Noem's blankie didn't make it on the new plane so she fired the pilot when they landed. They then discovered they didn't have anyone else to fly them back so she rehired him.

    So fucked up...
